i like rap. i wouldnt consider it as talented as like say classic rock or anything where people play their own instraments and write usually meaningful lyrics. cept i do like rap a lot. but i agree with other people on here who say its not "real" music. im sure it takes some talent (obv) but just not as much as other things.
I think GOOD rap has a lot more talent than any music. This is just my opinion. "Let you chain hang low" and Lil Jon are NOT rap. Its shitty shit. Its nothing, as far as I'm concerned.
I'm talking about artists like Nas, Jay-Z, Tupac, Biggie, Eminem. Listen to any Eminem song. The lyrics, rhymes, rhyme scheme, flow, and content are very complex. He produces his songs and beats too. These guys are lyrical geniuses. The shit these guys say is real, and happens everyday.
Rock and Roll is cool and all, but a lot of shit sounds the same...just guitars, bass, drums, and sometimes unnecessary screaming, and you don't even know what the fuck they are saying. Most rap beats are so unique they can't be duplicated if you tried. From the choruses, to the bridges, to the flow, change of speed, melody, lyrics, down to the metaphors and similies, it requires more creativity than any other music genre combined! Not real music??!? This is the realest genre of music. No bullshit included. You don't hear to many metaphors in other kinds of music do you? Once again, I mean GOOD rap. A lot of things people consider rap is shit.
Point made. I guess to look at it like that, it doesn't take much talent, or as much talent be one demensional as opposed to multiple. I still wouldn't say it's not real music. It is jazz with lyrics. Not much harmony, but it takes more to create a rap verse then a song verse, you have to have twice as many bars, and at times up to three times as much (depends on what songs you compare)
to create a rap verse versus a verse of any other genre. So in some ways it takes less talent, and in some ways it takes more talent. For the right folk, it takes the most talent of all. Some rap artist produce their own beats, write and perform their own songs. So for that type of artist, "the triple threat", s/he's the most talented or versitle/multifaceted arranger of all genres. Rap is real music.
wait wait, has anyone here used pro tools or tried making a beat that's actually somewhat good? that is a true skill in itself, as it does require you to have some musical ability to make beats. sure its not playing an acutal instrument, but it takes a lot of talent nonetheless
I have been listening to a lot of rap lately, one of my friends got me hooked on it because he brings cd's everytime we blaze with different shit on it.
jedi mind tricks
immortal technique
wutang clan
ill bill
some other stuff i cant remember but ive downloaded alot of the above mentioned, i gotta say that a lot of rap today is pure shit, that chain hang low being one i hate, i dunno something about rap like that that pisses me off. but dont knock a whole genre of music because there are some shitty songs out there that get a lot of rep. thats like saying ohh i dont like the doors so rock music must suck balls(which nobody would ever say because the doors kick ass)
I just got into rap 2 summers ago, and when I started, i was acting like some bitchy music snob. Only liking underground rap cuz "mainstream" is to crappy...
then i realised i dont wanna be like all those douchy new wave assholes and disregard anything that grants someones attention....So i now i can proudly say that while high, i Nod my head to Creedance Clearwater Reivvial, and T.I in the same 20 min.

wait.....jim Morrison does, he was a douche who pretended he was a "true musical icon" by writing,
"GOD HELP ME GOD HELP ME!"all over some moody journal he held....
wow sorry.
i used to hate rap too, but now that I've listened to the Roots while high I'm into them along with Jurrasic 5, A Tribe Called Quest, old Eminem stuff, Jay- z, etc just poetic rap thats not all about money cash hoes
[quote=Fengzi]I listen to a lot of different music, everything from ACDC to Neil Young to Metallica to Bob Marley to Tchaikovsky to..well, you get the idea. Maybe it's just because I'm old but I just don't get rap. I just don't see how it can even be called music. Most of what I've heard is just some very simple beat played over and over again with someone semi-coherently shouting about "fuckin' hos". Maybe you could call it ghetto peotry or something like that
Yes but at least it's not REGGAETON!! Possibly the worst music ever created, and I'm Spanish. Jerry Garcia is also my fav musician of all time, check out Proof( yeah the guy who was Eminem's hypeman and is now deceased ) he has a pretty damn good cd called SEARCHING FOR JERRY GARCIA
i dont have a comment about the thread title, well yeah its sweet. but the real reason im typing this, is because the views count was at 666 and that was kinda messin with me, so i just visited, making the count a much holyer number.
enjoy!

