PS......or online perhaps?
im trying to stay away from buying online as long as possible, i've heard of some businesses reporting to the police when somebody buys a large hydro or lighting system.
Well check out a good pet store.....tell them you have a 100 gallon tank or something.......how about ordering online from a pet store?
Just got my rubbermaid,it holds 18 gal, also got 2 24'' "cool white" fluoros, got home to find out i need 18'',, going back out to exchange and get a pump, some hose, and airstones.
Did you ever get your calmag and stabilize your pH? That's STILL the problem!
You probably have only a couple days, a week tops, before those plants die if you don't do something fast. Not only do you need the Ca in distilled (ir even distilled + tap) water, but coco fibre is a known calcium scavenger, and I just noticed you are using coco liners in your pots. I never use those liners, and that's one of the reasons- the other being introduction of extraneous organic matter into what is a perfectly serviceable hydroton system. Kinda defeats part of the purpose. Also, what is the grainy whitish stuff in the liners?
The liners came with the hydroton, net pots, and pump that i got in my hydroponics. I didnt kno there were cocoa liners, let alone the white stuff in it, sorry i couldn't tell you. Thanks for the input, how do u suggest i go about taking those out now that the roots have grow through them? or can I.
By mixing distilled and tap what i hope i did fix the cal/mag problem. Ph is as stable as it will get until i can put the hydroton, that the plants are in, through a water and bleach mix.
Got my dwc up! I have a 20-60 gallon pump along with a 10'' airstone. Got 2 "cool white" bulbs to replace my ultra-violet ones.
Don't pull the nets out, they will damage the roots.
You didn't fix the Ca problem unless your tap water happens to have twice the Calcium and trace minerals needed... unlikely. YOU NEED CALMAG. I promise!
I'm not sure how bleach will stabilize your pH? Bleach is a sodium compound, very very dangerous to plants at even relatively low concentrations. It would also RAISE the pH, and hydroton tends to drift UP.
The correct way to stabilize the pH of your system (since you now have plants in it and have to do the whole thing), is to get a pH up/down/indicator kit and just keep checking the res every ~12 hours or so and adjusting the pH until it is completely stable, with all the stuff in the system running (air stone/pump/other).
Here's some reading on the concept of pH:
pH - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hope that helps. There's no getting around basic hydro techniques, and doing daily pH checks, and, yes, adjustments too if you have to, is one of them. Using CalMag with a distilled water source is another. Jsut mixing in some more tap water isn't going to solve an existing calcium deficiency; in fact, I'd personally go so far as to foliar feed a weak solution of the stuff since you are already in the fix-or-die stage or the deficiency. But still add it to the res.
Do Weedhound's troubleshooting method:
Start with your source water. The EC should be very low.
Add your CalMag until EC reads 300ppm. This gives you the 'ideal' mock tap water that plants like in hydro.
Then add your one part grow or bloom until you reach 600 ppm.
Check and adjust your pH to right around 6.0.
Check back in a day or so for signs that you need to raise or lower your main fertilizer.
This is pretty much a basic black-beans-n-rice diet for your plants. It's the minimum they need to be happy in hydro.
I like the DWC tub......you'll need more airstones asap......but like Stinky I'm really not sure where the bleach part fits in.........
I thought i had read some where that you should soak your hydroton with a mix of light bleach water. i might be mistaking. I know bleach is bad for you plants, which is why i said i would have to wait to treat the hydroton.
got more airstones. When should i switch mediums? flower time?

