man if i want something ill buy it.
i aint diggin through nappy trash.
have you smelled trash water? jeeeez.
yes, i do give away the majority of food and dry goods I find, mostly to Food Not Bombs, thought they usually only take food that has been directly given by a company, or to freecycle or to local trading networks.Quote:

take a book for example, first you need an author who toils for months and years to write a novel, get it edited by an editor who makes a living from this, find a publishing company that hires people to publish books. the paper in that book comes from companies that hire people to cut down trees, take them to a plant where other people work to create paper. these people earn a living from cutting down trees and creating paper. someone is hired to ship that paper, from a company that works hard to transport and maintain it, more people making a living. then somoene takes that paper and prints it and binds it in a book, more people making a living. then that book is transported by more people to more retailers. those retailers work hard to sell you that book, make a living. then somehow that book which took thousands of men and women, thousands of dollars, thousands of man hours, ends up in the trash. paper, people, money, labor, trees, the hopes and dreams of the people working to create a seemingly disposable book are lost. reclaiming that book takes back everything that these people worked for.( now the rub is the money that is lost in the process of reclaiming the book, it was free for me. that's one of the flaws of merchantile capitalism, but thats another thread (inject controversy here).) anyway, would you rather see that book in a landfil, not serving the purpose it was so tediously created for, or would you rather see me, a dumpster diver, making use of all the man hours that went into that book???? the same goes for food. WASTE!!!! we live in a capitalistic, disposeable society. i'm tired of it and I am making my contribution, though small, to fight waste.
thanks those of you who see the logic behind this. it's not so much about being poor. i am certainly not. i come from a white, surburban middle class family that always provided me with the things I needed. I do it because it's all circular. I give away about 70% of what I dive, the rest i consume, cause thats what these things were meant for.
diving is fun, too. after most dives, my friends and I usally hit the bong or boxed wine. its a great way to bond and build humility, to experience the end of the consumer spectrum, which is so very often hidden. guys, trash isn't so scary. if you can;t get out of your comfort zone in your plush little worlds of security and apathy, I am glad I can. trash is inevitable, but we can do something to resuse and reduce it and help people and the world in the long run.
it's not for everyone, you aren't abligated to do anything about these problems I see everyday. I am a hardcore activist, if you havent noticed. someone has to do it. and I am willing and ready to fight and work towards a goal. if it grosses you out, thats your problem. until we can stop our bad habits of over consumption and depletion of resources, I will keep diving. it makes me feel good, its a lot of fun, and it is indeed helping a broad specturm of people.
if you dont agree, stay home and keep wasting. i'll be there to clean up after you slobs.
I never contradicted myself once. Not one single time. I have a position (which i defended 100%) on the issue and I am entitled to that. You just assume too much. You assume that because I don't eat food out of the garbage that I hate homeless people. No. I just don't like lazy people and don't understand the logic of digging out of a public trash dumpster when everyone who can climb in a dumpster is perfectly capable of feeding themselves. Its not a love/hate thing. Like i said before. Its more a public health issue than anything else. I hope noone feeds me some mashed potatoes and says later...."oh i picked it out of the trash".
Yes we as a people waste *alot* of food. We use alot of things that we don't need. I wholeheartedly agree. I really dislike the amount of napkins that places give you. I don't eat like a pig....so why should i require 5 napkins? I've even been to places that will put the napkins in a little paper pouch. Thats just stupid and a waste.
But, alas growing up.....I learned you eat what is on your plate because there are people starving in africa. And my fatass doesn't waste food. Guarantee you that.
Im glad billion can appreciate the lunacy of digging food (of all things) out of a dumpster. Personally its a pretty straightforward call. Its not about politics or who hates who or who is spoiled or......Im just calling it like I see it.
Like i said, if you can climb in a dumpster, you are physically perfectly capable of hunting/gathering.
Now if you find a bald 35" swamper in a dumpster....hold my beer because its getting tossed in the back of the truck.
Btw, a fresh head of lettuce looks exactly like a head of lettuce that is ridden with e-coli.
Maybe yall live in different areas, but if you've ever smelled a dumpster festering in the texas heat.....you wouldn't eat anything out of it either.
And crispi......rep? Who gives a fuck about rep? I barely even know what that is much less know how to turn it on. I'll take a look at it see if i can change it so you can leave me a dirty message.....as if I gave a damn.
This site is great, but people get crucified for not thinking a certain way.....perspective is everything i suppose.
Hey BF I don't think anyone questioned your compassion so don't take to much offence...
It is hard for youth to understand this and I applaud you Bizz for your common sense and effort... This kind of logic is more understood by older,,,I call "Old school train of thought" were you raised chickens and at times only had corn meal and made dinner with it... it pains me to throw perfectly good food in the trash when I know peeps would be blessed to have it... I feed what I can to the animals,,,it not good to give them bread and stuff but if I got a pork chop going to hell at least the crows will eat...
I see all this stuff as waist of perfectly good food... Heck,,, I bought Green peppers that were on their way out and made some delicious Chicken cacciatore last night... I paid a low price and the next step for those peppers was the dumpster...
I think peeps are confusing what Bizz is doing with a image of a derelict in the streets of a major city... Although as small and insignificant to the scheme of things this may seem it is the principle and that counts more than peeps will ever think or maybe know...
I'm done now...
I never dissed anyone personally in this thread except for ole homey (who can be sure he even exists?) isn't even here and who can care less. Hell, he would probably agree with me. I wasn't even talking directly to bizzle. She can dig things out of the trash and feed it to the general public if she wants. I just know that I won't be one of the 10 people dead from e-coli. All I can say is be careful and good luck. I never personally attacked you crispi, but you called me out for my perfectly legit argument. But I don't hold grudges so i don't find it to be a big deal eitherway. I'm not trying to change your position or recruit you for my anti-dumpster club.
You pressed for my opinion. I gave it. No hard feelins.
listen guys, i'm just like any of you.
i take showers every day. i make love to my significant other, i brush my teeth twice a day, i go to college and get good grades, i wash my clothes, i smoke pot every damn day, i shave my legs avery day and i like to dance. i go bowling on the weekends and i paint my nails. i ride my bike with friends and i take various psychadelics from time to time
i'm also a pretty crazy activist. yeah, i'm crazy in that respect....i take pride in it.i got to a different club meeting every day of the work week, United Greens, Environmental Students Association, Students for a Democratic Society, Youth for Socialist Action, Saling club. i go dumpster diving weekly, i go to protests, i banner drop, i stand on the corner of camden ave and college ave protesting for peace every damn sunday, i write to my representatives and i lobby, i speak my opinions loudly and i imagine a better society. i recycle and compost everything, i eat and buy organic, i am a vegetarian. i donate money to countless organizations, i volunteer my translating skills at free medical clinics.....i do a lot, let me brag for a moment. in doing all this, i am improving society in a small way.
and i don't hunt animals. that's cruel. humans can live without meat with modern advances in food. if you eat meat, that's okay....its your choice. if you hunt and can provide for yourself your own means of food, thats great...keep at it but dont go eating meat from farmed animals, thats counterproductive.
you may not agree with me. you may think i am a dirty hippy. but that doesnt matter. what matters is that my filthy dumpster diving escapades are indeed helping YOU, yes YOU and the rest of this disappointing society. you dont need to go dumpster diving. but just using less napkins and giving that homeless dude your spare change is not enough, its NOT ENOUGH! being responsible means doing more. i've dedicated a good part of my life to making up for the lack of irresponsible humans out there by going to the extremes to improve society. you can't just sit around and bitch, DO SOMETHING! (i'm only 19, surprise).
anyway, i find a lot of you disappointing. i'll die knowing that i've contributed significantly to society. the rest of u standing idly by....have fun being useless.
No hard feelings in the least bro. Skink was able to communicate some of the points i couldn't in a nice way . My whole prob. came about because of you kikn ppl. when their down . You were even man enuf to correct / rectify your comment . Laughing at Homey was wrong .Quote:

