I think that you may have been right on your first guess. It looks like about 1/2 OZ to me too.
It can be hard to tell depending on how compressed, damp and/or seedy it might be.
However, it def is not an OZ. As a reference, below is a pic of 30 grams of "The Chronic".

man i got a nice digiweigh scale off of ebay for like 10 bucks plus 3 dollar shipping...ive had it for about a year and it works great...if u went to any smokeshop to get this same scale they would charge about 50- 70 dollars so ebay is a good place for a scale

I see at least 15 buds that look as if they could weigh in excess of a gram each. In that case you would probably come close to the ounce you thought you had. However, again this is a question that no one will be able to answer. Invest in a new scale and yeah never buy quanities if you don't see them weighed out in front of you. When I pick up ounces my dealer weighs it out without me even having to ask. It's just a common courtesy I suppose..
