I use either a Pyrex glass measuring cup or a ceramic coffee cup. The reason why is that the oil is easier to handle and cooks the same IMO. The temps seem to be in the same range +/- using either one inside a ceramic crockpot. Just be sure to buy and use an oven thermometer and set it in the pot as shown in my Cannabutter thread. Post 6 shows it pretty well.

First off thank you MVP for taking the time to put this together much appreciated :)
This will be the first time I've ever attempted baking but I'm wondering if I use hashish instead of bud would there be a difference in how much I should use?

DropTB,
My personal rule of thumb is that 1 gram hash = approx 1.5 grams of good herb.
I've had much success baking with that measurement. :stoned::stoned::stoned:
Good luck and post back your results.

Brownies for Beginners ... done right in a couple of hours
I haven't looked through the entire thread yet, but I have a few questions.
1) Would it be okay to use 1/8 ounce of marijuana? I would expect that you would just have to eat twice as much to experience the same high.
2) After cooking the brownies, how long can they be stored in the fridge? Can they be vacuum sealed?
3) How can I convince my friend that mainly smokes from a blunt (I have to beg him to hit off any type of bong/bowl with me) to match for brownies?
Thank you and I look forward to your reply.

Yes, use 1/8 and consume twice as much will work the same for most people.

Short term (1-2 weeks) they will last in the fridge. Longer than that I vacuum seal them and throw them in the freezer.

I can tell you that the effects are longer lasting and eating herb is more healthy than smoking...

Dude, someone needs another bongload or two.....or a math class... an 8 inch by 8 inch pan makes 16 brownies when you cut it correctly. Three horiztonal cuts and three vertical cuts result in 16 pieces that should do you just fine with mids or anything above that...
In other words cut the cake in half horizontally and vertically , then cut it again to equal 16 squares... get it? Not trying to be a dick, I hope you understand. Enjoy!!

Hi all,
I am going to try to make these tonight. Hopefully they will turn out good.
SO I intend to follow the directions with making the oil first, I have atleast 1 cup of finely ground mids ( hey you take what you can get ) so that should do me just fine.
Making my own topping with really bitter chocolate, coconut and finely ground pecans almost like a German Chocolate Cake but not quite.
If I am questioning if I did the oil correctly I will just bake the green into the brownie, though I did buy cheese cloth at the grocer last night. So when I am done being lazy I will make brownies.

HA I was wrong it only turned out to be 1/4 cup of nicely chopped herb. My roomie comes down and was wondering what I was making, he said nothing of the smell and yeah it smelled. THough I smoke out all the time and in common areas of the house and he never says anything.
The oil came out to be a dark olive green color, and the bud was a very dark brown color. I kept it to a bare boil, ( where it is barely boiling, nearly a simmer but not quite.) for 22 minutes. I don't know if I overcooked the oil or not but I thought the oil smelled of herb. It is so tricky to get a proper temp on our stove since it is as and rather old at that.
At any rate they are in the oven baking for 40 minutes, then I have to apply the topping mixture I created. Can't wait my back is killing me tonight.

Here's a hash brownie recipe that my friend gave me:
1. Get ingrediants together.
2. Melt butter in small pan on LOW heat.
3. Grind up hash or get in smaller particials.
4. Put "brown sugar hash" in the butter and stir until hash disolves fully in butter.
5. Add butter to pre-mix brownie (make sure to combine egg, water, and pre-mix BEFORE you melt hash in butter).
6. Mix and put in oven as directed on brownie mix box and bake.
I made them last night and they were pretty good. I think I messed up on the recipe because I added more butter then needed, but I believe I fixed it by adding more brownie mix to absorb the extra butter. I made the brownie pieces into small amounts because I didn't know how strong they would be. After having 2-3 brownies within a 2-3 hour time period, it was a nice high (but not a "totally fucked up" kind of high). I'm having my buddy come over tonight to test the brownies.

I made these last night & OH.MY.GOD. :stoned:
The high from consuming weed instead of smoking is so crazily different for me. It's almost a warm feeling, like being tipsy from wine. It was really a outta body experience if you will, haha.
It was awesome. Definitely will be doing this more often. My dad loved them too. haha.
My bestfriend hates smoking the stuff, so I thought she would enjoy these but now she is wondering how long the THC will stay in your system as opposed to smoking?
She's looking to get a job soon so she's worried about passing a drug test after eating one.
(Which the drug test could even be like a month away, she doesn't ever believe what I say, lol, so could someone else tell her the deal?)

