Its legal up to a certain amount like an ounce and your only suposed to smoke inside the sanctioned cafes, but its so decriminalized that most cops wont give you a hard time. Just dont let them catch you smoking in some neihborhood with a 5 ounce sack on your person.

We went to the dam in sep and it was cool being able to smoke in the coffee shops i have added a link to a coffee shop directory if you search on here you should get some info.
Do a search on the net for coffee shops amsterdam there are lots, we went to barneys not far from the train station it was ok not as good as expected.
James lounge bar & fusion restaurant in Damrak is excellent for eating out and not expensive.
