It's best to trim the leafs off when you dry. You also should trim not only the fan leafs, you can toss most of them anyway. But the small leafs close to the buds should be trimmed as well. That trimming you save for hash and you trim it close to the bud. You prefer to smoke the bud (flower) and not smoke the leaf. When you smoke leaf you are smoking more plant matter then THC but when you smoke the flower you get less plant matter and more trichomes.
a little warmer up to 80f - 87f would be better and get the humidity down to 25% or less and they would dry better and quicker.
After they are dry you trim off the stems and stocks and place the buds in glass mason type jars to cure at room temperature with the lid on tight. Open them once a day the first week for about 20 min then close them back up. The second week you only open the jar if there is still moisture showing.
You should have cured bud in 10 day's to 21 day's. The longer you cure the more mellow it gets.
Hanging them is not required it's just easy for most people.
A little indirect light will not harm them at all at this point. Keep indirect air moving in the room with drying plants.

Hey Mand! Thanks again for the input
Zandor, Thanks for your input as well.
Florida boy.. thank you for your kind words.
I am actually going to keep the leaves on for a few more days I think. I am going to cut them off and continue drying them in a paper bag. I am keeping all of the trimmings, including fan leaves and stems. I will grind up the stems and fan leaves into flour and use them to make butter.
This is mostly going to be used for medical/pain managment... so using the scraps for butter is needed and will leave less waste (I hope)
The temp/humidity is now 71 degrees and 44%
I love the input and all the ideas from everyone though! Keep them coming!
Here are pictures today

I read an article on NORML and the guide said that if you cure with your fan leaves on, they curl and protect the trichomes like a wrapper/shield. Interesting idea..

Grim, that was a good read, and close to what I had read about keeping the fans on.
Thanks for the link! Best of luck with your own war you got happening as well.

Okay boys and girls.
My beautiful plant gave me less in dry weight than I had hoped for. For an all organic grow and for one plant... it is still not bad I guess.
I got 133 grams of dry bud from the 1 plant. No seeds, and I tell you, I took the time to trim off as much stem as I could. In some of my jars, there are ZERO stems!
I may have over dried her as when I read that the stem would "snap" I thought it meant it would snap and break... so I left my plant hanging for 11 days. Now after 12 hours in the mason jars, no moisture.
We will see though.
I also got 65 grams of fan leaves and 39 grams of stems to grind into flour and make butter and cook with olive oil.
That should give me just over a pound of really good butter. Which, for pain management, will give me the equivalent of about 5.7 ounces with my entire grow. 4.6 being pure bud though.
I will post a log soon.

good job sticky, if you over dried your buds, the only thing you have to do is add some of the leaves in with the buds. that will give it that moisture back. good luck.
