That would cost me less in the long run, and I could get it soon, but I'm worried about being a first time grower, and using HID's off the bat./shrug (I don't want to kill my babies!)
How do you pull it off? I mean with the HID's for seedlings?
Usually, if you have a good distance from the bulb, they'll be fine. Just check the moisture levels of the medium the seedling is in -- if it's too dry, chances are the bulb is too close or the area too warm, or a combination. If you want to play it safe, buy just a simple medium socket compact fluorescent [ CFL ]. They screw into standard household incandescent sockets, use a whole lot less energy, and give off ultraviolet radiation that stimulates plant growth. You can buy 25w daylight spectrum CFLs at Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. for cheap. The reason to get daylight spectrum is for their higher kelvin output -- meaning that for vegetative growth [ that's from the time it pops the soil's surface until you decide to induce flowering ] you want 5000k light or higher. The daylight spectrum comes with 6500k, which is actually around ~1,500k brighter than the sun's [ Sol's, rather ] visible surface -- or it's photosphere. The slightly higher kelvin output will demote internodal stretching, and promote side branching. Meaning you'll get a bush instead of a long twig with fan leaves. Although, an MH at a distance on a plant from seedling wouldn't hurt, just monitor the temperatures.
And Mobay; get back into growing simply because I want to see another HST'd plant thread. That fucking plant was huge. When I first saw the pictures, this popped in my head http://www.jahozafat.com/0058493028/.../hugebitch.wav

Howdy mand, t'is great to find another uk grower on here, especially one so passionate for growing the herb
Going to enjoy watching your babes grow, WW is a very nice smoke with good medi qualities. :smokin:

Tempting Fate ................
Hello Kush :) , I should be pinching/topping them at least once, I wouldn't mind trying twice but I'll wait and see how they go first.
I've always fancied trying multiple pinching like you're plant, I think it transforms a single plant from being "just a plant" into being basiclly a "bush";)
By the way Kush I always have a tendancy to call it "pinching" more so than "topping" because that's what it really is, I always use my fingernails to just "pinch" off the new growth :o
Hello JunkYard :) , well most will say that a MH/HPS conversion is the best combination and I do agree with that ;) .
I've always started seedlings off under the MH bulb as soon as they poke their sprouts out of the compost.
The thing is just don't get the lamp in to close or else you may risk "frazzling" them with the heat from the bulb. The use of fan is a very good idea, it allows the lamp to be bought in quite close and therefore helps to prevent "overstreching", also it helps to promote strong stem growth.
Altough I'm a bit awkward when it comes to using a fan, I really do try to keep everything down to the bare minimum on a grow..................... it's just "my way" :o
I will use a fan if it gets too hot in the growroom or if there is a problem with humidity, other than that I don't bother because if the weather is ok then I will leave the growroom door open.
Anyway JunkYard, you can see from the pics that at first I will leave the lamp fairly high up over the seedlings and there is a little streching for the first few days, I honestly don't worry about this at all because after the first intial few days the streching stops and the plants begin to fill out.
Oh and as for watering them, I just use one of the little plastic spray gun thingys, I don't use the watering can untill they are transplated into their bigger pots ............................... I find this the best way of getting the amount of water just right ;)
Hello Mobay :) , Ah you won't be able to keep away from it for long love,..................... you've been bitten by the growing bug, so I'm affraid theres no stopping now for you ;) :)
Hello gin4dub:) Ah I just wish that I could give up the "fags" though love :o
I started when I was at at school, must have been about 13 at the time. The thing is smoking wasn't classed so "anti social" back then and it really was the "done thing" to sneak behind the toilets or the bike shed at dinner and break times for a quick smoke:o
Honestly Gin, I have given up so many times but after about 3/4 months I kinda just have one and then drift back into the dammed things again:(
Hello alchemiser :) Oh there's quite a few from the UK on here love ;)
Well it's my first time ever growing Widows, but I have to admit I kinda feel a bit like I'm just following everyone else with them ................. it seems that everyone is growing them :o
Also I must admit I have a few niggling concerns about only growing nine plants, I usaully grow Sensi seeds and they come in packs of sixteen, so I always grow a full pack.
Anyway it's nice to hear from you alchemiser :)
love mand xxx:)

Tempting Fate ................
;) your getting me excited Mand.

