RIP James Brown.
Legendary Singer James Brown, The 'Godfather Of Soul,' Dies At 73
An agent for James Brown says the singer known as the "Godfather of Soul" has died. He was 73. The agent -- Frank Kopsidas -- reported yesterday that Brown was admitted to a hospital in Atlanta, suffering from pneumonia. The agent says Brown passed away at about 1:45 a-m this morning and that the cause of death is still uncertain. As he put it, "We really don't know at this point what he died of." The agent said Brown's family is now being notified of his death.
Brown was scheduled to perform at least three shows this week alone. Earlier, his agent announced two of those shows were being canceled because of his hospitalization -- but that Brown was expecting to perform this weekend. Brown's longevity and his willingness to keep performing earned him the unofficial title: "The hardest-working man in show business."
Along with Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and a handful of others, he was one of the major musical influences of the past 50 years. At least one generation idolized him -- and sometimes openly copied him. His rapid-footed dancing inspired Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson among others.
He triumphed despite an often unhappy personal life. Brown spent more than two years in a South Carolina prison for aggravated assault and failing to stop for a police officer.
