a 3/8 shank
hole saw kits are universal to the shank size either a 3/8 for smaller sizes, and generally 1/2 for larger sizes
a 1/2 shank but a drill like that will cost abit more,
or get another smaller holesaw and interchange the saw part, most enterchange

and it fits a 3/8 chuck.

that should do good, ive never thought to use 1 like that before
good thing is you dont have to change bits anytime you want to change hole size
if you have a drill already just grab a jigsaw at lowes, hd, menards, etc. Trace out your 6 inch diameter hole with a drafting compass (about 3 bucks at walgreens, office depot, etc.).Use a 1/2" drill bit to make a hole and use the jigsaw to cut out your circle cause that 6 inch holesaw is expensive. if you want to spend the 70 bucks, feel free, the right tool for the job is always best. You can get a cheap jigsaw for about 19 bucks.
If you have the room to work in, a sabre saw will work just fine....it will cut a fairly small radius circle, if you don't care what it looks like, use a sawzall, the hole saw in the electric drill will leave a very nice looking, neat hole.....the down side of the hole saw is that if it catches or binds in the hole, it will break your wrist. The larges hole saw that *I* will use in a drill is 4 inches, and I do that kind of stuff for a living.
