I don't think you can score schizophrenia as a direct result of weed smoking, but if you have psych problems laying dormant just under the surface, I'd say it could very well set them off. But it sounds like you're safe. I'd be more worried about winding up completely drug-fucked after 10 years straight of smoking everyday. Nobody wants to end up like Ozzy Osbourne. Minus the money and fame, of course.

Hey there. I'm sorta late getting into this discussion, but MyselfandI already posted you a good basic description of schizophrenia above. Here it is again:

"A mental disorder lasting for at least 6 months, including at least 1 month with two or more active-phase symptoms. Active-phase symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, and grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior. Schizophrenia is accompanied by marked impairment in social or occupational functioning."

Basically, people with schizophrenia hear strange voices, have hallucinations, don't think or react in normal patterns, and behave strangely. I've known two people who had it--one who's the son of one of my husband's nurses, and one who was a brother of one of my oldest friends. They both take medication to control the symptoms, but they still struggle. They hear threatening voices telling them strange things. They see things that aren't there. And basically their minds just play constant tricks on them.

People with schizophrenia aren't generally folks you ordinarily run into in the day-to-day activities of life. They have a hard time holding jobs or going to school because their delusions and voices give them trouble. Often they can be mistaken for being mildly retarded because they just behave differently, and the meds they take often cause strange side-effects, too.

Enough about that. If you're hearing voices, seeing things, and your mind is playing tricks on you, it won't hurt to be screened by a professional. Big Cal is right that, just like other mental illnesses, schizophrenia tends to come on in late adolescence/early adulthood. Like between 18 and 24. It rarely begins anew in people older than 30, but there are probably lots of people walking around who have it who've never been officially diagnosed. Experts say a significant percentage of the homeless population displays symptoms that would be classified as shizophrenia.

A screening by a psychiatrist or qualified psychologist or social worker is easy and painless. But if someone does have the disease, only a psychiatrist can prescribe meds for it. They basically just ask you questions like, "Do you ever hear strange voices or see strange visual effects?" They also rely heavily on the input of people's families in confirming the strange behaviors and symptoms. Other mental illnesses can cause similar symptoms. Severely bi-polar people, for instance, can go through phases where they have hallucinations or disordered thinking.

Different people believe different things about whether weed can bring on schizophrenia. Apparently there've been some studies that indicated it can bring on schizophrenic symptoms, and I know it can at times bring on paranoia even in regular, non-mentally ill folks. If you're really worried about weed potentially causing a problem, the solution is simple: don't smoke weed.

^^^^ birdgirl hit it dead on. But yeah trust me if you were schizophrenic or saw someone with schizophrenia you would be 100% sure that something was majorly wrong. They just act totally different than an average person would. Since my grandma has it, i've heard the most crazy things come out of here mouth it was unbelieveable. But the three symptoms you MUST have inorder to be diagnosed with schizophrenia is visual hallucinations, auditory hallucinations and dillusions. If you don;'t have all three of those you should be in the clear. :thumbsup:

Schizotypal personality disorder should not be confused with schizophrenia. People with schizotypal personality disorder tend to have odd beliefs and behaviors, but they are not profoundly disconnected from reality and usually do not hallucinate. (Hallucinations, delusions, and complete unawareness of reality are hallmarks of untreated or unsuccessfully treated schizophrenia).

HI all I'm new here maybe I can shed some light on this subject. I have schizophrenia. I came down with it at age 19 I'm now 29.

There has been a link between schiz and marijuana. Marijuana can trigger schiz in people with the genetic disposion twards the illness. Not everyone that smokes pot will divelope the disease

In my case no one in my family has schiz and I have alot of family members that smoke pot.

Schiz is not that uncommon of an illness statistics have indicated that 1 percent of the U.S. population has the illness. Next to depression it is the second most common mental illness.

As severe and debilitating as the illness is its also very treatable. I had it quite severe. When I came down with the illness I had hallucinations and dellusions.

I started smokeing pot at age 13 by the time I was 17 I was using every day. At one point I consumed no less then 3 grams and no more then 1 ounce every day for 6 months.

Paranoia started to set in and I started thinking my friends and family were plotting to harm me. The conspericies and paranoia got worse to the point I quit leaving the house. I didnt leave the house for 8 months. I was so paranoid I wouldnt walk in front of the windows. I quit smoking pot when I quit leaving the house.

One day it was like a switch went off in my head and I started hearing voices. The paranoia got so severe I thought people were poisening my food and water so I quit drinking and eating.

My mom had enough and got me to go to the hospital. I was diagnosed with paranoid shcizoaffective disorder.

In the state I was in it was like living a nightmare I couldnt wake up from the terror and fear was unbelivable.

When I was in the hospital I was so drugged I slept for two month straight.

I've been on medication ever since. As of now I no longer have hallucinations and lead a normal life. I work at Ford Mo Co and no one there knows I have schiz.

I still take medication and I wont quit taking it because I had a relapse once. I quit taking it and ended up back in the hospital.

I've tried smoking weed sereral times over the years but I get so paranoid I want to hide under my bed. So I've pretty much given up trying.

I'm here to learn how to grow it so I can make some money off people I know.

To the author of this thread check this link out you might find some helpfull info. And if your having mental problems stop smoking you'll only make things worse for yourself.
