What GanjaKing said. I transplanted a couple plants last night using this method and the plants were out of their old pot and into the new one in a matter of seconds. This is the only method I've used to transplant and my plants never stress after transplant - they just grow bigger faster.

Seriously though, I actually let my plants get overly DRY before transplanting.
I think your medium has a bit to do with it too. You will figure it out for yourself once you get to the point where you are dealing with nearly-potbound plants.
I do find that letting the plant I'm transplanting dry out helps immensely in getting it to come out of the pot in one chunk. The soil shrinks up and binds together much better. Plus the roots help hold it together.
I haven't encountered a problem yet that couldn't be fixed with lube and a smack.

oo yea i couldnt turn a 3 gallon pot upsidedown and smack it out soo i just put my fingers in the soil around where i thought the roots ended and dug in and pulled the plant up but now the 1 i didnt even transplant is turnin a bit yellow on the round first set of leaves...is it normal..???

oh, you transplanted out of a 3 gal pot? Yes, that would be a bit difficult. I usually do 3 transplants in a grow. Seedlings I start in 6 pack flower pots (which I'm planning on changing because its really hard to do one at a time and not mess up the other seedlings) I put those into 1 quart pots, and from there I go up to my 3 gallon pots which I use until the end of the grow. For me, this works excellent and I haven't had any issues with it.
