I have held 3 pets as they passed and I would not trade that moment for anything in the world. If you have the strength now or could prepare yourself before Saturday I would say from experience to be there with him. No question. He will feel your love and iit will help him to pass. Looking them in the eye, as Zero Revolt said, is a connection that can never be broken. He will go in peace and you can step forward easier. Its hard to go in but priceless and the reward is eternal.
If you cant bring yourself to be in the room then I would suggest that you have a quiet moment elsewhere while it happens and focus on nothing but Socks, even speak out to him, he will feel you with him and will not feel as though he passed alone. This is my belief.
I dont know you bro but I ,along with your friends here no doubt, will be thinking of you and him on Saturday and sending strength because I know what that moment feels like.
We come from One
In Life we sometimes forget
But, In Death we remember
Peace and Strength bro

Sorry to hear that sted, it must be hard, but it's for the best, and everything will surely work out in the end. By the way, stop all the stories about the other pets dying, as it is making me very sad to hear...

Your memories of your pup mean he was a good dog that had a worthwhile and purposeful life. The pain you feel now sux but trust me, once it goes, you will look back and smile when you remember him. Hang in there.

the sad thing is dogs are so tough.... they hide their pain and suffering so well.
when a dog actually gets around to showing pain and discomfort,he is probably really really hurting .....you are doing the right thing
But I know even though you know it is the right thing , the guilt always haunts you.... it really sucks.. :( just try to remember all the good times you have had with him and know love means letting go...
I know what your feeling...be strong...
big hug..

Wow thanks everyone, I really didn't expect this much support you guys are all great. If you are ever in the Victoria, BC are and don't mind getting high with a young hippie then let me know.
Yesterday was the day, I wanted to take him for a walk but his feet are ulcerated so I just let him lie in the sun for a while. By 1 oclock the deed was done, I won't go into the sad details but it was an awful thing to have to do. Still I'm glad I was there with him when he passed and I kept my composure (cried quietly while it was happening) until we got back into the car. His collar is hanging on my wall now.
As sad as it was, I know he's not in pain anymore and thats what matters.
Peace love and understanding.
