We adapt to our surroundings, we develop an ear for the way people talk in order to understand them, and whichever accent has the most play in your environment (which also tends to become the accent you most understand) is more than likely the accent you'll pick up. Any other way of talk you hear will be an "accent" in your world, because that way of speaking/pronounciation is not the form of speak you understand the most.
But I wonder...do Brits find Americans accents as hard to understand as we find their accents to be? Ghosttoker?