Tempting Fate ................
LOL... Hows it growing Mand? Any problems with that old fart and his dog lately?
-
Tempting Fate ................
Thanks mand :smokin:
Being part of the crowd isn't a bad thing when it comes to WW, it's reputation is well deserved imvho, currently have 3 of them tucked away in the veg box.
Hope i'm not been to presumptuous with this but being nearly 50% down on seeds started would have me shaking all over if that was my way of growing, get some more underway asap! it's the best advice i can offer for dealing with them niggling concerns of your's mand.
The best way to never run out is grow too much ;)
Stay stoned, alch.
-
Tempting Fate ................
God mand its great to see another lady grower, hello:thumbsup:
-
Tempting Fate ................
Hello Mobay :) What I actually made a guy excited  .................. oh you mean about the growing
Only kidding Mobay, just me trying a bit of "humor", doesn't quite work on the internet does it :o
Ah well Mobay it was our Mr Latewood who said ages ago that "Cannabis doesn't become addictive untill you start growing it", I reckon those words are so true. I often try to kid myself that I only grow because it is cheaper than buying the stuff, but you know I honestly believe that if all of a sudden money became no object to me (I wish ), I reckon that I would still grow my own .......................... there aren't many things more satisfying than getting wasted on a bit of genuine homegrown :)
Hello Buk :) "Hows it growing" ? .................. is that some grower type term for "Hows it hanging" ;)
Sorry Buk love :o , I'm in one of my "funny" moods to night, had a few Vodies and a little spliffy and still manage to type.
Ah the "old fart", to be honest I've not seen anything off him just lately. You know Buk I can't help but feel a little sad for him. I know he has "snapped" at people before without any provocation. What I understand is he has lived alone for many years now, since his wife left him and I do wonder is it simply lonliness that has made him a bit bitter and twisted.
I hope I never get like that :o.
Tell you what I'll do to prevent it, when my lads leave (if they ever do:rolleyes: ). I'll find myself a "toyboy" to keep me busy :o
Hello alchemiser :) Oh grow too much ................. I honestly wish I could. You know no matter how many grows I do, I never ever seem to be able to say "that's plenty".
Hmmm I thought about germinating a few Skunk seeds to put in there as well but I am trying to keep the numbers down for once and let more light to them;)
Oh by the way I have had a look at "Jack the Ripper", isn't she just a beautifully formed plant, I can just picture her at harvest time :)
Hello calibabe, lovely to hear from you :)
No guessing where you're from with that name ;) . You know I can just picture being on a beach in California (I hope I spelt that right), with the waves crashing and watching Patrick Swayze and Keenau Reeves doing their "Point Break" bit :).
Ah well never mind I suppose I just have to settle for being in freezing middle England, having to wear woolly tight's under my PJ's just to keep warm.
Hmmm yes you do meet a few girls growing on here as well:)
Thankyou ............................................ love mand :) xxx
-
Tempting Fate ................
Hmmm that's the last time I do a late night post :o
Not really an update, more of an introduction ;) . Well there always seems to be one "little runty" in any grow.
I always refer to the runts as she or her because nine times out of ten they do tend to be females.
The first pic is of her with two of her siblings and the second pick is with the rest of the gang. Oh and she also has brown patches coming on her leaves, she really is not the most healthiest of plants :(
Anyway, never mind I always have an habit of siding with the "underdog" so to speak, I'll see how she goes on ;)
love mand xxx:)
-
Tempting Fate ................
Hey Mand,
"How's it Growing"? I like that. Good one Buk. :)
Plants are looking healthy. Keep the updates and pictures coming.
-
Tempting Fate ................
Hello Happy :) , How are you ? .................... well I hope :)
Hmmm they seem reasonably healthy so far, "little runty's" bottom leaves seem to be dying off quite early though ................ sooner than usual.
Oh and I noticed this morning that another one's bottom leaves seem to be starting to go the same way ....................... never mind the new growth seems fine ;)
I'll just post two pics from this morning, that will be the start of day thirteen since sprouting ............................ I'm even keeping count of the days now :o
love mand xxx:)
-
Tempting Fate ................
Mand so when do u think you'll switch to flowering?
-
Tempting Fate ................
Hello Buk :) , I really don't know love, it's going to be a long grow this time ;)
I'm just trying to think when, it's nearly the end of March now so prehaps something like end of May beinging of June possibly ?
I think I've been inducing to soon on the last few grows so I'm going to try and let them get a little more mature this time if everything goes ok :o
love mand xxx:)
-
Tempting Fate ................
 WoW Mand end of May. Yeah I guess it is going to be a long wait but I'm pretty sure you will have great results, are also going to give them more time before you cut them at harvest time? As for me I think I might go and switch in the Middle of April:thumbsup: So are you going to top ur plants this time around?
-
Tempting Fate ................
Hello again Buk :), well I will be pinching them if they survive that long :o
I'm not kidding Buk I really could swear, this growing lark has become a right old pain in the arse this last year:( .
I don't think the runt will last much longer the rusty coloured patches are spreading and there is a little on the leaf of another plant. Anyway I've rasied the light slightly as the leaves have a dry feel to them, I'm wondering if it might be that causing the problem.
Also if things manage to settle down I think that a little re-potting wouldn't do any harm quite soon.
Honestly Buk if I felt more secure doing it I would pack the lamp away and do one great big outdoor grow a year, it's so much easier.
Well love I think I'll just go and have a sulk now :o ;)
love mand xxx:)
-
Tempting Fate ................
Give these plants some hope I'm sure they will pull through. How did u make ur composet this time did u use ur famous reciepe like u always do? Oh Mand I dont like to hear u worrying over the plants I know ur a phenominal grower and can pull this one through. Dont worry so much they are "tough little buggers".;)
-
Tempting Fate ................
Oh mand your poorly little babe :(
The re-potting sounds a really good move, fingers crossed the runt does pull through for you.
Hope it's nothing worse than heat damage, though when you said it had spread to the bottom leaves of another plant i can't help but think 'pathogen'.
After catching up on all your updates i'd say not starting the skunk seeds was a very good more, widows respond very nicely to some training & will fill your growroom nicely.
I'll be watching nervously for your next update of the runt mand :o
PS. Thanks for taking the time to have a look at me JTR, she's been a real pleasure to grow thus far. :p
-
Tempting Fate ................
Hey, Mand. How's it going? :)
The plant's are looking nice -- we can only hope 'the runt' pulls through, but I'm sure it will. So no worries about that.

