it may sound wrong, but when you trap them, get a stick.
and not hard, but very sternly give each one a little whack. not enough to break or bruise anything, but more so to associate your trash with pain. kind of like how you can train a dog with a stern smack. same principle, though a little harsher for the outdoor vermin.

Go to tractor supply or homedepot and get a live animal trap- best bait for a coon is to take a small piece of chicken and put into a microwave for a few seconds, this will juice it up - then i take the chicken a put on a safety pin and suspend it above trap release- inside the trap - I also hang a silver spoon with the chicken- the shinny makes the coons curious- I have trapped a lot of coons this way - 6 this year alone- earlier this year coons got into my chicken coupe a killed all my laying hens over a weeks time- coons are very smart and I tried a lot of baits before I came up with one they can not resist- also when you release them make sure to take a long ways off - they will return if let go only a few miles away

you can actually buy coyote urine off the internets to keep them away or yeah, like the above poster said buy a live animal trap at a feed store and haul 'em off, just be careful they can bite and, as was said, can carry rabies.

Get some stuff called Critter-Ridder and sprinkle it on the food garbage. It has hot peppers in it. It won't harm them but once they get a taste of it, they won't come back so fast.

Well, besides killing or hurting them, which he doesn't want to do, what else is there other than using a repellant such as the one I mentioned, or making the garbage impossible for them to access?
