They all progressed Rock in their own way but I think the Beatles actually opened up the door for Rock bands. They took the rock world from candy music to something beyond.

oh man, these are all great. i'd add the grateful dead, johnny cash, and john lennon as a solo artist. my bro and i were having this discussion about him and how he was probably the greatest man who ever lived. ever. including jesus. (my bro thinks lennon was the messiah)
A few years ago, on VH1, the most influential were 1. The Beatles 2. Rolling Stones 3. Jimi Hendrix.
