SEXUAL MATURITY!!! Oh yay.
So now, with side growth really taking off, and the first of the plants showing alternating nodes, it is time to 'CLONE FOR SEX'.
Here's some pics!
1- The girls before their haircuts
2- The girls lined up in order of vigor. What I've done is roughly arrange them from most pathetic to most brilliant.
3- A pair of BOG BlueMoonRocks who are along for the ride
4- The same pair of BMRs, showing topped vs. untopped growth patterns. The untopped one was a mistake; I meant to do them all at the same time but it's good to show anyway.
5- Now I get a bunch of tags together labelled 'DD 1- 11' that I will attach to plants with the '1' tag going on the lamest one and the '11' tag going on the most vigorous. This way, when I finally get them sexed, I will take the highest-number male and a couple of the highest-number females for my parent plants. It's fuzzy, but the little circle on each tag means that the plant has not yet been sexed, and when I do learn sex, I'll add the appropriate symbol.

Shown is a plant that I consider ready to clone.
1- Getting the hormone ready. Dip-N-Grow is fungicidal, and even mixed in this nasty ass test tube it roXors
2- The new growth on a plant that has been topped. This is where we take the cuts.
3- The pair of new shoots, including a node, slit right down the middle to make 2 clones... you only run into this situation in a young plant that has only recently gone alternating, and then, only when you are taking the whole top for clones.
4- They quickly go sit in the test tube of hormone
5- Meanwhile, while they are soaking up the juice, you take your rapidrooter and plunge the xacto blade deep into the bottom of it. The hole they come from the factory with is way too big for cannabis, and to avoid direct air contact with the cut part of the stem, and good contact with the medium, a simple slit works better. Then, you can use the RR free-standing with good air flow around the base, meaning faster rooting with less chance of rot.
-
Donkey Dick and VT local IBL Indoor/Outdoor 2008
1- The clone as it looks in the RR
2- The clone with the leaves cut down to less than 1" each to minimize water loss through transpiration
3- What's left of the donor
4- Closeup of cut site showing hollow stem- this is a place for disease to enter and we must stabilize it somehow
5- Solution, cut a bit of a plastic toothpick to make a plug
-
Donkey Dick and VT local IBL Indoor/Outdoor 2008
1- Moms after their haircuts- a couple I considered to be too small to clone, but they are the low-number ones anyway and will be put into flower without backing up a mother to save since I don't consider them good examples of the strain.
2- The clones in their tray. They will get misted with wilt-pruf and a wet dome will go over them. That's it. The next time I will touch them is 3 days later when I will mist them with SMC leaf wash (to avoid fungal infection) and re-wet the inside of the dome
3- Stuff that's rooting in the corner lol.. magical stacking prop domes!! There's enough ambient light in the room to let them do their thing, even stacked, as long as I pull them away from the wall.

Donkey Dick and VT local IBL Indoor/Outdoor 2008
Humm, very intresting toothpick solution. I'll have to try that one of these days. Along with the cuting of the leaves down to 1".
Your always so helpfull.
-
Donkey Dick and VT local IBL Indoor/Outdoor 2008
Thank you! :D
The reason the leaves get chopped is to reduce both surface area from which they can lose moisture, reduce rate of photosynthesis to slow down the whole metabolism while they go through the shock of being cut from the plant (the way patients with very severe injuries or illnesses are sometimes put into a chemically-induced coma to increase their chance of survival), and reduce weight dragging them down- they won't actually wilt nearly as easily.

In post #49... I was wondering exactly what that lighter says upon it
Do you (word I can't make out) want a pink lighter
-
Donkey Dick and VT local IBL Indoor/Outdoor 2008
"Think about it... do you REALLY want a pink lighter?"
This to prevent lighter theft. It backfires though... I recently found the other one that said "It's for smokin' not for stealin' " between the cushions on my buddy's sofa... and I KNOW I didn't leave it there! lol

Nice documentation on this one stinky, as usual.

