I read a forum a couple days ago around here some where that talked about volcanite. I do not think it can be crushed up superfine as it would not have air pockets and the roots may need more oxygen but I here it is good to use in hydroponic apps. I can not say I have tried it my self except to put on the bottom of soil pots to promote drainage. It made them a bit heavy so I stop using them. Just an experiment.

Is it heavy?

Yeah it's heavy but that's probably because it's been crushed up pretty well.
Hmm, I have never heard of using really crushed up stone, but there are a couple threads on this site that mention using lava rock which is the same as volcanite for a hydro medium in bigger chuncks where it still is porous enough to store air in the pockets.
