I dont know about the whole artificial life thing, but i agree it does seem possible.

Jabberwacky is an odd one. Occasionally it seems very very lifelike, but other times its answers seem like total jibberish. This is due to the fact that it learns from every1 it chats with. So how realistic it is depends on how realistic you are with it. Apparently it has the ability to examine our speach and from that determin the context in which to use it. It can even reportedly "learn" other languages. While this bot is pretty good at chatting, its actual intelligence in any other subject but speach is nonexistent. Also you can edit its answers if you think of a better one..

Can't seem to find where i put that link. I'll post it if i find it. http://www.cyc.com/cyc/applications/cycsecure is still an interesting project though, if your into network security.