Tempting Fate ................
Hello Buk :) , I was a bit annoyed yesterday :o
You know it's was one of those days were absolutely nothing goes right ...................... mind you most days tend to be a bit like that
Mind you I seriously would do one big outdoor grow a year if I felt comfortable about security, it really is so much easier and I think it's a more natural way of growing.
It does have it's problems though, the buds tend to be looser due to the limited sunlight but the biggest problem I found was "bud rot", I lost quite a decent percentage of buds due to the wet and damp weather we have around harvest time.
Hmmm just thinking a greenhouse would be good ;)
Hello alchemiser :), I think you've hit the nail on the head so to speak .................... heat ;)
I actually put a thermometer in there for the first time ever because I was concerned about the cold. Anyway I put it at the side of the plants and it was reading around 60 - 70F. However last night I moved the light up and put the thermometer on the plant pots, anyway this morning after the light had been on only for about half an hour I saw it was reading nearly 80F, which means with the light being so close it must have been getting awfully warm under there. So I'm hoping that I have just frazzled them a bit :o
I think they are looking better today and I have also nipped the damaged leaves off, I never keep damaged leaves on I think they just take energy away from the good leaves.
I reckon that the leaves felt far too dry as well, which also pointed to a heat problem.
It's just a matter of waiting now to see if that cures the little problem ;)
Hello Kush :) Ah I think I've just been making silly little mistakes and I'm hoping they go ok now.
To be honest I've had my mind on other things just lately so maybe the growing has been a bit more "half arsed" than it usually is :o
love mand xxx:)

Definitely look to have perked up a bit mand  nice work!
When you repot a pic of the roots on one of them would be interesting!
Hope you like this widow pic, a couple of years old now when growing them big & bushie was our way too :smokin:

