I'm a guitarist as you may imagine, but how I'd love to be able to walk into a room that has a piano and play it. It's the king of instruments! :D

After 14 years of playing guitar, I can tell you I wish I took piano first. I've since then learned how to play both qutie well, but Piano teaches a more fundamental, "this is how things work" lesson, laying a foundation. Guitar is ALOT easier to learn once you understand note structure and music theory.
Also, scales (what he'll learn first) are alot easier to learn and remember on a piano, there's little interference from pentatonic or 5th scales, Standard/non-standars tuning, etc. In fact, he won't even have to worry about staying in tune on a piano.. Unless your piano sucks... in which case he will.
Ok. There's my two cents.
yeah....i play guitar, and it would be pretty damn hard if you were 4, plus people with small hands have a lot harder of a time, but guitar is an awesome instrument, i taught myself everything i know, and if you get him one around age 7 or 8 he might be better off then.
keyboards
both my kids play bought one a clarinet one a flute
one is now field commander for marching band.she can play anything now
has keyboard but barely can do that.
it would give ya kid the raw basic music background
would be able to play blindfolded by time a teen and understand music composition as if its natural,(wont understand why nobody else cant do it)
at about 8 yrs old put a giutar in thier hands and let em go........
the music will flow soon after
that is if they like it,
may i suggest you expose them to some proper tunes
wont name songs ,thats your job to choose education ya know
peace
ps
buying instruments for kids is a crap shoot,
one quit and now is a cheerleader($800 flute sits in her room rarely touched now)
You might be right but i got a keyboard when i was a kid and the keys lit up for each song.Ithink there was 100 full songs on there and i learned them all by myself in about a year i could play all of them without the lights.Man i wish i kept up with that and maybe had lessons.Quote:

With lessons and what he can do at home i think it will be much easier for him to start off.He can have a guitar once he gets the hang of the keyboard and can play a bit.