"It takes brains and balls to succeed in life. Some have way too much of one and not enough of the other!"
You know, it's a funny thing. Some of my friends have accused me of this... lol
Hey well as for the documentation, that's the main point. I'm glad SOMEONE appreciates it...
On the record:
I'm a little miffed at one of the people who gave 'thumbs down' on this thread after all the work I'm putting into making it clear and educational... give me a bad 'review', at least have the courage to say it to my FACE. This site is about learning and criticism should be CONSTRUCTIVE, not negativity for its own sake. I'm sorry that the relationships forum doesn't exist any more... but there's gotta be a better home for ya than my damn grow log.
Anyway, back to the show. Here's the new Vermont kids in their new homes. You can't see them yet... they haven't emerged in this pic, but it shows my seedling starting setup. The soil appears very wet because I've just given the seedling mix a heavy watering before letting it rest an hour or so, poking holes, and placing the seeds in it. That mix is appropriate for seedlings, as it is very fine textured and free of added fertilizer.

hey stinky when putting your clones outside are you gonna leave them in pots or put them directly into the ground and are you gonna use the promix outside too and if so, how much bat guano do you think you will add? this is gonna be a very informaive grow log for me as i will try to copy you as best i can. lol
-
Donkey Dick and VT local IBL Indoor/Outdoor 2008
I'm actually still thinking about some of those things myself.
The plan right now is to use compost and vermiculite dug into the ground where I intend to plant, and add a bit of bat guano while I'm at it. I'll put the plants directly in the ground, and if they are in jiffy pots, I'll get the pots good and wet and poke them full of holes first.
I PROMISE there are better outdoor growers to copy than myself; this is my first serious outdoor attempt... lol! I know how to grow good hot peppers though... pot can't be TOO hard! :D

Donkey Dick and VT local IBL Indoor/Outdoor 2008
oooh yeah...put em in the ground, let the girls go!!!!!!heh

You DO realize that New England produces among the best weed in the world, right? We've been spoiled rotten since the time of the early Skunks... then the Chems came along... May I venture to say that NE growers and breeders have always represented us VERY well? :D

Yes i do, and I'm pleased by it each time i smoke. But i just wanted to say that it gives me a nice feeling inside to see the people working hard to grow marijuana in VT.

Hey stinky nice grow log! I was curious why you chose not to use Advanced nutrients when you stated that it was designed speciffically to be used with promix? I had never heard that before but it makes sense because that's what a friend of mines grows with, promix and sunshine #4 also. And it's some real good shit, both indoor and outdoor. Anyways keep up the good work:D

Good question on the AN; I had a CRAPLOAD of old fertilizer (Cornucopia, PowerPlant/PowerFlower, and others) laying around, and since I'm not pressed for time here (it IS only March after all), I'm not really going after that super aggressive feeding schedule on these plants...
That being said, I've got other stuff going, and as soon as I can afford to buy the entire 'kit'- which I can get for around $400- I'll be making the switch. I just don't have the cash right now to spend much on my own needs, let alone plant food, lol! Gotta love the price of heating fuel... Thanks, Cheney Cartel! Assholes.
Give me a month and see where I'm at after my tax return comes back. By then I will be ready to do a proper single-strain SOG in ProMix and actually be able to use the AN line the way it was intended.

Great log so far, Stinky! The two posts detailing your cloning methods should be a sticky all to themselves. Dunno why anyone would give you a thumbs-down on this thread, though. I threw in a thumbs-up a few days ago, and I'm sure there'll be plenty more to come.
Looking forward to seeing how things go for ya outdoors!

Looking good Stinky, glad to see you are going to do an outdoor grow. Did you ever build the green house you wanted to build last spring, and if so will you be useing it at all for this little venture?:weedpoke:

I might toss a couple out early if I find a great spot, or give some to a friend.

Nope, ran out of time last year but this year I've got a more reasonable schedule and will be driving recieving poles for a hoophouse as soon as the ground is soft enough to take them. Did you ever do yours? I remember talking about it. I am personally uncomfortable with the idea of growing in a greenhouse for security reasons but we'll see how I feel about it later in the summer. Nice to see you stop by again!

Hi Stinky. Just to let you know I am a NOOB up in Canada and you are my new Idol! NO WAY should you get a thumbs down. Just been lurking for a while but have my own log here: (hope it is okay to post a link, please remove if it is not) Vancouver Seed Bank :: Cannabis Cultivation, Indoors & Outdoors :: New to growing inside, now VERY confused!!!
Just wanted to tell you I have learned so very much from following your logs. I have done the gange for over 35 yrs and have grown outside for 2, now following your inspiration for inside. Baby steps now, but will follow this closely. AND A BIG BIG THUMBS UP TO THE STINKSTER! Now will try and do that! Keep the faith, fair lady! From a fellow MJ lady, up in the snow country! LOL!
Life,
j-angel
Okay, told you I was a NOOB! Here we go! LOL!

All right!
J-angel, welcome to the boards! It's always good to see the ladies repping hard
I don't have any fresh photos to share since nothing much has happened in the last week except a 7 hour power outage (wind storm) and several shorter ones (who the fuck knows), that kicked my timers back over 12 hours (yes yes I know time to go digi) and a flood that sent a major feeder brook of the local stream right through my flower room, living room, and kicthen. I didn't notice the 2 inches of water on the LR floor until I heard some strange splashing noises and realized the dogs were wrestling IN THE WATER in the other room... then walked around back, opened the woodshed door, and let a WATERFALL pour over the sill and into the house... not much going on really...
Trust me, if I'd had my camera battery charged there would be PLENTY to see.
As it is, I can show you a pic of a pile of wet towels and socks... anyone interested? :D

As for the rest...
Towels and socks are already on the way to the laundromat- I plan to wash them in the machine right under the sign that says "No Horse Blankets"... lol the amount of dog hair coming off them... I actually feel a little guilty lol.
The deepest indoor water was 2" on top of the carpet and carpet pad, in a 12x20 living room... But the deepest OUTDOOR was in the attached woodshed, which is sunk into a hillside and built of dry-stone, was enough that firewood was floating around.
Okay update on the plants.
The clones are still rooting, and there is no wilt. I misted the dome once at clipping, once on Wednesday, and once on Saturday. They appear perky and that they will all make it.
Meanwhile, I went through and re-evaluated the numbered mothers. A couple moved up in the standings over the week since clones were taken (= second pinch equivalent). Any that appeared better or worse than their current number indicated got a quick writeup on the back of the number tag of why I thought they were better or worse. This will help choose my final mother, and also choose which plant in the seed patch I will save seeds from.
In one week I will sex the plants. When all the clones have rooted and proven that they will survive outside the dome, I will put the mothers into flower.
Why flower the mothers, not the clones?
This is because I don't really have the space to keep large plants, and since my outdoor date is still months away, I'd prefer to just flower off the moms and pick a 'keeper' male right away, and maybe even do an indoor line seed run with the best indoor performers. Then I'll save the best male and females in smaller form in quart pots until it's time to start making spring clones.

Flood? Sounds bad.....hope everything is ok.
You;d need about 75 short haired dogs like yours to get noticed in the horse blanket game....:D Long haired dogs.....maybe 35-ish. ;)
-
Donkey Dick and VT local IBL Indoor/Outdoor 2008
i love the log stinky. very informative.
i hope you got all your problems fixed and dried
-
Donkey Dick and VT local IBL Indoor/Outdoor 2008
lol! My dog sheds outrageously and my neighbor has a Shepherd who is in the middle of his spring shed... yeeps.
As for the flooding, it's just going to be a matter of drying the floors at this point... I keep all my ballasts up on milk crates, and hang outlets on extension cords or whatever up at least a foot off the floor by cup-hooks screwed into the wall.
And now we see why!
Edit: Ebbdro, I notice you haven't even started a thread in hydro yet... Go start a thread... then people will help you...

I did but it did'nt work out the way I planned and actually did more damage than good in the long run. This is a good thread! I would definately throw a few outside through out the summer just to see at what point it helps or hurts. Anyways, keep up the good work!
Oh, and really sorry to hear about your flood. And the same shit happened here with the wind. New England sux!
-

Nothing but carpets was damaged. Yeah, leaf blowers are good for that but I'm just going to dry out the carpeting with the fans I've already got and plan for future wet-weather events.
