Oy vey! Nutrient burn?
hey weedhound...will follow your advice and see what happens then...was going to put them under 12/12 tomorrow, but i'll wait until wednesday...the veg nutes i use should (at least according to canna's own instructions) continue to be used in the flowering cycle until the first sign of flowering, so i won't be changing (or adding!) nutes at all in the next few days. if you'd like, i'll update with pics on wednesday....hopefully i can save these girls!
i've only done two other grows before this...also using nft...and there were simply no problems...the first was nirvana bubbleicious, the second was snow white...but those seeds weren't 'feminized'...are there generally more hiccups with feminized seeds in your (and other's) experience?
oh, and i almost forgot...the one plant that's all shrivelled up was topped after showing four sets of leaves...could this explain her extreme reaction to the uptake in nutes compared to the other plant?
apologies for having so many questions! i'm still a 'newbie' like they say...
all best,
jash

If they are the same strain, it's funny they should react SO differently to the nutes. I don't think topping would have anything to do with how much nutes they uptake....not that I have ever heard anyway but I suppose you could put it down to stress.
Do you have a photo of how they look now? We want to be sure we are moving them in the right direction....you are thinking they look better?

I think they're looking a little better...I was going to wait on sending pics until Wednesday, but since you asked...note how the tops of the plants seem to have perked up some (at least to my perhaps overly optimistic mind)...
I really appreciate your interest and concern and advice!
best,

I agree...they are better. You may lose some leaf tips or even some leaves and roots...but I think you caught it quick enough to keep them in the game.
Edit: You're quite welcome. Keep me updated. :)

Its the heat baby. Get the lamp higher.

Oy vey! Nutrient burn?
Well, four days after my last post and the two girls are growing ... but, I must admit, they do not look half as perky as my last two grows... herbie says it's the heat...and many of the leaves are dry to the touch...and yellow spotting and leaf-tip burn continues to plague them....but...
....there's been a serious cold snap where i live ... the girls are growing in my cold attic (albeit in a self-enclosed light proof box with intake and outtake fans)...and my friendly hydro salesman suggested i use an aquarium heater to get the water up to about 24 C. Indoor temps are about 28 C. Does this sound alright to all of you out there? Lamp is 250 HPS, about 10 or so inches from tops of plants.
all best and thanks,

Don't worry about rasing the water temps right now. Also, the damage that was done to the plant leaves won't go away, but the new leaves will be good once the issue is fixed.
Put the back of your hand at the height of the leaves and lift the lamp until you don't feel any heat.
You'll be good again in no time, don't stress.

Ok...the conversion I am getting from C to F is 82F from 28C. Is this correct because that doesn't sound cold at ALL to me. Ideal temp for water IS 75F (24C) but I'm missing what your are saying about the "cold snap" and the 82F degree temps.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. Indoor temps have consistently been around 78 F. Nutrient/water temps have been around 60 F, until I got an aquarium heater yesterday and bumped it up to about 70F.
I've got some more (pathetic) pics...note the abundance of roots already floating around the reservoir itself...
...after two great grows, this one's turning out to be the sad one:(. I'm going to keep them vegging until the leaves turn green or until they die (sob sob). My friendly hydro guy's latest theory is that now they're not getting enough nutrients...the EC meter reads .7...he suggests bumping it up to 1.1, given that they've been vegging for three weeks now...he also suggests taking the lights from 24/24 to 18/24.
all best and thanks

I don't understand the purpose of 18/24, did you mean 18/6 ?
