youtube started out home grown and got bought out for some ridiculous amount not long ago.

the same as myspaz which got bought out my rupert mudocks company

If they made it members only they would lose millions of potential customers. Open to everyone they reach a much larger audience.

Google bought Youtube in the winter of 06 for $1.65 billion in stock.

Newscorp bought the parent company of Myspace for $580 million like the spring of 06 I believe.

I didnt say members only I said maybe like a membership you can choose to pay for like with hotmail, or this website at one time where you could pay to become a member and have additional features.

If they make changes they would probably lose people to other sites offering the same thing for free, after all why pay when someone is giving it away ?

Most internet sites are making money from advertisements. Either per unique view, a set fee, or sale of their product thought that specific advertisement.
Companys out there want people to know what they do, with millions of people on YouTube/Myspace daily/weekly, that's a wide audience market worth big bucks. Any site getting mass traffic is worth alot of monies.

Like I said additional features cannabis.com is free but people stil used to pay to be members the same with a lot of websites.
