Shov Winter 2013-2014 Sativa Grow
I'm reading some kick ass genetics here my friend! I'm drooling on my touch screen! Was talking to a friend last night who said he had to be scraped off the floor after smoking chem D. last week. On my last birthday, Ak-47 body slamed me. I'm confused on Mazar-I-Sharif. Some seed banks list in their sativa section, & others as indica. It taste like indica. The first time I smoked it, at first it seemed an up high, but then I stood up, realised I over indulged, sat back down & said hell I'm not cooking dinner. Where's the damned Reese cups!?!? I love bubblegum & blueberry. I've yet to try cheese but I want to. Do you know if its indica or sativa dominant? Someone told me it grows quite large.
---- I seem to be the only one who pollen swaps. You ever done this? :) ~~~ PEACE! ~~~

I've no experience with Cheese. The only pollinating I do is open or selective to a single branch. I've not collected and saved or shared pollen but once for my B-I-L to cross his female Purps with my male Bubblegum x Blueberry. I have a decent collection of seeds to choose from and I have some offers for a few premium cuts (Hells Angels OG, Bubba Kush, Katsu) that I may get around to growing one day. But I'm pretty pleased with the stable I have at this point.
Yes, the Mazar-i-Sharif is two totally different strains. Crazy. I have grown the indica and it's very nice. The sativa is supposed to be exceptional. It's not on my 'to do' list though.
Best of luck with the seed shopping.

OK, back to work...
Plants are doing very well. Mascot wasp is still there. I've culled one Mango Haze male, most of the others are female. One that is very stretchy I will cull as soon as it shows sex, either way. Plenty of MH females though. Well, here's the pics from last night which is really the first day of week four.

Looking good there Shovel! Indoor-Outdoor, you're a hard person to keep up with haha.

Shov Winter 2013-2014 Sativa Grow
Hey Shovel, the ladies are looking very healthy! When you pull the male plants, do you save them for pollinating and breeding? Or trash them? In some of the earlier posts of this thread it sounded like you have some experience working closely with the breeders and may have some experience.

