I do know that some cfls get hotter then others but I'd be surprised if that was the culprit. Just my opinion based on my tiny experience and what I've read.
Could it be from nutrient prepared water sitting on the leaves? just a random thought?
I'm having health issues with a few of mine and I cant figure it out so I'm definitely not giving advice on that aspect.
This is what I experienced with mine Attachment 288592
4 days after moving them from 4 inches to 8 to 10 inches, this is what they looked like. Attachment 288593
It could be due to the intensity of the 10 CFLsi am using, but I had them all spread out on the top and sides. the buds in the center, farther away from the light did not get burned. And you may have hit the nail on the head Joe, when you say that some CFLs run hotter than others. In my situation, they were too hot. That is one thing I love about this site, ask, any you will get many opinions, Including my OPINION, LOL

I was looking at the top of the page and got confused.:wtf: I just realized those picks and posts where old.
wow! Well that is definitive prof right there . That's good to know.
My CFL's I can squeeze in my hand and its no where near uncomfortable for heat. I have no experience flowering using CFL's mine is only vegging.
Hopefully no long term damage was done.

I loled to this.
Yeah an update would be nice. Safer for close range would be cool daylight cfls. They do get hot as well, still need to take care with them.

I like to revive old posts, I think they are more helpful being revived, than sitting at the bottom of a pile of threads