Brownies for Beginners ... done right in a couple of hours
Oh man I did this just like the directions said, except I didn't let the oil cool first (doh). I cut brownies into equal squares that netted 16 total. Anyway, I was going on a flight from Tampa, FL to Los Angeles, CA and I took the brownies with me. After the checkpoint, I sat down at the gate and ate 4 brownies with a bottle of milk I bought. Called for boarding and I didn't feel anything when we got to our layover in Atlanta, GA. So I ate another 4 brownies (no milk this time) when we got on the plane that took us to LA. I laid back and took a nap. I woke up with restless leg like a bitch. I couldn't sit still. Now it's probably been 3.5 hours since I ate the first 4. I was super duper high. The affects were even greater since we were at 30K+ feet. I was all smiley and just plain happy. I started in and out of sleeping, but my legs were so *ucking annoying and kept waking me up. Then I startes sweating really bad and my lady said I turned a grey color. I was thinking about how they were going to have to do an emergency landing to get me to a medical facility, blah blah blah. My lady almost called a flight attendant because I looked so bad (glad she didn't). Then after about 3-5 minutes of a pure hell feeling, the symptoms went away (minus the crazy legs).
Before the flight home, fearing a repeat of the super sweats and just like I'm going to shit myself or throw up. I decided to eat them on the ground. I ate 4 brownies before going out to a restaurant (minor affects) and another four back at the hotel before we watched a movie.
I used my normal bud, nothing expensive. I wouldn't recommend doing it before you get on a plane or go scuba diving though. It's just too expensive. I'll stick with vaporizing with the Volcano.

Brownies for Beginners ... done right in a couple of hours
First post ever on the site, making brownies this weekend, stumbled across this and just wanna say thanks to MVP for making what seems to be a easy to follow, well detailed guide. I am kinda an anxious person (weed helps alleviate) and don't wanna waste $100 worth of mj and not get high.
If anyone is still paying attention to this, I just wanna make sure that I can cook the brownies at the temp the box requires, even if its above 215 or 300. My concern is I will do the oil correctly, then f them up in the oven.
Oh and I think I have a pan thermometer, so i can judge the heat, Ill be aiming for 200, but basically as you wrote, a low simmer where no bubbles or boiling. I will stir it regularly for up to an hour.
I'm using 1/4 oz of headiesm prob grinding with my usual grinder, but will aim to make it as powerdery as possible. should be around 0.4g per brownie or so, but I might make it 8 grams total to even it at 0.5g per. Any other help/suggestions please message or post here. I'm still pretty nervous on the smell, since i live in an apt building, but I'm just gonna use a fan and try and mask it.
Sorry for the long post, first one though.

Brownies for Beginners ... done right in a couple of hours
I stumbled upon this thread in google, looking for pictures of brownies. Not even magic brownies, I just felt like looking at some brownies. Anyway, I started craving all of you guys's experiments and wanted to make my own. I had two obstacles: No stove and no oven. Actually nothing much except a microwave. So I decided to go ahead anyway, hit the minimarket and buy a chocolate chip muffin mix, some oil and a couple of eggs.
I came home and poured some oil in a plate, then cut some of my finest hydro-tech into little pieces and sprinkled. I then heated it ithe microwave for two minutes, got it out, mashed and stirred it and repeated the procedure several times. Finally the oil turned greenish and the remaining buds were brownish. I then let it cool for about 40 min, then added half the mix, some water and one egg into it. I placed it in a tupperware and gave it 5 min in the microwave.
Very much to my surprise, after those five minutes the flour had a great consistency and then I heated it a couple more minutes to melt the choco chips, which worked. Now I have a mammoth muffin from which I already ate half, it is extremely good, it's been about 40 minutes since I ate it and still nothing special but I'll be getting back to you on it.
So anyway I was surprised you can make such a decent muffin in a microwave instead of an oven, I'll try the brownie mix soon, and let's hope there actually is some THC in my mega muffin, I believe it would be hard for there not to be, it smelled really strong and the oil changed color, so...n

I might be trying to do this over the weekend. If I do, I will post results. :rastasmoke:

Brownies for Beginners ... done right in a couple of hours
So the result was a really good muffin and a very mediocre high, I assumed this was weather because of the amount of weed or because the heating went wrong.
I tried it again today with the remaining half of the mix. This time I added more weed and only heated the oil once (5 min). The oil came out much greenier, smellier and the buds were dark brown/black. I proceeded to finish the muffin, ate about 20 % of it, it's been about 4 hours and I'm still high, this time really, really high.
So for those of you who happen to have nothing but a microwave, this is my chronicle of a successful experiment.

