it will be great once all the teething probs are sorted, ive not upgraded and have no intention in the near future, too many issues and to much overhead.
my friend recently built a rig based around an overclocked 6300 and a top of the line dx9 ati card, also clocked, he has no end of crashes and issues mainly down to ati driver compatability, but hes got vista for when it eventually gets some support..
guess what, hes now running xp-pro and it runs like lightning!
vista for me had ALOT of start up programs and crap... after i turned all of teh startup crap off, like other then OS and the stuff i really need it runs ok.
still gets alot of errors.... but the more serious ones (which involve having to restart) usually only start showing up after the pc's been on for a long time, or under alot of stress (alot of programs going)
same here..... it was a pain in the ass.Quote:

EVERY 5 FUCKING YEARS, THIS BULLSHIT HAPPENS TO ME.
all the new OS means is, My computer will be exactly the same when I upgrade except I wont be able to find "my computer" or "recycling bin" for a week, I will have to get all new software, including an Autocad station for work. Sounds awesome!
I get sick of this moronic bullshit they cram up our ass, their selling points which are all total bullshit!
Protect yourself against this and that! SpyWAre!! Spam! Download music easier! Y2k! A camera comes installed on your computer!! In case you are such a fucking moron that you cant plug in a usb cable, even though this is supposedly YOUR computer!!! What do those people's videos look like? Them just sitting on the floor rolling in their own shit yelling "DDDDDAAAAAAAHH!". Makes rolling in your own shit one click easier!
Its like banks and their fraud protection they go on and on about, that noone ever needs to pay for, but I hear that shit 100 times a day.
this man is right. so FUCK vista...ill stick with what i got. works perfect. so i see no need to change. did i already say fuck vista?? oh ya i did :thumbsup:Quote:

I got vista...not a whole lot of problems...but I don't do very much either (cannabis.com ebay, email). I had autocad on my last pc, I've opted to not install it yet.... I tried to find a new pc with XP on it instead, but the only place that had them was TigerDirect, and refurbished not new...those were more expensive than the vista..i guess do to demand. So I opted for the cheaper route.....
In conclusion, if you do a bunch of stuff with your pc and it is still working okay, stick with your old one for awhile, till all the software makers catch up with vista. If you are like me and don't do anything that you rely on terribly and it just happens to take a shit-go ahead, it's not that bad, get the vista.
I've had it a few months.
 Bree
Edit: I've never had the illegal operation, must shut down message...YET, KNOCK ON WOOD
I did make the computer stop asking me about every Fuckin' thing I open though, as best as I could
I've checked it out and it looks ok but microsoft always has a bunch of screw-ups which we always pay for. I'll stick with XP and a Vista theme pack for now, until they get there bugs sorted out. And until some hacker get under those codes.
how'd you do that? cuz it is quite fucking annoying... somethings it'll even ask you up to 3 seperate times if you're sure/aware/w/e of what you're opening...Quote:

I can't even get Vista drivers for my Radeon 9250. Having to stick with the XP drivers, and fuck knows what's up with my sound card...
After trying Vista, there is *no way* in hell that I would upgrade to it. The copy that I was testing on two of my machines here at my office were *very* slow after loading Vista, and one of these were rendered literally useless, even after disabling the Aero interface to help speed things up. I ended up reimaging both boxes and reloading XP Pro which works very smooth as before.
I am considering buying an XPS Notebook from Dell, but I want it with XP Pro, NOT Vista. If I can't have Vista, then I will just buy a used one on eBay that has XP, or I have to re-image the new machine on arrival from Dell. It might just be cheaper to buy a used notebook anyway. The XPS notebooks rock, BTW!
Also, Vista contains all the DRM crap, TONS of security alerts, etc, etc... These are more reasons to avoid it at all costs! Why support a product which fosters content restrictions and the ability to play high-def DVD's which are not "approved" by M$?
For me, I am sticking with XP. It's tried, true, and works great. :)
You can disable all the security alerts and shit like that, you know?Quote:

