Laws govern this area as do apartment policies.
My land lord is a company; thus they are more professional. This means they come once every 6 months and check everyones fire alarms and such. There are also new carpets every two or three years. Stuff like that.
They can also come in to check on water leaks or other "emergency" type items at will with no prior notice...
By law if it is not an emergency, I have a right to a 24 hour notice before they can enter to inspect. That is enough time to hide shop; or at the very least to start apartment shopping. haha
Our inspector comes every 6 months to check smoke detectors but depending on where you live state law may be different. They have to give 24 hour notice though.
