It doesn't (shouldn't) burn or smell like burning at all. Done right, there's no smoke. It's tricky to do without a commercial vaporizer.
That said, the most success I've had with vaporization is with a glass tube and an adjustable heat gun (like the kind you get at Home Depot), set to the right temperature (just below flash point - 190 deg C).