I don't think its necessary to completely grind up all the plant matter into a fine powder and adding it to the oil. When I do it , I just use a normal hand grinder or use my fingers and break up all the plant matter into small pieces. Then I add to oil , cook for 15 minutes MEDIUM heat. You can see when the oil is ready as it turns from a clear amber to a dark brown . Also , you only need to add about an eighth (3.5 grams) for an entire batch of brownies. (as long as it is good smoke not schwag) . From there I pour the entire pan into a fine metal strainer over the sink into a measuring cup. Then I use a spoon to press the plant matter in the strain to get all the oil out and then just add to the recipe. I prefer this method other than actually eating the plant matter . I have made about 20 or batches this way and it is extremely effective. One time I made a batch and gave one to a friend and he said it made him cry and he had an epiphany about life. Extremely strong and lasts up to 8 hours. I can recall many times I woke up the next day and i was still stoned big time ! I cook up all mine till where all the plant matter is black and there is a slight smoke rising from the pan. I believe this higher heat setting may stimulate more extraction from the plant although I would not recommend it for an extended period. Also , be prepared that cooking this will stink up your house ! Have some windows open and plenty of good ventilation. Also , it is true that you want to wait about an hour and a half before deciding to "eat another one" cause you don't feel anything. People have different metabolisms and absorption rates so be patient. One time my girl friend decided to eat 4 in row because she didn't feel anything... and after that she got sick and threw up because she said the room was spinning and she was hearing voices. You don't want to ruin a good experience by over doing it. In addition, I mean no dis respect to the original poster as I think his guide is clear , concise, and well put. I only disagree with grinding to a powder and eating it as well as not letting it cook till its black as I have had fantastic results this way.

Awesome recipe, worked to perfection. I like using a glass 8"x8" because at 325 it gives the end product a hard outer shell but moist middle.
Side note, I used 1/4 of okay product, but if you're a regular smoker you may need to ante up the oil's potency to really get a kick out of a single brownie.

Brownies for Beginners ... done right in a couple of hours
k, gotta drop a quick note just to share my experience. Never cooked before so it was my first attempt and I'm cheap so i was worried about wasting a 1/4 by screwing it up somehow.
I got some brand of peanut butter cup brownies and i had peanut oil. Directions called for 1/4 oil or 1/3 (for cake like brownies). I used 1/3 oil but left the egg/water mixture like it said for normal brownies (thinking a little more oil might help with the thc extraction). I have a gas range and was worried about it getting too hot. I had decent bud and did an okay job removing stems/seeds, but not perfect. Grounded it twice on the "fine" setting of my coffee grinder and used a shaving clipper brush to make sure I got all of the powder out.
I put the powder into the oil pretty soon after the oil started to get warm and dropped it down to the lowest setting on my gas range. Because I was cooking it at a lower temperature than suggested I cooked it for a full hour. A few times I tried to raise the temp but mostly left it on lowest. I stirred occasionally and mostly stirred by shaking the stainless steel saute pan. I could see the heating oil gently moving the particles around, but I wouldn't call it a simmer. I was careful not to get it so hot I could see the oil smoking.
I let it cool for about 15 minutes and then did the brownies as per instructions in a blue glass 8x8 baking dish. Then I proceeded to lick the hell out of the batter that was left over in the mixing bowl (wondering what effect it might have). I let the brownies cool for a long time and then tried to dump them upside down to cut, but they kind of fell apart. That was likely my bad from using the extra oil and not cooking long enough.
Regardless, I got very high from the batter and little bits I ate as I was packaging them up. I did some research on storing and settled on putting them all (unshapely as they were) in a freezer ziploc, sucking all the air out with a drinking straw, wrapped in foil and stuck in the freezer. The general consensus I gathered about storing seemed to be they would freeze well up to 6 months with little to no effect on potency, just taste/texture of the brownies.
Needless to say, I am thrilled. Based on the batter cleanup I have to say they are very potent. I love not having to smoke as I worry about the ol' lungs. It did take a couple hours before I realized I was super-stoned. Thanks for the easy to follow recipe and making it idiot-proof. Whhoooooohaaaaaa.
I'm going to try a whole brownie tonight, can't wait...
