they seem to help the plant avoid being stunted by the intensity.

Ah ok, yes I'm considering CFL's for a babyroom in the future. I have been wondering about the effectiveness of these since a while.
I would transplant all plants into thier own pot. The root balls that are tangled can be seperated with a little care. I have had very good luck seperating root balls by shaking them hard enough for most of the soil to loosen and fall off and they can be seperated. Also for early veg you want lights to be as close as possible 1-2 inch if it is not too hot. This will keep down the plant stretching.
