So the reasons are more mechanical, for lack of a better word, than having to do with the root growth.
Scientixt - I noticed you didn't clean all the loose plastic from the underside of the holes you drilled. You might want to take some sandpaper and de-burr your holes. Otherwise, many of those little pieces of plastic will get into your solution and could eventually damage or clog your pump.