I cant resist it sober, high, drunk, whatever. It's my music.
I'm not a huge rap fan but I haven't been able to get enough of Enter The Wu-Tang lately. Bring da motha fuckin' ruckus!
Get some Bay area rap like Mac Dre, or some old E40. Such crazy lyrical raps. " The shrooms I consume, it's making me laugh, I'm as high as the eye on a Fing Girrafe." Best rap out there IMO.
I don't really dig most rap or hip-hop. Some of it's pretty mad, like Aussie hip-hop. But I generally listen to music with instruments. Not some gangster pressing buttons then talking over the top. I have broad musical tastes, though, so I'll listen to anything at least once.
One more thing, that argument that everyone thats had a hard life listens to rap, what the fuck was with that? Dude, you wanna hear angry music about killing people to make you feel good, buy some fucking Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Obituary, etc. Death metal shit. Or Nick Cave. Or Johnny Cash. Not some douchewad being paid by MTV to look "gangsta". No offence intended.
Enjoy your music people, whatever it may be.
Peace
listen to Atmosphere when you are high. Now i realize why people who are high listen to these kinds of songs.
so in general
Next time you are high listen to atmosphere and u will see.

THCforme that is also the case for me i listened to just rock before i started smoking and once i did i started to like rap wayyy better then rock
I don't really watch TV at all. And if you'd re-read my post then you'd see that I wasn't telling you to listen to death metal when high. I don't, and don't plan on starting to. And I also never said I dislike all rap. There is good rap, it's just that the majority of hip-hop and rap doesn't appeal to my musical tastes. Read my post again and cut the hate.Quote:

I see where your coming from but you are forgetting to be a good rapper ( good as in critically aclaimed rather than bubblegum commercial sucess) it takes just as much if not more talent then to be a good rocker or good country music singer. This is because that one dimension that rappers do is so much deeper then anything "multidemensional" artists do. Just look at the lyris style and delivery of a Nas, Rakim, Tupac, Biggie, or Saigon compared to a Fall Out Boy, Tim Mcgraw or Guns and Roses. BTW don't get me wrong I like pre emo rock as well, I just happen to like rap more. Happy Token:rasta:Quote:

I also just want to say that Underground Hip Hop has changed my life.
I am just a waaaayyy more chill person.
I don't think anyone can describe what happens when you're baked and you turn on some grade A undergorund hip hop, listening to every word he says, bobbing your head to the beat.......VIBING.
It's the best. And because of it, I don't listen to ANY other type of music, because it's not as satisfying as hip hop.
Listen to some Bone Thugs n some Cypress Hill they got some bomb ass weed songs
No hate, it's too bad we can't type tones of voice. It was the "some gangster pressing buttons and talking over it" that got to me first, implying that hip hop takes no skill, and categorizing it all as the same thing...the second thing that bugged me wasQuote:

It just read as kinda condescending and musically elitist to me, sorry if I misread it.
Hip hops not for everybody, neither is death metal, and neither one is better than the other, and neither one necessarily takes more or less skill.
No hate intended.
Peace.
Don't limit yourself to one genre of music. That would be a shame.
For me, I have gone through stages of music, just as I got through my life.
When I was young 10-14 years old, I listened to alot of rap (I don't believe rap exists anymore. To me, rap was Tupac, Snoop, Biggie, Krazie Bone, Big L, early Eminem, etc. What people call rap today is not rap, its shit, and it's Lil Jon, T.I. and Puff Daddy, or whatever he calls himself now, Diddy I think.) And I listened to it cause thats the kind of kid I was, I lived on an Island in Southeast Alaska, and all my friends listened to the same music, it was normal to me.
Then I moved to the more mainland area of Alaska when I was 14, to the Anchorage/Valley area, and I made new friends, who all listened to rock primarily. Rock to us was Alice In Chains, A Perfect Circle, Tool, Pearl Jam, Ween, and classic rock like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty, Deep Purple, Doors, etc.
But about 2 years ago I moved out of the house, and started being ME. Listening to what I think is cool, and started smoking herb.
This brings me to what I believe is good music today (in no specific order, and not in full):
Hip-Hop:
Jedi Mind Tricks, cLOUDDEAD, Beastie Boys, Swollen Members, Matisyahu, Living Legends, Atmoshpere, Sage Francis, Jurassic 5, Afrika Bambataa, Rakim, Wu-Tang, Tupac, Snoop, Digable Planets, A Tribe Called Quest, MF Doom, Gnarls Barkley, The Roots, Nas, Common, Jay-Z, Erykah Badu, etc.
Rock:
Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, Tool, A Prefect Circle, The Beatles, Beck, Ween, Bob Dylan, Nine Inch Nails, Jack Johnson, Dandy Warhols, Pixies, Queens of the Stone Age, The cure, Stone Temple Pilots, 311, NOfx, The Doors, Rage Against The Machine, Wilco, Blind Melon, etc.
I can easily smoke while jamming to any of these bands.
Although I do prefer Hip-hop when high.