Hi, Mand just wanted to tell you those are beautifull
-
Tempting Fate ................
Hello Guys :) Thankyou so much, if ever I need a reference I know where to come for one ;) .
By the way alchemiser, very nice plant, I tell you if I manage them half as good looking as that I'll be more than happy;) ....................... Oh I've added a few root pics, hope there ok.
Update ...................... Well Mothering Sunday and I've been re-potting :o , not to worry though I'm being treated to a meal out tonight, just the kids no boyfriends or girlfriends, just me and the kids ..................... I'm looking forward too it :)
ok I'll just add some pics, they are the plants on day sixteen before re-potting, there's also a comparison pic of little runty with her big brother or sister ????
Then there's a few root pics and then the final outcome of the re-potting.
Thanks guys ......................................... love mand xxx:)

Tempting Fate ................
Mand, is it true that you dont use a fan? How does the plant support the bud without falling over? Im asking this because Im growing another 4 lows, and when the males appear (if any, but Im sure theyll arrive) Im gonna pull them and germ another couple, and with 5 or 6 females I wont have any space for a fan.
Is there a breeze coming in from somewhere in your growroom?

How about a bit of young meat? 18 young enough for ya? :p
Im always randy, plus I can tend to the plants for you. Cant get better than that can ya?

Tempting Fate ................
Hi Mand, Hope you're feeling better. Work makes me sick too...HA!
Have you ever thought of planting in the size of the second pots first? Would be interesting to see what they would look like if they had had more room for the roots. Maybe no difference, but it seems like more room wouldn't have hurt them any. Course who am I to suggest such drival to the Master.
Also, since 'runty' looks to be in bad shape (as compared to the others) why don't you fert more to see if it brings it around? Be like an experiment! The two grows I did the first one (two males) grew like crazy and I was fertilizing them like a crazed first timer! Mega doses and they were some very impressive plants. 2nd grow, I listened to the experts and didn't give them hardly anything. Had major problems with dying leaves and subsequent leaf drop. Since then have learned that they were starving! Just thought 'ol Runty might benefit from some special care. But I know you don't like to mess with them once they're in the dirt!

Tempting Fate ................
Hello Swizzy :), I have actually been thinking of putting a fan in there but I'm affraid that's as far as I get .................... "thinking about it" :o .
The stems always seem to grow thick enough and support is never really a problem. Although at first there is a certain amount of streching, nothing to worry about though as this soon stops and the plants "fill out" more.
The ventilation Swizzy, is basiclly none exsistant in the growroom, it's a small 6 x 6, brick out building with no air bricks or anything. However when the weather is ok I do leave the door open in the daytime.
Hmmm the "Toyboy" idea, well I havent quite made my mind up yet :o ................... ethier a strapping young man with plenty of "energy" ;) or some old codger about on his least legs but with a "shed load of money" ;) :)
Hello Marc :) well love I will try for "little runty" but in all honesty I think she isn't going to "stay the course" :( .
I always find that Marc, in every grow there is always the runt, sometimes they survive and go all the way to harvest but to be honest I don't think this one will.
Infact the whole grow says I'm doing something wrong, and I'm just not sure what  . I know the seeds are ok because of how they started, just like they are supposed too, however there seems to be something "not quite right again", some of the leaves are dis-coloured.
I am hoping I have just "frazzled" them a bit and with time they will go right, but I'm not sure :o
The fact is that I've been having such poor luck in the growroom that I wanted to shift into another one but I'm affraid I couldn't wait and have started in here again. Maybe when the weather has picked up I might still move them.
The pots, I'm affraid I will stick to starting them in the small pots ..................... the reason is really quite simple for this. I start them off in the house and the small pots are fine and can be put out of the way, but there is no way I'm going to have those great big bucket type pots hanging around the house.
Anyway Marc I've never worried about the roots to much as I used to grow in pots actually smaller than the ones I use now :o
love mand xxx :)
Oh by the way Swizzy, I just thought I'd give a fan a try, so I've just been and put one in there ;)
-
Tempting Fate ................
Hey there, Mand. How goes it?
Garden's looking lovely, keep up the great work. I wouldn't be too afraid of the leaf discoloration unless it gets any worse, but identifying the possible problem is always a good thing. Again, though, nothing too serious to worry about -- my own plant started out kind of odd; discolorations, droopy leaves, and a couple deformities. In fact, your plants look better than mine did.
All in all, I say you're doing a wonderful job. Keep it up.
-
Tempting Fate ................
Poor little Runty! :sadcrying
Only thing I'll say about the fan is that it'll dry them out quicker, so you need to watch that. But from everything I've seen Mand you've never had a problem with the plants to warrant worrying about their stems being stronger than they ever have. I had fans in the room going at all times but it was only to control the heat. Keep the air moving around a little. But it was in a far smaller area than what you're using.
As far as another 'problem' with this grow? If you've done well with most other grows, and all of a sudden you're having some problems with the last few, I'd be thinking something in your compost if everything else is the same. Makes no sense why you'd be having problems if everything was exactly the same. Which suggests that something isn't. If the water's the same. Room is the same. Lights are the same. It seems that the only variable might be the dirt they're in. I can see where if you throw just about anything in there that would degrade down that some things probably aren't the ultimate growing substrate for plants. I don't know what those might be unless they were acidic, such as orange peels, grapefruit peels, tomatos, stuff like that. If they're changing the pH of the soil then that could be part of the problem.
Or how about your heater? If that's no doubt sucking oxygen out of the room, which is has to be, and also probably kicking out some fumes, that might be something to look at also.
Just brain stormin' Mand! I for sure don't have all the answers.
You have a nice day.
Marc

