Who do I expect him to pick? I honestly don't care. But since you asked... how many other names on his short list might have been black? Were they there because they were qualified or because W wanted to make Joe Six-pack feel like less of a racist? If the latter falls anywhere on their list of "pros" for a candidate, I take issue with that.

I've been thinking about this since I posted the first time, actually. I'm not black. I grew up in a family where race just wasn't an issue though. I guess you could say I grew up in kind of a fog as a result. I'm still surprised every now and then by what people will say about someone just because of their skin color. I'm even more surprised, though, by the number of people in the "majority" that are willing to just sit back and keep their mouths shut. Racism exists because it is allowed to fester, unchallenged.

I find myself passionate about the Condi issue because it's nothing more than a leaking bandaid. Regardless of how qualified she is, I feel she is there to make our society feel better. Just look at Torog. He's not a racist! He loves Condi! Yet, he still makes comments implying that she has reached a summit impassable by the rest of the black community. Then we have folks implying that if all blacks were more like Condi they would be better off. This "tongue-in-cheek" racism does just as much to thwart progress and I find it equally unacceptable.

With as inherently different as we all are it has to be lonely waiting for that whitewashed American utopia.

Many people on this thread seem to be blaming a minority for being born into a society that glorifies material posessions.

Noone seems to realise or care that we're flooded with commercials for things we desperately must have because the government gives corporations all kinds of tax breaks that they can then funnel into marketing.

Add to that neighbourhoods that arent taken care of by the government and the only time the government takes an interest in them is when they're looking for someone to blame for society's problems or for a quick arrest.

Funny, you guys claim that "blacks" should take responsibility and become a liar like condisleeza, when in fact the leaders of your country can't be bothered to take responsibility for their own actions either...hmmm...

While I normally consider Tholiak to be a right wing, racist ass he is on to something here. Take the politics out of the equation and it is people like Condi, Colin Powell, and all the other Black lawyers, doctors, CEO's etc out there that should be role models for the Black community. But instead of being looked up to, they are criticized for selling out and/or becomming nothing more than a white man with black skin. Instead, its the gangster rappers and death row inmates who become models for the community.

And its not just Whites that are pointing this out. Bill Cosby recently gave a speech where he blasted the black community for continuing to raise a new generation of little gangsters stating how parents even start dressing their little 2-3 year olds in gangsta clothing. The main point of his speech was that while the Black community needs to continue to fight against racism and discrimination it needs to realize that its not enough to just say "don't discriminate". Blacks need to stop simply blaming the Whites for their problems and start making the change for themselves and a big part of that is to stop glorifying the gang banger culture. Needless to say, his speech didn't go over too well.

It can be very hard for Blacks to make the change for themselves when there is still so much descrimination out there....just look at some of these comments...the playing field is by no means leveled.

Bill Cosby is an interesting man. He is very talented and I respect him a lot but the idealistic image he has for his people is unrealistic. You can't suppress a lifetime of African culture, years of slavery, and a civil rights movement in an entire people. Like anyone else, they want their own image--their own customs. The "Doctor and Mrs. Huxtable" reality he wants for them I simply think is too narrow-minded for the black community.

Go down to the mall and peruse the various "stupid spoiled whore" stores that cater to 8-11 year old white girls. I mean really. Paris Hilton. If I had a daughter would this be her role model? And what about the boys? Go into an Abercrombie and Fitch and open one of their catalogs. Of course, you'll have to buy one and remove the plastic packaging first to get to the naked women and scenes of guys playing "sports" with each other. Caucasian values, these?

I agree with you about Condoleezza Rice's politics, BlueCat (nice to see you back by the way). When I said Blacks should look up to people like her I meant professional and successful, not Bush scum. People are getting off the subject here. It's not about who is in the Bush administration. It's about the fact that so many Blacks seem to be getting their role models in the wrong places.

You mention leveling the playing field, what does that really mean? I'm a professional working for a distributor of semiconductor manufacturing equipment. In my position I hire, and sometimes fire, people. When I interview someone I look for qualifications. I don't give a rats ass about a person's color, race, sexual prefernce, etc. I want the person who can do the job the best. So, if leveling the plaing field means hiring someone based on their skills without regard to their skin color I am all for it. If, however, "leveling the playing field" means bringing the level down to accommodate those with fewer skills , whatever their color, then forget it.

I honestly don't see that there is so much discrimination out there anymore. At least not soley because of a persons skin color. Maybe it's because I'm out here in California which is so liberal or maybe I'm just blind, but I don't see it. There are a lot of other minorities out there who came here with nothing and they're doing great. Nobody I know would deny a person a job, or anything else, soley because of the color of his or her skin. They would, however, deny that person a professional job if he came in wearing gangsta clothing, speaking in ebonics, and acting like he was still in the ghetto. Is that still discrimination? I don't think so.
