I topped a few plants and didn't realize any reduction in their vertical growth I just ended up with 4 "tops" which grew higher then the original main stem wihtin a few days.

outdoor plants should be budding annnnytime. I wouldn't manicure your plant anymore until you wanna harvest
BTW you can bend branches down all you want even while budding, just not if they're too thick or they may snap. I had to bend the tops of my plants like a MF'r to keep them below the fence, almost every day I was bending one top or another down. Now they're getting close to finishing they have stopped growing vertically.

That is awesome that you can grow without chicken wire. In ohio the rabbits would have a MJ salad if someone tried that.
