I'm going to drop out of college.

You just went from being 100% introverted in the beginning of your speech, but by the end you were saying things like "I know I just need to get out and meet people," in which you're only procrastinating. If you move in with someone else it FORCES you to get more social. My bro was a loser and didn't even go to his Senior Prom, but he's a junior in college right now, moved into a house and parties every weekend. As introverted as they came when he was in high school.
It's not that I don't want to be more social. I've decided that I'm going to go out and meet people. But moving in with people I don't know isn't a risk I want to take. Besides, even if I get a social life going, I'm going to have to leave all my friends forever a few months later.

It's definately not too late to start, especially at your age. For Christs Sake, you want to be a TRANSLATOR, one of the first jobs I would think of that requires social and communicational skills.
I think you're confusing translators with interpreters. Translators handle text, interpreters handle speech.

Also, you said yourself it was going to be hard to break into be a translator. You couldn't land a job or even find your own clients in such a competitive business without having confidence.
True. I need to build confidence, but there's no reason I need to stay at college to do that.

And as Kiwi said, you owe it to yourself to finish this last year. You worked hard all through grade school, high school and now college, and I'm assuming you had little or no fun through your entire education being as introverted as you are. You're going to throw all of that hard work away just because you want to start translating Spanish for immigration border patrol, making 20 grand a year? Sounds stupid to me.
I didn't say I was definitely getting into translating. I just said I was thinking about it. And besides, the border patrol doesn't do a lot of translating; they do interpreting. Translation doesn't actually pay that bad, since there is a high demand for it and not very many people who can do it well.
And even if I don't make that great a salary, so what? I just want to get by and derive happiness from the things that truly matter, not work my ass off just to get more stuff.

And no degree is useless, either. Every single college and University in America wouldn't offer large linguistics programs if the degree proved no good.
Most colleges and universities don't offer large linguistics programs. I chose this one because it was one of the few that did have a linguistics program, and even here it's pretty small. You tell me, what job can you get in linguistics? I can't think of one.
I'm going to drop out of college.
I quit college last quarter completely by choice, go for it
I'm going to drop out of college.

What do you have to lose? each day is a new chance to change your life for the better. I know theres people on your campus that like to chill and smoke a few bowls. Find them, you'll be glad you did. Don't give up. one more year and you'll have a degree (even if you don't use it) and you may even learn somethign more important than what they teach in class, something about yourself. College is a time to do more than just party and be wild. Its learning who you are. I'm on year 6 and I still think a few more years would do me good. The longer I'm here the more I learn about myself and others. It can only help you to touph it out one more year.
I'm going to learn more about the world and myself no matter where I am. I can meet people anywhere. I don't see how college is necessary to do that. What do I have to lose? Well, for one I'll be spending 33% more money on college than I would otherwise, for a diploma that I feel won't do anything for me. Plus, it's not like I won't have anything to put on my résumé. Surely the three years will count for something, right? I don't need the diploma to prove that I'm an intelligent person. Anyone who looks at my grades and SAT scores will know that.
I'm going to drop out of college.

Bill Gates may have dropped out of college, but is he happy? Do you know Bill Gates? You can't compare yourself to him.
I'm not comparing myself to Bill Gates. I don't want to be Bill Gates. And as rich as he is, I doubt he's really happy. Which is just one more reason not to spend my life chasing money.

Just focus on the end of the next year. Get through it and that will be that. You'll be able to look back and say you finished college. You'll have completed something not alot of people get to do, and you're so close to doing it. Do it for the people who wish they were in your shoes. Do it for your parents. It isn't just your happiness on the line, and I think you're being too selfish if you quit.
I've been doing things for my parents my whole life. But I'm an adult now and I need to start making my own life decisions. They'll be upset at first but they'll come to accept my decision. Plus, once I start making my own living I won't be a financial drain on my already poor family (which is gaining an extra member later this year by the way).

So anyway, suck it up you baby and finish college.
Thanks for calling me a baby. It really makes me sympathetic to your plea.
I'm going to drop out of college.
Oniernaut if i were you i would stick out the last year of college, sure you may have all the right reasons to quit school but you only have 1 year left to graduate with a degree in something. plus many jobs dont even bother to look at transcripts, some do but many dont that you will start working at.
I'm going to drop out of college.
But what will that degree get me, besides a higher-level, higher-paying job that I don't want? It was a big mistake to come here in the first place. It just took me three years to realize that. And just because I've already put in three years of hard work doesn't mean I shouldn't correct that mistake now.
I'm going to drop out of college.
You say you would like to learn French more fluently? Is there no exchange courses you can do? i.e. go to France for your final year.
Sure, even the idea of it sounds daunting, BUT its the perfect opportunity to:
A, have more of an intrest in what you are learning
B, its more practical, as you have no choice but to learn and get over the barrier.
C, French chicks are the best.
This is just one half of a big arguament with choices. Weigh everything out as much as you can, and find the best solution.
This may all sound out of context, but I have been awake all night, and there is a possibillity that I ain't thinking straight, but to me, it sounds how I meant it to sound.
I'm going to drop out of college.

It's not going to ruin my life. It's not like everybody who doesn't have a college degree has a miserable life and they are completely powerless to make it better. I've met several people who say dropping out of school was the best decision they ever made.

You can't go wrong if you get your diploma.
I can if it doesn't ever do anything for me except cost me more money.

If you drop out you'll just be proving to your family and this board what a waste of time the last 3 years of your life was.
So what? It was a waste of time, a hellish waste of time. Why should I deny that? I didn't know better then, but I do now. I have no qualms about admitting that I've made a mistake.

So go ahead and drop out. It makes no difference to me, or anyone else here. Just remember it was your decision. It will be your fault and nobody will sympathize for you in the end. I'm out.
I don't want sympathy. I want happiness and freedom.
I'm going to drop out of college.
Fuck all these people that are saying suck it up. I dont see this forum as the place to be looking for sound advice on this kind of thing. I couldnt comment on it because I dont know you personally but what I can tell you is that my uncle is a german/russian translator/interpreter and he doesnt seem too happy with his job. Only cool thing he did was interpret for the olympics twice. I'd say meditate on it and cut your parents off from your life for awhile, it can really cloud your thoughts. Whatever you decide to do good luck with it man!
I'm going to drop out of college.
Drop out.
You obviously don't want the bullshit they have to offer, which is good. Too bad it took you this long to figure it out, three years is a long time. I hope you're not in debt. I was going to go to college this year. I am so glad I didn't. It's a nice feeling to be debt free with a whole life ahead of you.
Good luck in all your future endeavors. :)
