LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. -- John McCain and Sarah Palin criticized Democrat Barack Obama over the amount of money he has requested for his home state of Illinois, even though Alaska under Palin's leadership has asked Washington for 10 times more money per citizen for pet projects.
<snip>
Obama hasn't asked for any earmarks this year. Last year, he asked for $311 million worth, about $25 for every Illinois resident. Alaska asked this year for earmarks totaling $198 million, about $295 for every Alaska citizen.
Palin has cut back on pork project requests, but under her administration, Alaska is still and by far the largest per-capita consumer of federal pet-project spending.
The governor did reject plans to build the notorious "Bridge to Nowhere" after Congress had cut off its financing.
McCain and Palin were presented as a maverick team in a campaign ad released Monday that played up their reputation for taking on entrenched interests. The ad credits Palin with stopping the bridge without mentioning she once appeared to support it.

Sarah Palin's Alaskonomics
Sarah Palin's Alaskonomics - TIME
Sarah Palin thinks she is a better American than you because she comes from a small town and a superior human being because she isn't a journalist and has never lived in Washington and likes to watch her kids play hockey. Although Palin praised John McCain in her acceptance speech as a man who puts the good of his country ahead of partisan politics, McCain pretty much proved the opposite with his selection of a running mate whose main asset is her ability to reignite the culture wars. So maybe Governor Palin does represent everything that is good and fine about America, as she herself maintains. But spare us, please, any talk about how she is a tough fiscal conservative
Palin has continued to repeat the already exposed lie that she said "No, thanks" to the famous "bridge to nowhere" (McCain's favorite example of wasteful federal spending). In fact, she said "Yes, please" until the project became a symbol and political albatross.
Back to reality. Of the 50 states, Alaska ranks No. 1 in taxes per resident and No. 1 in spending per resident. Its tax burden per resident is 2 1/2 times the national average; its spending, more than double. The trick is that Alaska's government spends money on its own citizens and taxes the rest of us to pay for it. Although Palin, like McCain, talks about liberating ourselves from dependence on foreign oil, there is no evidence that being dependent on Alaskan oil would be any more pleasant to the pocketbook.
Alaska is, in essence, an adjunct member of OPEC. It has four different taxes on oil, which produce more than 89% of the state's unrestricted revenue. On average, three-quarters of the value of a barrel of oil is taken by the state government before that oil is permitted to leave the state. Alaska residents each get a yearly check for about $2,000 from oil revenues, plus an additional $1,200 pushed through by Palin last year to take advantage of rising oil prices. Any sympathy the governor of Alaska expresses for folks in the lower 48 who are suffering from high gas prices or can't afford to heat their homes is strictly crocodile tears.
As if it couldn't support itself, Alaska also ranks No. 1, year after year, in money it sucks in from Washington. In 2005 (the most recent figures), according to the Tax Foundation, Alaska ranked 18th in federal taxes paid per resident ($5,434) but first in federal spending received per resident ($13,950). Its ratio of federal spending received to federal taxes paid ranks third among the 50 states, and in the absolute amount it receives from Washington over and above the amount it sends to Washington, Alaska ranks No.

GREAT news source e.g..
Alaska is the only state that does not collect state sales tax or levy an individual income tax. To finance state operations, Alaska depends primarily on petroleum revenues. Some of its cities and other local jurisdictions, however, do collect sales tax revenue.
Alaska state taxes
If I recall the residence even get a yearly check for oil revenues......poor overtaxed bastards. LMAO!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong in regards to that only Senators can request/get earmark money.
Only Senators can insert earmarks into senate bills, but Governors and other state officials can and do make requests of their Senators for specific earmarks to be inserted by their Senators. And Governors can and do hire lobbyists to push for bills that include their state's earmarks. So yes, only Senators actually make the earmarks, but Governors are involved in the process.

When the author is referring to Alaska being the number one in taxes per resident and that the taxes per person are 2-and-1/2 higher than other states, he isn't saying that the PEOPLE of Alaska pay that much. That's the whole point! The rest of us pay for it! Not the Alaskans! YOU pay for it!
Alaska rakes in 2 1/2 times as much revenue per person than the rest of the country because they TAX THE SHIT out of the oil being pumped out of their state. As all fiscal conservatives who criticise the proposed windfall profits tax on oil like to point out, that tax gets passed on to the rest of the consumers who buy oil in the form of higher prices.
So Alaska adds to the cost of oil, takes money out of YOUR pocket at the pump, so that its citizens pay NO income tax, NO sales tax, and GET A CHECK every year for about $2000! YOU pay for that! Hahahahahaha! Sucker! Alaska is ripping you off!
The money is taken from you in the form of higher energy costs and given to the citizens of Alaska as free cash money every year! Suck on that, all you who think Palin is a fiscal conservative! Hahahahahaha!
In addition, Alaska is the biggest recipient of Federal spending per person in the nation. For every $1 Alaska sends the Feds in the form of income tax, they get back $1.75. As if they couldn't pay for this stuff themselves!
They pay no state income tax, no state sales tax, minimal property tax! They get $2000 free cash money a year taken from YOU in the form of oil taxes! And they get back a 75% return on every dollar they send to the Feds in the form of income taxes! That money comes from YOU as well!
The idea that Palin is a fiscal conservative is a total joke! Talk about tax and spend! Talk about a redistribution of wealth!

Here's another article about "fiscal conservative" Sarah Palin and how she is screwing YOU in order to give away free gas to Alaskans:
Palin seeks $1.2 billion to slash energy bills: Alaska News | adn.com
Basically it says Sarah Palin increased taxes on oil production in Alaska so much that there is a massive $5,000,000,000 surplus in Alaska's budget. There is a lot of fighting in the legislature about how to spend it all. Palin has proposed giving away a debit card to all Alaska residents that would allow them to get $100 a month in free gas. That's on top of the $2000 a year free cash they get every year, and on top of the EXTRA $1200 she gave them last year.
So basically she increased taxes on Alaska oil, and that cost gets passed on to YOU in the form of higher gas prices so that she can give away FREE GAS to Alaskans. YOUR $4.00 gas helps buy FREE GAS for Alaskans!
Someone explain to me how that is fiscal conservatism!!!
It's not --- it's a ripoff!!!!!
Sarah Palin ripped you off to give away free gas in Alaska. No wonder she has a high approval rating in her state --- she's giving away your money to her constituents! Not sure how that will help her in the lower 48.

dragonrider - yikes, I'm glad you got those figures. I knew Alaska was like that, but I didn't realize it was that bad. I wonder what she would do on a national level? Borrow a ton of money and send everyone checks?

ALASKA No State Income Tax
FLORIDA No State Income Tax
NEVADA No State Income Tax
SOUTH DAKOTA No State Income Tax
WASHINGTON No State Income Tax
WYOMING No State Income Tax
Individual Income Tax Rates-2008
What does the average Joe in Florida see from all the tourist revenue?; or the ones in Nevada from the gambling? Or from South Dakota from the oil? Or the others? NOTHING! Props to Alaska for giving back to the people from the riches earned. I personally would question the others myself. The oil there IS part of Alaskas wealth and should be shared by the people of that state. Better than creating a bunch of useless government programs on how to aid the people. That's part of "fiscal conservatism", let the people take care of their own money instead of having Uncle Sam play daddy.
Like another member stated; the more you expect from the government in social programs the more he's going to want to intervien in your daily life. Maybe that's why Alaska is so "liberal" on marijuana laws.