SONY VAIO, WINDOWS VISTA.............AND A J........WHAT CAN I SAY.
I haven't bothered to read the entirety of this thread, but I personally find Windows Vista to be a load of BS.
If all you're doing is like, Internet, word processing etc, there's absolutely no use in a fuckin' expensive OS that overall just makes everyday computing a whole lot harder. In fact.. there's no use for Vista even if you are doing more than everyday tasks lol.
Ive been using Ubuntu 7.04 (linux) since it came out (earlier this year). fuckin' excellent alternative to windows/mac, and its completely free for download.
i'm sure everyone else that posted has already informed you of all the shit bits about vista, so i won't bother.
The general angst against Vista really came from psuedo-tech geeks, who immediately hated the product before it even came out.
Working in an office that is doing a migration to Vista for over 2000 machines in this location alone, I can tell you that Vista is a damn fine OS.
All the problems with security, and speed of the machine, they can be resolved really easily. Turn off UAC, turn off the security features that bother you, and make sure you are, you know, using a machine from the last 3-4 years.
The only legit problem I have run into since starting the transition is that Vista handles network traffic, and likes to speak in a different protocol by default, to machines other then XP. We have some win2000 machines that we still run, because of legacy apps, and Vista doesnt like to talk back and forth to the win2000 machine without alot of work, at least through our network. Its also a bitch to try to dameware into Vista machines from XP.
Id still recommend giving it to SP1 to buy if you havent already, it wont hurt. But if you use common sense, read the actual requirements for the OS, and take a bit of time to learn about the OS, you will find its a decent enough version of Windows. It just likes to handhold alot at the beginning, which annoys some. But apparently it doesnt annoy them enough to take 3 minutes to search google on how to turn off the annoying features, which is all it takes on almost any problem.
The Vista machines we have running in our office, they are pratically XP with better features at the moment. You can turn Aero off if you want, and when the desktop isnt being displayed, the footprint for Aero is decreased, so that you arent using up as much time processing the UI parts that arent being shown. Aero also completely turns itself off while you are in a full screen application, unlike XP or before, so you are actually getting more power to game in Vista.
The big holdup at this moment, if I really had to pick one, is the software/hardware side. The OS itself is pretty damn nice, but vendors arent working well with MS on this, in getting Vista drivers out for older hardware, and making sure that they release patches for Vista for their software. Thats not MS's fault however, they have no control over that. But its still a major downside.
i was just about to post a similar thread. i just got a laptop w/ vista. i don't think i'm computer saavy enough to get into the details of what's supposed to be so bad about it (except when i just read that vista has piracy protection and stuff). but for the most part, i like it. the menus and buttons are a bit hard to find at first but i can get used to them. i like that windows now looks like a combination of Mac OSX and Internet Explorer. the skins are pretty slick looking. but if you guys know any problems with vista i might wanna know about, post em up. 'precinate ya.
this toshiba laptop is pretty sweet too. it's the Satellite P205 S6307. 17" widescreen, dual core 1.83 ghz processor, full keyboard w/ numberpad, not too heavy on the lap, and so on. i recommend it for anyone looking for a laptop in the $1000 range. didn't get good ratings for gaming though, but i'm not really a big gamer so that doesn't matter to me too much.
Switch to kubuntu or ubuntu! sorry im crunk im moment. Linux is great. I had some slight problems at first but they were easily fixed. Plus you can get almost any program you could ever want for free! It's pretty awesome; If you are a Windows user I would get kubuntu, if mac then ubuntu.
After SP1 I'll add it to the boot menu...
Iv recently got vista ultimate 64, mainly for the benefit of future games, dx10 and no more RAM limits.
Il run it along side XP till i'm used to it though, and as above, SP1 will probably be out by the time I get round to installing vista, im in no rush as XP is still the better OS...for now
...I think Vista has great potential.

