There is a big difference between strains....I would create perhaps 20 distinct categories that I could put 1000s of different strains in. They all get you high some more than others but aroma and taste are great in variety...the spice of life. I wasn't alive in the 70s but I would say most of what i grew has been incredible in potency and variety
Well now, looks like the ole reverse psychology has paid off. If'n I plant a few seeds here and there and then be sprinkled with a little knowledge from folks like you, who actually care. Then maaabey I can learn from my mistakes and continue to put up with the young sweet bitches of ignorant kids who, may be witty in their own streetwise way; if not, but lacking in understanding that will hopefully come to them in time! As I didn't have the patience of a rattlesnake in my youth, perhaps now I will have the patience to listen to those who "young or old" have their neighbor's best interest in mind.
P.S. for what it's worth I'm not any kind of authority figure, just a retired Park Ranger, with a niche for getting high; besides, as I burn up more energy than my age can muster, I really like the munchies side of this unique equation.

I was not alive in 70s. I have always thought that myriad of strains is beautiful its like almost choosing varieties of beer haha. granted, stupid people come up this strain such as SuperDaDa or KissMyAss (im just making it up) for avarice purpose which is true however every smoke is distinct that is why connoisseurs and growers alike (thats yall and me) exist. i believe we should embrace the beauty of MJ and its properties.
meh, I like having a variety to choose from. Maybe you haven't smoked enough to actually tell the difference, but i know i can. Now is it overpriced because of the name? fuck yeah it is. It does suck that average price for an 8th of good bud is 50 bucks, but thats just how it is. Hopefully when its legalized we will see a big price drop.
I had some mind blowing Jamaican "commercial pot" in the 70's that I never had again and none of these tutti fruitti stains come close.
Is it crazy to think that maybe all you old timers need to take a hiatus for a minute, and then come back to smoking? I'm sure 30 years does wonders for the tolerance, it would be no wonder that you don't get high "like you used to".
It isn't the pot that's not good, it's your resinated lungs and your 30+ year tolerance.
Scientists do GCMS testing on samples of marijuana and frequently find that THC % has gone up, and continues to do so. The only valid explanation would be that some of that old school land race weed was much higher in CBD or CBN or some other cannabinoid that works in conjunction with THC in your brain making you remember a different kind of buzz.
Maybe the lack of science back then caused people to keep strains alive because of the subjective views of those who smoked them, not because someone or some machine told them it was good? I dunno, I just think this debate is as old as smoking itself.
Most of the old schoolers that I smoke with really enjoy the homegrown that I share with them, and they all say that they have never seen or tasted anything like it, so I guess for now that'll have to be good enough for me.
I are old and I know that I can't smell subtle aromas or taste all the flavors I'm supposed to, lots of pot do taste quite the same to me. But the uniques I can still taste/smell. And as far as tollerance, I can easily get toasted on a joint or less of anything we grow around here. :jointsmile:
Seems to me 'ole DJ Short had it down. First it was just plain old Mexican weed, seeds, stems, wrapped in colored celophane and $200 a Key. Then, along came Columbian, much stronger, better taste, then Jamacian, then Panama Red. Prices hit $35.00 an oz and they were full ounces. The '70's rolled around and a lota weed was comming from 'Nam and Thailand but some was treated with heavy narcotics and not all natural. Tht seemed to start the chemical addition stage where just about anything could be sprayed on crappy weed to get more $$$$ and get you high one way or another. I'm sure some remember paraquat (sp) being sprayed by the Gubment to waste weed all over the world.
Today it would seem we are getting back to the more natural strains and although the prices are much higher so are wages and everything else. It cost me $22.00 in gas to drive from Boston to San Francisco in 1968 but I was only making $2.00 and hour then too.
