they can be protective, since i live out in the country and never have people come down my mile long driveway but if they do he lets us know so they can be good guard dogs but mine i believe is just a sissy dog. and yes NEVER EVER let that dog off his leash! he will sprint and you will never catch him, we finally had to get an electric fence for mine because he kept digging to get out the regular fence we put up and it pissed me off! they can get hit or someone will gladly pick up that beautiful dog so get an electric fence if you had too, or the electric collar that im still thinking about just so i can train him to quit running away and they will not listen to you! if they are in your grasp they listen to you but soon as they smell that freedom forget it they are gone.......and they shed like freakin crazy! bust out the vacuum and suck that shit up but do some googling on it and you will find out everything you want to know and never shave a husky, omgaw never! the figment that pic looks crazy, lol.....

I agree with crispi that bully breeds are the way to go. Google 'molossers'. It's the general type of dog that includes bullies and mastiffs.
In my experience they are a nice combination of protective but good with kids, and very calm in the house. I have never seen a bully with separation anxiety... they aren't dumb, but they aren't so intellectual that they will amuse themselves by eating your house when they get bored.
MY experience with them is:
-I own an Olde English Bulldogge/ Boxer cross (I do NOT recommend a boxer for a first time dog owner because they actually ARE super smart and can be destructive, but great and loyal dogs, and they have a silly habit of grooming themselves like cats). She came from the shelter when she was 3 years old and is just an amazing, calm, loyal dog who loves kids and puts herself in between me and strangers and just stands there like, yeah, i'm not gonna bite you but you aren't coming any closer! This is basically the same foundation cross as an Annapolis Valley Bulldog from Nova Scotia... HIGHLY recommended.
-My last tenant had an English mastiff and 3 American bulldogs. The bulldogs were really nice animals but it was the mastiff who I really loved. 200 pounds of lovable drool. Also very protective and VERY calm. He was one of those dogs who waits until you sit somewhere and then plops himself down at your feet for a nap
-My current tenants have an American Staffordshire Terrier. This isn't a pit bull but they are often confused. He's a really nice dog and very calm and obedient for a puppy.
One more thing about bullies is that they aren't typically barkers. They will bark once or twice to warn you that there is someone outside but don't get into barking matches with the neghborhood dogs, which is a major problem where I live... there's 2 black labs a couple houses down in one direction, and a couple schnauzers the other way, and I get so pissed listening to them bark all the fucking time.
Anyway there's some info for ya.
If I had to pick a perfect dog for a first time owner, it would be a bully from a shelter who is already about 2 years old or more.

I agree with stinkyattic Boxers are awesome but not for your first dog!

Yeah you can really see the Tess' boxer half in this pic... check the square snout... the thing she's doing, pawing at random stuff, is one of the reasons the breed got its name. they really act like they have hands, not paws, lol.

but IMO she is the perfect example of what a bully should be; even though she's a mix, she's a good solid bulldog.