Shov Winter 2013-2014 Sativa Grow
That Z11xNH is REALLY pretty! I like stocky indica dominates, they fit nicely indoors, & camouflage easier outdoors, plus they kick my butt! I will have to top, bend, & grossly manipulate my grow to keep them out of the lights, so I'm aiming for something with as little stretch as possible. For all my searching, it still reads like aurora indica. There has to be a way for me to post pics from this cell ph, but I can't find it. I have some seedling pics I'd really like to share. So between indoor/outdoor, how many harvests do you have per year?
~~~ PEACE! ~~~ :)
Thanks for the kind comments, Doog, Pushit and Catbuds.
The only pollinating I do is open or selective to a single branch. I've not collected and saved or shared pollen but once for my B-I-L to cross his female Purps with my male Bubblegum x Blueberry. So I trash males. I trash females too when I start as I usually start more seed than needed. Unfortunately I have no one to give plants to that will grow them indoors. I trash most trim (saved it this recent outdoor harvest though), I trash roaches. I'm wasteful in that regard. Sorry
Harvests a year? Often two indoors and sometimes one outdoor. Much more product than I ever need for myself. I smoke very little usually. I gift quite a lot. What I don't care for is when I let someone have seed or plants and ask for a sample of the product or at least a smoke report and I hardly ever (one out of fifty or so) get the feed-back. Many times I know the herb is good - excellent as I grow it out myself.
Well that's just rude not to share with the one who gave you the plants/seeds! I have a friend who's living situation prevents him from growing. He gives me seeds, I give him half the harvest. These are always outdoor grows, since its usually unknown genetics & therefore no idea how much stretch they may have while budding. Another friend found herself rolling in money moved to far away to see often. She gets top of the line smoke & saves me the occasional seeds she finds. I always try to give her some. If she can get down here while I still have some, she'll smoke with me, but when I try to give her some to take with her, she tells me you grew, its yours, keep it. Sorry Shovel, but you have some rude, ungrateful friends.
---- I have the same # of harvests as you, but with my location/house situation, much smaller grows. Once this house is renovated, I plan to have a large grow room. I have 10' ceilings, so no size limits!
---- Love the pics you post of your pretty girls! :) ~~~ PEACE! ~~~
Well shiiiiz if you can get plants to the Midwest I'll gladly take them if you need to give them away lol
Hated to do this but I had to top five of the MH as they are too stretchy. I don't usually top in flower but these went from seedling to flower so I didn't get to manage the stretch. It appears that all the rest of these plants are females. 24 seedlings, three males.
Shov Winter 2013-2014 Sativa Grow
OUCH! Been there, done that, HATE that..... but it happens. Anticipaipating doing that a lot with my height limitations. Sounds like a strain best saved for the great outdoors. Something that worked for me to manage stretch in a tall sativa I once had..... Kept cool lighting (MH/coolwhite fluorescent side lighting) for the first 2-3 wks of flowering. Keeping cool white fluo, switched to warm lighting (HPS) for 2 wks, after that switched out the cool fluor tubes for warm white. Lengthed budding time about a week, but almost 50% less stretch. Too much trouble, no more tall girls for me after that. Worth the effort? Depends on how much you like the strain. :) ~~~ PEACE! ~~~
Top up bags with soil and trim lower branches and bud sites. Total (20) plants. (9) Mango Haze, (6) Z11 x Neville's Haze and (5) Z11 sativa x Neville's Haze. One Z11 sativa x NH had one single ball on her with all the developing buds. I trimmed it off, marked the plant and put it where I can keep an eye on it.
Update
I kept an eye on the hermie and it put out more male stamen so it's gone. The other four plants of that strain (Z11 sativa x NH) all show calyx forming into seed! There were no male stamen that opened so I don't know how this is happening. I was tempted to shit can all these plants but I decided to wait and see how things look in another couple of weeks. If I need the space I'll cull them out.
photos later...
Shov Winter 2013-2014 Sativa Grow
Today is the start of week six. I trimmed the lower branches on the Mango Haze. Just about all the MH are topped and some are tied over. They are super stretchy. The Neville's Haze hybrids are staying much shorter than the MH. One Z11 x NH is sticky and smelling good.
-
Shov Winter 2013-2014 Sativa Grow
Been looking at pics in seed banks & other forums several hours today. MH looks to always be really stretchy indoors, but fills in & covers the stem well outdoors, gets really tall & stands up screaming LOOK AT ME! Not the best trait for stealth, but the description of the flavor & high would make it hard to resist. So will you be trying some MH outdoors next season? (Topped & tied down of course, you're good at that!)
---- Ahhh, think of me when you you take that first hit from the MH. I know it will be good! :) :) :)
-
Shov Winter 2013-2014 Sativa Grow
no outdoor sativas here, Cat. MH would not finish well. I"m pleased with the European Outdoor strain and I will continue to grow that next outdoor season along with one or two other strains.
-
Shov Winter 2013-2014 Sativa Grow
Change of plans. The Z11 x NH were pretty much all seeded. Where were these stamen coming from? I look closely and the stamen are in among the calyxes. Decision was made to scrap all them hermie prone strains and finish out the grow with just the nine Mango Haze. Yut. Still plenty plants to grow out.
-
Shov Winter 2013-2014 Sativa Grow
So I transplanted the nine MH from3 gallon bags into 5-6 gallon pails. I did lose some root material during some transplants but all in all I believe it will end up for the better, yes.
Hey shov,
Just finished reading your log. Very informative. A couple questions. The soil ammndments(which u previously listed) are mixed in globally? For additionally feeding just aerated compost teas?
I think your MH plants look great. Seems u made a smart call with the others.
I'm following along.
-
Shov Winter 2013-2014 Sativa Grow
Also in regards to your teas:
Would u mind posting your specific recipe?
Variations/modifications for specific stages of plants life?
-
Shov Winter 2013-2014 Sativa Grow
teas I use are in four gallon batches. I use different Espoma organic products with biology, Age Old Bloom liquid, Meta-K, Plant Success mycorizzhae and wildlife grade molasses. >70ยบ F for two days with air stones. I stir it up and apply straight up and for foliar I cut 8:1.
and yes, this is how I apply the organic nutrients. Once in a while a little treat like bat guano or something but basically the same old shit.
-
Shov Winter 2013-2014 Sativa Grow
Thanks for the info. Do u see improvement from foliar feeding? In quality? Yield?
Shov Winter 2013-2014 Sativa Grow
Wasn't thinking about how far north you are from me. Thats a shame, I know how much you like sativas. I think anyone would be pleased with those Europeans! Awesome early trichromes! Really like your tea (did leave an after taste tho! LOL!) Now that I'm fat, old & gimpy, I've found liquid organics at my fav grow store that has everything I used in my teas/composts + some. Wish I could come scoop you up & take you there with me sometime, you'd love it! Love your pics, keep 'em coming! You're a ray of sunshine in a cold, dark world! :) :) :)
I like indoor, outdoor, back door, sidedoor. I like indica, sativa, hybrid, africanica, afghanisanica, new world, old world, small world. All my favorites.
Bloom Week Six
Nine Mango Haze. I just fed them a compost tea with Age Old Bloom, Biotone, Meta-K, molasses, mycorizzhae Excelite and Maxi-Grow. Shut off one of two 400 watt hps, still have 216 watt T5HO on one side. The nine buckets just fit under the one HPS for good light penetration at this time.
Shov Winter 2013-2014 Sativa Grow
I like the way you think! So you've never had a 'buddy' you didn't like! Is your first grow of MH? Was curious about the flavor. A lot of blueberries develope most of their flavor towards the end of the cure. Was wondering if the same was true for the MH, & if tasted like mangos. I'm into the flavor as much as the high, sometimes even more so. When the time comes, I'm going to have a hard time waiting for the cure! :) :) :)
-
Shov Winter 2013-2014 Sativa Grow
Yes, my first grow of this strain.
I read that the original hybrid did have some mango scent or flavor, whatever but it's not a strong trait of the strain. It's all about the buzz. It's like Super Silver Haze but betterer.
-
Shov Winter 2013-2014 Sativa Grow
Now I just have to clean house... toss out about 500 seeds of my hermie prone Z11 x Neville's Haze crosses. I gave them a couple of runs just to see if the hermies were stress induced. Nope. But no worries, I still have five other hybrids from Neville's Haze males crossed with G13 x Nor Cal Daddy's Girl, Super Silver Haze x Blueberry, Super Silver Haze and some of these back-crossed to Neville's Haze again. When I finish this run of Mango Haze I'll think about growing the next sativa crop using these hybrids.
Shov,
Have u heard of a product called nature's big bud?
I believe it's just castings yucca and some trace minerals.
An experienced organic farmer gave me this info.
Simplify and standarize my tea's. 1 gal pure water, 10 drops calmag, 1 teaspoon Big Bud, and some fresh EWC
What do you think?
