Let me break it down for you guys. If you believe or follow the Church of Satan's teachings: you are religious for the purpose of this poll.
Agnostic means you don't know or don't want to draw any conclusions as to the existence of a higher power.
Atheist means you don't believe in a higher power.
Not sure how it could get much simpler?
The young are often agnostic or claim atheism- it's part of the "young and dumb" syndrome that we all go through. Experience and time usually correct this. Talk to me about your beliefs when you hit 50 or so. Most of you will have a religion by then.
Me, I'm Wiccan. I keep a low profile because I live in a rural, red-neck town, but Wiccan I am, non-the-less. (I even help the Catholic kids with their catechism lessons when they were in the after-school program- I know my bible, but Christianity is not for me.) I'm a solitary, which means I don't have a coven.
When I was in college (first time around), I had both day and night classes and rather than ride the bus home, grab a sandwich and get right back on the bus to go back, I just stayed at the college. To fill the time, I read my way through the library (speed reader + 4 hours = a lot of books). Religion was in the low numbers on the shelves and I read most of what was there and came out Wiccan. "And if it hurts none, do what you will." And before you ask, yes, I cast spells occasionally - usually for healing- and yes, they often work, Goddess willing. (Spells are just prayers with props to get you in the mood to communicate with Goddess.)
I'm more what is called a "kitchen" or "Green" witch- I use herbs a lot and I'm not too fussy about my spell components (the Gardnerian-types are SO serious and ritual bound- they make me giggle sometimes). A few hundred years ago, I would have been the "Granny in the woods" giving out love potions and advice to the village lads and lasses. Goddess bless you all. - Granny:hippy:
though it's true that the closer you get to death the more likely you are to embrace religion, not all of us atheists fit into the narrow mold of your above stated "syndrome". my "young and dumb" years were spent as an agnostic, searching for some bit of truth that would enable me to embrace a meaningful faith. though i dabbled in eastern and western philosophies, i never found more than myth and magic or smoke and mirrors. i maintained my status as a seeker until relatively late in life. the exact circumstances are unimportant, but i finally came to the realization that all faiths seemed to be based on nothing more than wishful thinking and that if any answers did exist they would not be found in dogma or dusty tomes. i suppose i'm still searching and will be until the day i die, but i no longer seek faith. now my quest is for a way of life that utilizes those few talents i possess in a way that enriches both those around me and myself.Quote:

"Young and Dumb".
I like this. The only reason why there's so many older religious people is because they're hoping to hell that in a few years, when they "go", that there's something other than nothing there for them. I don't think they can accept the belief that there's nothing there.
So can we label these people "Old And Trying To Make Up For Every Bad Thing They've Ever Done"?
Personally, i don't believe in anything more "spiritual" than a human. IMO, thinking there's a spirit looking down on us is equivalent to a 4 year old thinking there's a monster in his or her closet. No proof. A crazy story where 4 guys could have been smoking up and just writing their hearts out. Just seems a hell of alot more logical to me.
Another thing i find funny is when you ask church officials the question "why do bad things happen to good people?" They respond "it's the will of god" or something similar. No, fuck that shit. What a cop out.
All the church scandals simply solidifies (sp) my beliefs. God's "messengers of his word" rape little boys. Yeah, that's what god wants, right? :wtf:
And i'm not ignorant about Christianity. I've read the bible and i went to a Catholic high school. Religion turns me off BIG TIME.
I also like those gung ho Christians with bumper stickers all over their car, and the Jahova's Witnesses that show up to my house every few weeks. Yeah, thanks but no thanks weirdos.
i would say that you're greatly right! lol seriously if we have to be really objective, there's the same chance of having something or nothing after death. But i would say personnaly this be more rallistic of the "empty" theory. Also, some religions like christianisism don't deserve to have i place in the hunt for the truth of the death because of what they did to other humans
Last time I checked, religion was a very complicated thing. . .Quote:

I believe in His Noodly Appendage- the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
I also believe in myself, the good will of people, the right to your OWN lifestyle, and the beauty of nature.
I believe in god... I dunno why... I just feal it. Even tho sometimes I doubt his existance... but what do I do when I am scared shitless? I pray to god.. so thats why I believe in god. you may not agree that there is a god and thats ok just dont hate on me because I believe in god.. we all have are beliefs... plus also i believe in god because weed and the nature around us is just so BEAUTIFUL and I just think some type of good god created all this for us.. I just dont understand the Pain part of life and why would god lets it happen.. really frustrates me inside that sometimes thinking about this...
i am omnitheist.
very pagan like, could be considerably Buddhist, but it is a philosophy more than anything else.
Apostles' Creed:)
Kind of the same here. I'm religious but i'm a Pagan, so i don't like to classify it as a "religion" because it's not organized and such..Quote:

Dude, I just wanna thank you for being a theist and not being a total asshole, declaring everybody else undoubtedly wrong and all your answers unquestionably right. I don't know why more religious folk can't at least be open enough to ask all the questions and consider all the options, even if you don't understand them yet.Quote:

Anyway... now im religious again. I was raised christian, then in my early twenties become more and more un-religious. But then i started to smoke, and realized the importance, and truth, of the religion. Even atheists have one. I think atheists religion is the reason, or the science. So, now im religious again. Not the one which goes to the church every sunday, but the one who believes in God and sees His kindness through many simple things in the life... Its like ive read somewhere:Quote:

I was Christian raised, turned into an Athiest, sort of a buddhist, not really...its weird because my dad was a Christian/spirtual before, now he's just sprititual...my mom I'm not sure of, but shes buddhist now and my sister was Christian -> then buddhist...I can't follow anything but my own collected views on life lol...
I want to start a new religion, one that brings everyone's religion together...but goes more towards good ethics like world peace ;D. one day...
Once I found the word Deist, then and only then did I know I found my belief....for myself.
I pretty much consider myself an atheist, but spiritual, and still a good Unitarian, lol.
