I have never tried Salvia, but from what I understand it's completely safe in the sense that it has little to no toxicity to the human body. Plus, it's a plant. If you're concerned about any health issues though, you should take a look at http://www.erowid.org/plants/salvia/salvia.shtmlQuote:

First off, I did forget to mention that there may be some unpleasant physical sensations as you are coming down. From the time you smoke salvia, these can last up to a half hour. Beleive me, they will go away very soon. I've never known anybody to continue to feel anything after half an hour, though some people do report a change in mood or a strange feeling of anxiety up to an hour afterwards. The physical feelings are that your skin is very itchy and you may feel uncomfortably warm, though if somebody were to touch you they'd probably feel a cold sweat. Also, as with some harsher strains of weed, you may have an unpleasant burning sensation in your throat/lungs for a while afterwards. It's a good idea to have a nice COLD glass of ice water handy to give somebody as they come down to alleviate these side effects. However, make sure that they are ok enough to hold the glass, sometimes people may be talking coherently but not have their motor skills back completely.
As to the question about what kind of pipe to use, I still wholeheartedly back using a bong, preferably with ice water in it. There are two reasons for using a bong. Salvia tends to be harsher than weed, so the bong helps to cool the smoke. Also, to get the best effects from salvia, you want to smoke the largest volume in the smallest amount of time, and bongs help to do this. If you use a regular pipe, the smoke will be harsh and you will be taking small hits. Instead of having an intense, mind-blowing trip, you may end up with JUST the side effects listed above.
Another note about where to use salvia. I would recommend using it in a room in your home where you are comfortable and when you are around people that you are comfortable with. Find the most comfortable place to sit and have a competent sit-tripper with you. You don't want any interruptions such as phones or peole leaving and entering the room. This can be very confusing and distressing to a person who is tripping. Because of the quiet and controlled environment that is needed to ensure a safe trip, it is a bad idea to try salvia in an outside environment, where the risk of people approaching a tripper or other movement could easily frighten the person on salvia.
As for comparisons to other hallucinogens, I can't personally attest to this as I haven't tried them. However, I've talked to several people who have, and they said that salvia can be much more intense than mushrooms and acid. From what I know of these drugs, I would agree because while you are tripping on salvia you are completely non-functional. You couldn't communicate if you tried. Believe me, I've tried.
I'll tell you what I know about the legality of salvia and it's detectability in a drug test. As far as I know, there are no laws prohibiting the usage and posession of salvia. It is extremely uncommon for a drug test to check for salvia. The one exception I know of is the U.S. Military, which has its own laws against salvia use. I don't know anything about how long salvia stays in your system. I have heard one story from my hometown of Sioux Falls, SD in which a friend of mine, who is a minor, had a vile of salvia confiscated from him by the police.
There have been a few requests to sticky this post. How do I request that to be done? Also, could this post be edited into the original somehow?
U.S. STATE LAW #
Delaware #
Bill outlawing Salvia divinorum signed on May 02 2006 adds it to schedule I of the Delaware state controlled substances law. Bill Banning Salvia divinorum, now passed (May 8 2006). (Thanks to Logan)
Louisiana #
Effective Aug 8, 2005 (signed into law Jun 28, 2005) Louisiana Act No 159 makes 40 plants illegal, including S. divinorum, when intended for human consumption. The law specifically excludes the "possession, planting, cultivation, growing, or harvesting" of these plants if used "strictly for aesthetic, landscaping, or decorative purposes." (Text of HLS_05RS-52 and Update June 2005)
Missouri #
On Aug 28, 2005 House Bill 633 was incorporated into 195.017 of Missouri's drug regulation statutes. Thus, Salvia and salvinorin A became Schedule I substances in that state. As far as Erowid knows, Missouri is the first state in the U.S. to actually schedule s. divinorum or its active chemical. http://www.moga.state.mo.us/statutes...rs/chap195.htm. (Thanks Q)
St. Peters city passed an ordinance banning sales of Salvia divinorum to minors aged 17 or younger. Jan 2003. (St Peters Journal - Jan 26, 2003)
HB165 introduced in state legislature, proposing addition of S.divinorum to list of scheduled substances. No hearing scheduled as of Jan 2005. (MO House of Representatives)
New Jersey #
New Jersey lawmakers are reportedly considering a ban of Salvia divinorum: courier post online, may 18 2006. No law concerning Salvia d. known, but a mention in news about Northern Monmouth includes the following curious text: app.com GRAND TOUR: Two 15-year-old borough males were charged on Sept. 10 with illegal possession of salvia divinorum with intent to distribute by Sgt. Kevin Roake. (Thanks embroglio)

New York is moving to control Salvia divinorum. State Targets Tripped Out Herb - Long Island Press, June 16 2005. Also see the text of the proposed law taken from the very, very awful web site at: http://public.leginfo.state.ny.us/ . (Thanks Embroglio)
Tennessee #
Tennessee has made it a class A misdemeanor to "knowingly produce, manufacture, distribute, possess or possess with intent to produce, manufacture, or distribute the active chemical ingredient in the hallucinogenic plant Salvia divinorum A." Along with the strangely-worded caveat that this prohibition does not apply to "the possession, planting, cultivation, growing, or harvesting of such hallucinogenic plant strictly for aesthetic, landscaping, or decorative purposes." See http://www.legislature.state.tn.us/b...lnumber=SB3247. The law takes effect on July 1, 2006. See also: Ban on hallucinogenic passed by House (May 2006). See also: Tennessee House and Tennessee Senate. (Thanks Embroglio and MG)
An awsome thread with great advice. Ive tried salvia on 4 seperate experiances but I think only truly triped once. Out of the four I only had a trip sitter on my first experiance. It was what I would consider a mild experiance so I thought I could handle it alone. On my next trip I was alone in my back yard about 12 am. It was just me and the wife for the nite so I had a fire and a smoke when I decided I wanted to try it again. That's when I had my true trip. I used a water bong and packed a nice bowl took one huge rip, and started to count to 30. I dont remember exhaling just all the sudden like life had stopped and someone grabbed me and I started switching places with other people. Then all of the sudden I had the feeling of running around the inside of a school bus. All of the time I had the feeling that what I was feeling was going to last forever. When I came out I was about 10 feet from where I had started half in the weeds. Had mud on my leg's and felt like someone had kicked me in the ass. Im not sure how long all of it lasted but the after buzz lasted a good hour. When it was over I found my bong lyeing next to the fire and realized how lucky I was that I hadnt fallen/stepped into the fire. The trip was different but the buzz was awsome. That's my experiance:thumbsup:
