How I think drugs could be legal
I agree, PatrickHenry- it's relatively akin to having roadside farmer stands, except with a psychoactive substance.
There should NEVER be any law against selling your own stuff. It'd be against all logic, because if that were so, the government would impend all types of taxes on cannabis, and would be screwing you royally, thus creating another type of black market.
Legalize it all, and let people make their own decisions about what they put in their bodies.

Well since it would be such a huge market, it has to be regulated properly. If not, a single dealer would be able to put pharmacies out of business.

We have a name for that, it's called capitalism. :) That's exactly the point. Do you want the pharmacies charging you a ridiculous amount of money for something you can grow yourself, or that GardenKnowm or one of the other growers here can grow better???

I like the idea of packing restrictions--stupid as sin laws are, they would be necessary for anything of this sort to pass in America (esp. during the conservative upswing in recent decades).
I had a similar idea once. Cops bust you for open beer--they bust you for open pot. So the pot could come in sealed (not zipped, actually sealed) bags from the vendors that would (in all likeliness) be the medium you get it from if it were legal. This would also be a way to prove you werent dealing with the black market.
 Cop: You been smokin that bag boy?
:rastasmoke: No, sir, it's unopened.

No, thats not what I want but it is a realistic view. Just because we live in a capitalistic country does not mean all economics and markets are free.

I don't want something just because it's realistic, I want something because it's right!
However, you're right that it's likely going to be governed in such a way, but such a way is not ideal.
I'm an idealist I suppose, an idealist who wants freedom!

Well, Im no economist, but when pharmacies start failing widely (and keep in mind that medicine is a popular and rapidly growing field) I believe that it will have severe negative effects.
Its just my perspective in order to prevent another economic depression if marijuana was ever legalised. Maybe after a gradual shift, people would be able to grow their own plans, but if marijuana was just legalised with very few restrictions, it would be catastrophic on the economy.

In 1660 tobacco was illegal, but as some European kings realized they could profit largely from it. It slowly became more and more acceptable.

Prior to his demise Miltron Friedman was notorious for his calls for the legalization and the absolute hands off approach the government must take toward drugs. Milton Friedman is also arguably the most respected economist of all time.