When are you going to turn them? I ask because it would be a LOT better if you sexed them before moving them over to their new home and before all their roots grow together.
I dont know really, what your opinion? the 2 plants on the right are 3 1/2 weeks old...while the biggest one on the left, which is suppose to be northern lights, is at 2 1/2 weeks old.
wow...short one i guess......
I think i might pull the shortest one on the right, maybe even the middle one, they're both at 4 weeks old while the 1st on the left is at 3 weeks. kinda of thinking i might be wasting my time with these plants.
Krimet don't give up on them yet. If you think they are getting better give them a bit more time. I've had some plants that I swore weren't worth a plugged nickel and they turned out to be some nice plants at the end so you never know with these "weeds" once you get dialed in. ;)
Made a trip to the hydro store. got some reflective material, cal/mag plus, liquid karma, and a ph up and down kit. 85$
I hope it pays off in the end.
Good! Now go GET THOSE PLANTS!! Sic em! :D
They really look to me like they are starting to get there. Are you using a zyme product or some hydrogen peroxide?
I just went back over page one and looked at the photos.....they are definitely better....give them a week before turning. I notice you have all three of them next to each other in the smaller res.....how about trying to spread them out to keep potential root troubles at bay.
Speaking of....how long ARE your roots now? They need to be hanging somewhat in the water for DWC to work. Are yourr long enough for the larger tub?
Roots have definitely gotten long enough for large tub. I wanna wait and sex them first like you said. They're not near big enough yet. I haven't been using hydrogen peroxide, I don't use any zyme product. What's is it?

tell me thats not a big upgrade :p
You can use hydrogen peroxide to help keep your roots in healthy condition and assist in keeping root rot at bay. The other option (which is better for your plants but more expensive as well....) is using a zyme product like Sensizym, Cannazym which helps keep your roots healthy. Zyme products can also assist with keeping the ph stable in your res as well.
PS....Most zyme products are enzymes so can't be mixed with Hydrogen peroxide.t's one or the other generally.
You need more light for those plants.....the stuff you are using is not doing it for branching and bushiness while growing.
PS.....For standard H2o2 (store bought....3%) i use 2 tsp per gallon every other day.
I've kinda ran outta money, cant get more for a few weeks either. By then, i will need my 400w hps. Is it fine to keep these 3 lights until then? Any tips on where i should put the 3rd?
Hope this will due for my veg box.

Whats everyones thoughts on the 100$ 400w hps lights from htgsupply.com? I was told by some1 whos been in hydro for 20 years that it would cost the company more then 100$ to make it, let alone sell it for that price. She told me it was to good to be true.
Never heard of the place.
Hey Krimet....the website looked ok to me. That's just my opinion.....not my $100 like it is yours. But if I WERE going to buy it I'd call them on the phone. They look pretty legit I think..
Can you use the same light for vegging? OR are you going to have two seperate grow areas? If not......grab an mh conversion bulb (if you have the $$)for vegging.
I spent $170 for the 400 watt remote ballast, reflector, HPS lamp and MH conv lamp. I see the $95 unit and I'd rather go with the remote ballast than the ballast in the hood. If the ballast is new and not referbished then it is a great deal. The plants will love it. Also, my MH failed and they are pretty good about the one year warrantee on the lamps. I have one coming from UPS today. The ballast has a three year warrantee. I'd buy again from them, they have great prices and ship right out quick.
shov
Shov do you think the hood would get too hot for a small space?
Thanks shov! That hood is a deal tho, I can't find anything else remotely close to its price, and I am so broke right now. I will split my grow area into 2 have have a veg and flower box. Plants love the new solution with cal/mag and liquid karma, they're coming back very fast. Pics later tonight.
Plants are lookin a lot better dude.. I bet your happy you didnt pull them now?
Just stick in there and you will produce some nice bud..
Patients is the key...
Good luck with the rest of you grow:thumbsup:
Hell yeah I am. Thanks for the reinsurance smokey.
I've got a bit of a heat problem now, it was getting close to 83 degrees. Any tips on how to fix this cheaply, haha. I had 1 fan on it, put another in the closet. I do not have the money for ventilation.
83 isn't bad....85 I'd really start to frown. Once you add the new lighting you WILL need some way to cool it......the light will put off some heat itself.
that 83 was takin from the wall right next to the lights, I know under those lights it's another 2-4 degrees, even if they're weak fluoro's
starting to frown.....
Krimet you can only do the best you can so even if things aren't perfect lots of time plants do just fine. Don't stress over stuff that hasn't happened yet. Just plan ahead the best you can.
Update - growing a lot.
