i would not dry hit a bong ouch! that basen at the bottom of the bong you put water in ther not a lot just enough to go past the down stem

if you want a nice expensive bong, get a roor. they are the shit, although they don't color change. I'd recomend a glass one, they might break but they are soooo much sweeter than a plastic one.

glass bongs don't have carbs, the bowl, called a slide, sits in the downstem so you pull the slide up to clear the bong. plastic bongs usually have a carb you have to cover.

just made sure you don't fill it up with too much water (bong water is GROSS)

somethings to look for also
~an ice catcher, its a nub so you can put ice in the long part of the bong to cool the smoke, very smooth.

~some downstems have several holes in the water, this helps smooth it also by having more water contact with the smoke

~color changing

if you wanna spend the money you can get a percalator...it has 4-5 water chambers so the smoke gets filtered like a fine vodka but they are like 400bucks

Bongs are rated one of the worst when it comes to THC delivery, but you are able to get a bigger hit off of them, so it equals out, also the water filters out alot of the bad shit and keeps that from going in your lungs, ie. the tar and shit. The bong is fundimentally a bowl which its stem goes into a little bit of water, then when you suck on it, you get the famous bubbling sound from the smoke coming down the stem into the water, kind of like blowing in a straw, but in reverse... pretty simple idea once you understand it, one thing i like to do when i smoke out of a bong is to crush up some ice, and put that in with a little bit of water, it supercools the smoke, and gives you an even smoother hit
