Hi, Knowm!
I found Key West to be very very pretty and interesting and have been there several times. But it's also very overrun with tourists. Masses of folks, everywhere, seeing the sights and milling around. The place is so beautiful that I really wanted to be more alone with it--just really get a chance to explore and see things without every place being so crowded. I don't like crowds, and when I'm in a beautiful natural place like the Keys or the Grand Canyon, I always find myself resenting all the hordes of people. Next time I go down there, I'm going to stay on one of the lesser known Keys and just have more of the place to myself.
The beaches are beautiful. On the south and east side, there's lots of open beach. Again, lots of people, too, on the sand. On the western side where everyone watches the famous Key West sunset, there's mostly commercial development on the waterfront. Restaurants. Bars. Hotels. All full of tourists watching the sunset or talking too loud and not letting anyone be one with nature.
You can find anyplace to stay that's in your price range. Lots of newish chain hotels around the edges, and lots of B&Bs and inns in the central, older part of town. Everyone's very nice. We scoped out our options online. If you stay in the middle of town, you're nicely centrally located. You can pretty much walk anywhere you want, but there are shuttles and rentable scooters and whatever suits you for getting around. (We walked, but you know me and exercise.) The airport is on the northeastern side of the island, if I'm not mistaken, and I recommend staying away from that particular area. Air traffic is constant and noisy over there. It seems like planes were coming in and landing every 45 seconds.
Hope you have fun!
Thanks Princess.. I have been in touch with Cathy.. : )
Hi Bird.. I am going in my RV and bringing a bicycle. I don't mind the crowds so much (makes for good gazing). I do have some concern about where to park my RV. Being that the campgrounds appear to be a few miles out of town. I want to find a local that wants to make some $$$.. and park my beautiful rig in their driveway or vacant lot.. : )
cheers
and thanks for the insight : )

There are much more fun keys than Key West, Key West is too touristy, unless your going for the party. Halloween's fantasy fest is one of the best party's I have ever been too.
Big Pine, Marathon, and Ramrod are very very nice places. If you want to go fishing for cheap the Marathon Lady on the south side of the Vaca Cut Bridge right next to Captain Hook's is awesome and inexpensive. Captain Hook's is also a good place to hitch a ride on a diveboat.
The Tea Table bridge near Islamorada is another good place to fish, caught many a early morning tarpon there. You can also wade the flats near Bahia Honda and rent kayaks there too. Kayaks will be your best friend unless you have the money to rent a boat or take a guided charter.
I fished the florida key's a lot and did just as good as most just using my kayak, feet, and the bridge system. The best are Vaca Cut, Kemp, Shark Channel, Tea Table, and of course 7 mile and channel 2 and 5 bridges. Make sure you buy a tide chart because when fishing the bridges the tide is the most important thing, you want it moving and you wanna know which it is moving so it takes your bait's out instead of under the bridge. There is a fishing shop right off highway 1 on Big Pine Key and the owner is one of the best guys in the islands for fishing advice, he will tell you everything you need to know and hook you up no bullshit, I wish I rememberd the name but it is obvious when your driving by.
Your favorite thing to do will be to visit Robbies on Islamorada. This is the deal sealer for anyone I bring down there that doesn't quite "get it". Cool place, but the highlight of your trip will be feeding the tarpon out back, one of the coolest experiences ever.
My advice, don't stay in one place, the key's are not that big and you can do a lot in just one day. Try to visit all of them because each has it's own vibe, feel, and special attraction.
Cool bars are Square Grouper(A square grouper is a drug shipment because they wrap the drugs in a square and sink them to the bottom, or drop them out in the glades somewhere to be picked up later) on Marathon, Hogs Breathe in Key West, The Fish House at mm102 is authentic as you can get, Lorelei's mm82 and Papa Joe's mm80 are good places to watch the sunset and consume cocktails with some true conch's. Tickle Stick on Grassy Key was also fun.
Just go explore, it's hard to get that lost if you have a map, and there is never anything unexciting to look at or do.
Take a trip on the Yankee Capts. if you don't fish anywhere else this is a trip you must take. It is a 3 day trip to one of the most beautiful untouched places on earth, the dry tortugas. It is a first class operation at waffle house prices, trust me I have done it the past 3 years and never had a bad moment or experience with them.
Check out the forums at www.floridasportsman.com go to the keys general info forum and you can pretty much find out anything you need to know, these are the people that live there or frequent there year round. Great place where I got a lot of good advice before I started to go to the keys on a weekly basis when I lived in South FLA.
http://keynoter.com/keys_history/ for keys historical pictures, I love looking at the old keys pictures before it got developed, I wish I could have lived there back in the day
Sloppy Joe's I almost forgot, great place.
