Reno 911 was the show I thought of when I saw "Cops."
...pretty soon the Daily Show will be my only source of news and then my whole sense of reality (and reality based entertainment) will finally, finally be defeated. amen.
I've watched Cops about as often as I've watched Survivor, or it's hilarious spoof rip-off Fear Factor (isn't that on Comedy Central?)

This is off topic. Oneironaut, I find you to be one of the most intelligent people on the boards, and I agree with you in that government is infinitely flaw prone. I used to consider myself an anarchist years ago, but frankly, I think the human race is doomed in whatever we do. That's why I don't get myself all worked up at how ridiculous everything is anymore. Even the most intelligent people are hopelessly inconsistent. Have you noticed? This is as good as it will ever get.
Hey, I didn't choose to watch TRL. It was on in a public place where I happened to be at the moment. And the people around me were very interested. Even those channels which are supposed to be educational have to be dumbed down to a large degree so the average Joe can follow along, and they can't present any ideas that might offend a significant number of people. And the commercials get very annoying very quickly. It's as if I'm reading a book and every ten minutes somebody takes it away from me and starts talking about how great their laundry detergent is. Now that you mention it, my interest in these shows is certainly waning. I've been having a lot more fun since I turned off the tube and started living life. I've been learning to control my dreams, teaching myself several languages, stargazing, developing my personal philosophy, and even getting into Mongolian throat singing, among other things, all of which are infinitely more fulfilling than watching some television show.Quote:

I'm glad you agree with me. I too don't let modern music or television influence me. I observe it rather like an alien would, examining what it is and what it means about our culture. And frankly, it scares the shit out of me when I compare it to the popular culture of the past. Nothing means anything to anyone anymore, like nothing had meaning to me during my youth when I wasted so many precious years in front of the tube mindlessly absorbing whatever was on. I was lucky enough to break myself out of that vicious cycle and am afraid I might slip into it again if I observe too much too often.Quote:

If anarchism is impossible, how have anarchist societies thrived in the past for years? How was it that thousands of anarchist collectives and voluntary popular militias were able to defend themselves against Franco's fascist army in the Spanish Civil War for several years? People used to say the republic was impossible, that without the absolute rule of a monarch society would collapse into chaotic disorder. That didn't happen when republics were established. Same goes for anarchy. People say that with that kind of increased freedom, people would be allowed to murder and rape and pillage all they want, but this has not borne out in the anarchist societies of the past. You'd be hard pressed to find stories of mass murderers gone unpunished in the Spanish anarchist collectives, or in the anarchist communities of the Ukraine during the Russian Revolution. In fact, it has been one of the primary goals of anarchist societies to prevent people from asserting their domination over others, be it by rape, murder or government. Just because people weren't being bossed around didn't mean they were vulnerable to anybody who decided to assert their authority through violence. If anarchist societies were possible in the past, why is there any reason to assume they're impossible now? Government is certainly not inevitable, and power not a basic instinct. Government has been around for only about 1% of human history. Before that people generally lived as equals, without bosses and politicians, and were quite happy that way. But this is really a discussion for the Politics board, so I'll shut up now.