I've never done this, but where I live there's an underground car park.. I was going out one day, on my way to take my PC to my bro's to see if he could fix it, and I saw a brand new moniter and a fairly new PC that someone had left there, obviously to get collected by the trashmen.. Well, I'm using it now until I figure out how to fix my other one :)
Wow I haven't stopped by this thread for like a week... geez...
If I may...
Dumpster diving might not be everyones cup of tea but having an environmental conscience is something we can all respect, I hope...
It's definitely in our best interests as a species to be aware of the waste that our society produces- it's not a sustainable way of life, and people who make some attempt to decrease the amount of that waste in even a small way don't deserve mockery, they deserve a second look where we can then say, yeah, that DOES make sense....
BTW I really respect the food not bombs crew, and similar groups that try and make best use of what the rest of us don't want.
I mean, yeah, it would be awfully nice if the homeless got a bit more dignity than being fed what would be considered trash... but... it's a great start. Especially since the phenomenon of homelessness is really strongly tied to a society that has thrown aside its agrarian roots, as you can see in the argument that ValkyrieAG was involved with- where it IS possible for some people to procure their own food traditionally- but the urban poor simply don't have that choice.
Anyway Ima go hug a tree now.
the thread has been ressurected! hahaha!
TONIGHT I'M GOING DIVING AGAIN! wish me luck, its gonne be in the low thirties tonight. we will probably be especially lucky at Borders, they had a clearance sale last week. can you believe they throw out BOOKS?!
recycling at its finest, lolQuote:

can't hug any trees in my yard; they all have poison ivy vines in them. it's good though, the neighbors would think i was a dirrrty hippie if they saw that.Quote:

SO last week we went diving again, but had to cut it short as I had a social gathering involving Jager and maryjane to attend to. we gathered a bunch of office chairs and some clothes from goodwill thrift store. as we were finishing up, someone rolled by in car, claimed he was from the store and yelled at us 'go home, this isnt a free-for-all'. HAHA, you sir are mistaken. Dumpster diving is in its very defininationa free-for-all.
anyway, we have decided to store all of our findings for an end-of-the-semester Free Store on campus brought to you by the Students for a Democratic Society. It should be successful.
If it is in the name of anti-capitalism my friend, I support ya
Don't buy into the way of life here just because everyone else has, come with me as I look for a safe-to-live-in country with sunny skies and a harmonious balance between poverty and ignorant bliss
^^^viva la revolucion.
ValkyrieAg, if you're hatin on New Haven, then I'm glad you live elsewhere. Its a great place to live.
NightLife, I also go dumpster diving after Yale people leave! Where do you live in New Haven?
I love this thread...
I love Bizzle. Fuck the naysayers, cause it don't mean a thing.
Thank you 311.
I love this thread because it started a discussion about waste, parental neglect, and pulling oneself up by one's own bootstraps.
Throwing out books is the height of lunacy. Bad for Western Civilization, good for me.Quote:

OP, do you climb by any chance? i noticed the headlamp. in the "dirtbag" (excuse the expression) climbing community, dumpster diving is an art
but why do you have to LABEL yourself? give yourself a name like "freegan". can't you just be you, and you do what you do? i feel it's an epidemic these days in America that people, mostly young people, have a compelling need to label themselves, but themselves in a box, and belong to a group. it just rubs me the wrong way; and that's my two penniesQuote:
