If you pay someone to put a vent in your house, make sure you have things very clearly spelled out in writing. Have a set time it will take. Give him a bonus if he finishes early, and give him a penalty if he finishes late. Give him a bigger penalty if he finishes even later. It will be guaranteed not to leak for 15 years, or he will have to pay you whatever you agree upon before signing the contract, or he will have to fix it, or whatever you want. He is working for you, and you can make your own contract, or make addendums to his. If he doesn't like it, there are plenty of contractors and handymen that would love to find some work. Some of them are even good. Present company excluded of course, contactors suck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep a close eye on every thing they do. They will gladly let your whole family end up in a tent in the woods to save $0.50. They will look you in the eye and lie their asses off. They will try to get final payment before the job is complete, then run out on you and put you on their ignore list. They will cause tens of thousands of dollars in damage to your home and move to a different state. They will steal your favorite shovel. They will fuck you up royally. What, me? Some bad experiences? Na.
I donā??t know who you were talking to, but they had no idea what they were talking about. You canā??t put a vent in an attic? What the hell kind of nonsense is that? Itā??s done all the time and itā??s a piece of cake. I suppose next youā??re going to tell me itā??s impossible to install a skylight. Itā??s real easy to do it and have the vent(s) not leak. Now keep this to yourself, but hereā??s the secretā?¦ You do it correctly!
If you choose to do it yourself itā??s no problem if you have a little common sense and an ability to operate a jig saw. If you have not operated a jig saw and are apprehensive about doing so, keep in mind they are nothing to be afraid of. Iā??m assuming that you have not done this before, so you go to Home Depot or something and buy a book concerning the subject. Thereā??s a great one that I highly recommend, called ā??The Complete and Simplified Guide on How To Install Skylights and Vents in an Attic for Dummiesā?. This is an awesome read, even if you arenā??t planning on doing any projects. I think itā??s also available at the library.
I am not a wiz with tools or anything, and I put a vent in the side of my house, which has Hardiplank siding (concrete and fiber). Havenā??t had a problem so far, 5 years running. Putting one in your roof is slightly more difficult, but not a problem if you do it right. Read up or ask an expert to explain it thoroughly. Not the guy you talked to before.
And yeah, no lead. Itā??s bad news.