Tempting Fate ................
Hello Kush :) , Oh dear love I hope you're right, I'm affraid I'm having one of my "This growing lark is just too much hassel" days to day :o
I'm not at work today but I've so much to do at around the house and with growroom troubles as well, makes me feel like having a smoke and putting my feet up and saying "stuff it all" :o
Ah Marc :), I have wondered about every possible thing that could be causing recent troubles
Anyway since being on these boards I have done one perfectly average grow, when I had the new bulbs, then the next one was bellow average in quantity due to me keep fiddling around with the lights because of droopy leaves. Then the last grow was abandoned due to circumstances outside my control.
Yes Marc everything is the same so they should grow the same ............ but their not, they are being very "awkward little monkeys" :( .
As for the compost, I think it is ok, however when re-potting I did run out, so rather than mess about with a soggy wet compost heap the three at the back are actually in some Levingtons compost from the garden centre, so I'm keeping my eye on any differences.
Oh the fumes from the heater were quite "nasty", if I went in there with the door closed it made me feel quite "dizzy" after a few mins :o . However it's off at the moment because the weather has gone really very mild.
I don't know Marc, last week it was "Brass monkey weather" and this week it's really quite tropical in the growroom
Anyway I'm really "up to the neck in work here today" (just posting whilst having tea), so I'll just upload a few pics of the worst affected plants ;)
Hmmm I never know if it's affected or effected :o
Thanks guys ........................... love mand xxx:)
-
Tempting Fate ................
Hey mand, hmm I cant really help you with the rusty leaves... although I have had something that looked similar on Fiona, and a quick water with some Epsom salts cleared it up. You can get them from any chemist (I dont think a Tesco/Sainsburys etc chemist would do them though) for a couple of quid, and its quite a large tub. They clear up constipation aswell, if that interests you :p :D
Anyway, Ive been thinking about leaving the males in with the female Lows because I wanna stockpile some seeds up... and if I manage to get some males and females outta this grow, would you like some seeds? The potency wont be anything like that of... er... whatever strain it is youre growing now, but its a fun dinky little plant. Also gives you the opportunity to make some crosses if you want, although LR crosses do have a tendency to turn hermie pretty easily...
Anyways, just say if youre interested in some seeds and Ill pop some in the post when they develop. Dont worry about p+p, ittl be all of 50 pence anyway!
Good luck with the grow, although I really dont think you need it... and about the toyboy idea, what about the old man with the camera fetish? :p
-
Tempting Fate ................
Hiya mand :)
Thanks for putting the root pics up, nice camera work very clear :smokin:
Looks to be a nice soil mix you've got there, good healthy looking roots
Just to join in on the nagging :o i wish you would invest in a little fan soon.
Take care mand & keep up the good growing :)
-
Tempting Fate ................
Hey alchemiser, she did invest in a fan due to our persistent nagging!
Next on the list mand... HYDRO!!!
-
Tempting Fate ................
Hi Mand,
I'm doing well. I've been enjoying some very good homegrown lately. :stoned:
Been reading your posts and looking at you pictures. Plants seem to be growing well except for the discoloration in the leaves. I will be interested in seeing how they progress over the next several weeks. If it was because of the light being to close and you've adjusted it the new growth should not show the same effect. This would be good. Hope this is the case.
Cool fan Mand, way to go. ;) You'll be able to use it to keep the light and the tops of your plants cool during flowering.
Since your still using a heater, I'm wondering what the over night temperature is? Come on, you've posted the obvious ones.
Hope your day is going well.
-
Tempting Fate ................
Hello Swizzy :), Firstly thankyou for the very kind offer of seeds but I'm ok for them, I have a couple of new packets of my usual Skunk#1 .................. however I really do appreciate the offer :)
As for the Epsom salts, I might as well give them a go if there isn't any improvment soon. Don't need them for constipation though, there's no problem there ;)
Hello alchemiser :) The pics ................ I took them . I'm very hit and miss when it comes to taking photo's, I delete more than I keep I'm affraid :o
The compost was prehaps a little damper than I would have liked, but it has been a struggle to dry it out with all the rain we have been having. Also I ran short and three of the pots have got a bit of Levingtons from the garden centre in them, mind you that is a good thing really because I have two types of compost and the "rusty" problem is on plants in all pots, so I can prehaps eliminate compost deficancies ?.
Hello Happy :), well there on day nineteen (I think), so the growth is about average, apart from "little runty" ............. but there's always a runt in every grow :o
At first I thought they were just "frazzled" but like you say that wouldn't continue on to new growth once the heat problem had been addressed ...................... to be honest "Happy" I'm absolutely "stumped", I haven't a clue what's wrong  . I even had a look in my little book and that identified a possible cause as "Potassium" deficancy, but I just find that difficult to believe because everything is the same as usual and I have never had this type of problem before :o
The temperature, well it's running about 75f in the day and when the light is off I think it tends to drop to around the mid 60's at night, depending how cold the weather is outside.
I'll just post some pics from this morning (day nineteen) ...................... any help or suggestions as to what is causing the leaf discoloration is very wellcome because I really haven't got a clue ....................... I've been "racking my brains" and I am "totally stumped":o
Oh, the last pic is "little runty", she is still hanging on but struggling :(
love mand xxx:)

