In cold weather (well, not so cold considering I'm in Cali, but yeah), I've had smoke go up a bit, and then sort of just hover there for a while, and so a light fog/haze sort of appeared.

I have filled a glass full of smoke before you take a strawl and put a joint on the end and gently blow into the strawl so the smoke goes to the bottom of tyhe glass and when youget it about 1/2 up the glass you drink it its pretty crazy!!!
Unless barometric pressure is low (aka before rain, you can usually smell it when there's low pressure), smoke rises. Pretty much anything that goes out of your lungs will rise, since your throat/nose/lungs warm the smoke or vapor to body-ish temp, which is usually higher than the ambient temperature around you.
