I have my bong water about 5cm above the end of the stem. It is clear that the more water the smoke travels through the more it will be filtered and cooled. I have as much water as I can without creating too much drag on the bong.

I just fill it up, depending on where the hit hole is and down tube.
With my bong, about an inch under the hit hole is where it's at.
yeah i always fill it up as much as i can thinking it will help because of filtration plus i have a diffuser so i though if the bubbles had more time in the water it would be better some how but i just wanted to ask some other people and see what they thought ya know?
I have a ceramic bong and I cant see inside it... I put in 1/4 of a cup of water into mine. I have figured out that that is the perfect amount of water to cover the stem and to not make water go up the bong and into my mouth when I toke dat bitch hard.

I dont see any reason you would have to put more water in than to cover the stem, it just makes it take more effort to pull
i just put enough past the stem. if you want a cooler or smoother hit or whatnot. i throw some ice in there. definately but once you get stoned. does it really matter if its smooth or not. i mean really it doesnt matter in the first place but i do understand preferences. so really its all about what you like best in the end >_> am i right?
i pack mine full of crushed ice to the rim then through the session it turns to just the right amount of slush ice water for me i like lots of water to though
i too put crushed ice in mine, and the water with it normally comes up an inch or maybe even mroe pasted the steam.
i think it depends on the bong though. mine is really tall so putting a lot in is good because i cant clear it in less than 2 hits.
I cant wait till my new bong comes!!!!!
if you suck water or can't get a killer hit: too much water
if you don't hear water: too little water
it varies from pipe to pipe
I usually put just enough for the stem to go in and thats all....but thats just what I like.