Tempting Fate ................
Hey Mand. How's it going today?
Your plants look lovely, and the discolorations are nothing to kill yourself over just yet. They could probably be attributed to a magnesium deficiency as Swizzy stated, so some Epsom salt should do the trick. If the leaves start to curl in wards -- maybe twist at the ends -- it's probably just that. Just keep a close eye on them like you've been doing, every thing's going great.
-
Tempting Fate ................
Ok Mand here's the scoop. I think your soil could be suspect. I know you said that you had used some store bought soil for at least 2 plants. How are they doing? Do they show the same discoloration? If not, I would be looking at my compost heap and wondering what was going on.
I use a mixture of a "SuperSoil"+perlite+vermiculite and have always had good results. I use the same mixture with all my house plants. I drains well and is and lets air into the roots well too. I've never been around compost so I don't know what the consistency of it would be like.
As far as water, I just use tap water.
I suppose if I were having a consistant problem I would have to have all of that checked.
Looking at one of your plants with 3 sets of leaves, 2 of the sets have the brown marks on them. The new set doesn't yet and hopefully won't. The plants look healthy, big leaves, ridge stems. There still pretty young.
Mand you might have to get all HighTech on us to figure this one out. I wouldn't put away your thermometer and fan just yet. ;)
If the temperature isn't dropping below the 60's over night, your good there too.
I hope some of this helps.

Tempting Fate ................
Hello Kush, Happy :) ............ well I've made one last attept to save the little "buggers" :o http://boards.cannabis.com/showthread.php?t=58536
It was three plants in different compost "Happy" and I'm affraid to say that all have been affected :(
To be honest I think it's something to do with the growroom, I didn't disinfect it out before this grow :o ......................... I am of the mind that Zandor hit upon something when he mentioned "possible a fungus." ;)
I also think that I'm going to lose this grow, the new growth is coming on but within a short space of time the tips start turnig brown and it just keeps spreading ;)
The only thing I can do at the moment is allow further growth and see what happens. However there on probation now and if there is no inprovement within the next few weeks, I'll abandon yet another grow
I'm definately moving the growrooms for the next one ;)
