Also, Kevin Smith is mighty nice, too.
Terry Gilliam probably...
Martin Scorsese.
He only beats out Francis Ford Cappola because of all the crap FFC did in the 80's
Wes Anderson, Stanley Kubrick
Cohen brothers....darren arronofsky....tarentino...Spike Jones...Spike lee......Tom Twykler (german, if you don't know his films, get them!)
As you can see, i like directors with less of a 'blockbuster' mentality.
There is zero questions.... Stanley Kubrick. There were other brillant directors that were somewhat close (Akira Kurosawa, Scorsese...) but in the end, looking at their career from start to finish!, hands down it is Kubrick.
I honestly don't understand how people can argue for Clint Eastwood. Way to hit and miss. And when I say miss, I mean Space Cowboys miss. For me, he has the poetic Million Dollar Baby and not a whole lot left in the bag.
Love Tarantino to death and he has a brillant resume but there should be a bar set for how many films they need to direct before they can be considered. He is up there though.
Just my few pennies though :)
I am a huge fan of resevior dogs, pulp fiction, dusk till dawn, all of quentins works as well as other films he helps out with.
I feel that his directing style appeals to me very much, however, these last "kill Bill" movies, I cannot watch. I'm sorry. I was never so disappointed.
akira kurosawa, his wonderful films are full of atmosphere with brilliant characterisation and samurai violence. watch the seven samurai, sanjiro or yojimbo. some of the best films ever made.
hmm.... my top three would be quentin tarantino, kevin smith and david fincher, but for the best i would probably say tarantino
