wikipedia encyclopedia:
Thunder is the sound of the shockwave caused when lightning instantly heats the air around it to up to 30 000 °C (54 000 °F). That super-heated air expands rapidly, then contracts as it cools. The rapid expansion/contraction generates sound waves, making the sound that is called "thunder."
Since sound and light travel at different speeds through the atmosphere, one can time the interval between them to roughly estimate how far away the bolt of lightning is. The speed of sound in air is approximately 340 m/s (761 mph), while the speed of light is so fast that the lightning is seen only a few microseconds after the event.
Lol, sorry if I confused anyone with my lame sense of humor.
Awesome pic, nothing like sitting on the back porch, smoking a bowl, and watching a thunderstorm.

thats an awesome pic. I love watching thunderstorms, they're amazing
I was out in the high dessert of Arizona one summer looking for arrowheads.
Could see a storm rapidly approaching, the clouds were windswept and touching the ground. I tried to get back to my vehicle a mile a way. Didnt make it.
Had about 3 lightning bolts like in the picture you have come within several hundred feet of me. Close enough! Tremendous power and shock wave. Ill never forget that sound.
I was just praying I didnt get hit. I was as tall as most pinion pine trees out there, so I had to just crouch down and ride it out. I got slammed with rain in nothing but a t-shirt.
Found 6 perfect arrowheads that day and when I look at them I always think of that lighting storm and the close call.
good pic.