I am a gamer, and it is too much of a hassle to either have dual boot just to play my games in a windows enviroment, or have to emulate windows inside linux.Quote:

SP1 will give a good reason to re-evaluate the OS for most reviewers, and I think by then they will have gotten over their "omg vista is teh debil!" premindset, and they might actually review the OS properly. Really its amazing that the crux of the problems that most people have are fixed with 5 minutes of work, or recognizing that a computer from 4 years ago might not work with a new OS.Quote:

And personally, it took me more time to get XP working the way I wanted it then it did for Vista. Spent alot less time fooling around in the registry after the Vista install then I did with XP. And thank god they stopped the stupid fucking "updates have been installed restart now or later, but by later, we mean that you can click later like 5 times, and then we restart for you" setup.
I upgraded to XP from windows 2000 (the best windows OS IMO) a year ago only because certain programs I needed required it.
SP3 for XP is supposed to add the security features available in Vista to XP. SP1 was just released for Vista - it's a beta though. Nothing like unleashing buggy software and letting your custies do the testing for you.
Its the best way to get any problems ironed out in a shorter time scale, a lot of people ive noticed are slating the crysis beta, which s equaly pointless...the purpose of beta testing is just that, to report problems.Quote:

well, i got my vista running pretty much just as smoothly as xp ran... i don't realy have any problems with it anymore... it really is just a matter of ironing out the kinks of it... and of course having a pc powerful enough to actually run it.... vista really is a resource hog...
anyways... there are still a copule of annoyances, but they are extremely minor and extremely rare.... honestly, could have the same exact problems in XP...
just like with most great things, they require a bit of tinkering to get them to work like you want and expect them too.... there are very few things thta don't require some type of set-up and is 100% perfect and configured straight outta the box.... and none of those few things are electronics, atleast recent ones...
vista has been great to me
runs everything i have thrown at it
its quick
installs new software and hardware instantly, and if you dont have disk, it finds for you
im on the 32 bit not 64 bit
Don't have to look too hard to find that the final product - Vista, is anything but polished and customers are stuck paying full price for beta software.Quote:

And please, enlighten me, how is Vista beta software?Quote:

Its not like Vista was announced far in advance, and its not like they were given the specifications for Vista so that they could code the drivers and software updates ahead of time...
As far as the SP1 beta test, they do it because it makes everyone happy. People who want to get the updates before everyone else can get it, and in return for getting access to it early, MS is able to beta test it on a large scale audience, because honestly it doesnt matter how great your in house QA people are, you will miss things that will be found when you have a large amount of people all screwing with the software. You have to purposely seek out the update, because it is beta it isnt pushed to anyone who doesnt want it.
Vista sucks period...
SHitty gaming compatibility and it has like 100 thousand problems with hardware such as wireless mouses and printers.. ect
It sucks.
um.... i have quite a few games installed on my computer and am always installing more, no problems....Quote:

They dictate what access and control 3rd party vendors have to their POS OS. Each major vendor at one point or another during vistas development has griped about M$ and their dealings together.Quote:

At least they seem to have learned something from the XP fiasco, to lock the OS tight.
I had a harder time going from 2000 to XP then I did XP to Vista. Ive actually gotten more MSDOS games to work under Vista then I could under XP.Quote:

Vista had alot better start then XP, and is alot better OS then XP. I dreaded the switch to XP from 2000, it was going from a solid OS to a peice of crap, and it wasnt until just after SP1 that XP was actually stable enough and worked well enough that it was worthwhile using. Until that point, it was like a rehash of ME.
I literally had to save a batch file that ran all the scripts to change the configuration of XP on a new install becuase it took too long to do manually, and I reinstall every 3-4 months to keep things squeaky clean.
lol, whatever, go buy an applepod or whatever its called.
like the guy said, XP didnt come into its own untill updates were released, XP pre-sp2 wasnt half what it is now.
