Darn, so that's what they call it. Hell, I've always done it. Just seemed logical to me. I have grown some w/o trimming and you have a bunch of small airy buds that don't develope enough to make it worth the time in manicauring.

I learned this technique from a guy on the old AN forum, and he takes it a step farther than just 1/3. 2 days before flipping trim everything except the very top shoot. It is hard to do it the first time as it seems you have destroyed your plants, but trust me when I say that it works out in the end. If you have 1000 watt lights it is not as beneficial as the light penetrates deeper. I run 600 watts and it works out quite nicely. Very little fluffy buds, and big fat main colas. Really reduces the amount of trimming you have to do in the end.
Google 'pistilwhipt' for more discussion of this technique. The way I do it is to remove all scraggly crappy weak spindly low branches right before flowering. That leaves all the fan leaves that are getting good light, and from 1-5 good strong main stems. Allow about 2-4 tops per square foot to keep the canopy continuous.
I do the same thing stinky, but then I keep up with removing any shoots/buds that start growing over the course of flowering. It doesn't seem to stress the plants to any negative results and it "seems" like the top buds are denser than when I just let the lower growth continue.
I too saw the urban grower lollipop video so I thought I'd try it. I'm about 50 days into flowering seeing some fat buds on the lollipopped plants but not as much resin production on those I lollipopped. The urban grower said when they reach 24 in. cut off the bottom branchs put them in tomato cages and trigger the flowering stage. some of the buds are bigger and some didn't seem to make much difference so I'd say it depends on the strain, as alot of growing techniques might work better than others with a specific strain... jus' my 2 cents
Why not just cut your clones and leave them long w/o bottom Veg and flower in just a few days? That wuld be somewhat the same SOG?
im surprised not many grow lollipop buds. ill post some pics when i harvest. i got em all on my cam. i like doing this with white widow. you cut off about 2/3 of the bottom branches. LEAVE FAN LEAFS PEOPLE.
If you dont cut the fan leaves they will grow bigger and most likely wont stunt the plant. Weed plants hold alot of energy in the fan leafs so cutting them all off isnt a good idea. keep anything on the plant that looks like it will combine with the cola bud. heres some of my early pics.
First pic is a pic of my plant im lollipopping. i do this alot and turns out great everytime.
Second pic is some of my plants after spraying them with neem oil since i had spider mites. neem oil/dishSoap is the best shit to use in my opionion.

What video was the that had it?
just my humble opinion ----on this 2 1/2 year old thread ----as practiced in my SOG any branches that might grow past the edge of my pots and overlap its neighbor are removed. all fans are left until brown and crispy.% of lower material removed varies with strain/pheno and can range from 0% to 50%. harvested bud maybe spear shaped to round[lollipop] again depending on strain/pheno.BTW i use 5.5 inch square pots , 24 of them per 400watt HPS in a 3'X2' area .lollipoping has no effect on resin production nor does it make the buds leafy
