you can never join any band in any genre of music and feel bad about it. Even if it isn't the type of music you like or listen to, you have nothing to lose. If you say "fuck you" you have already lost and you won't get that much better. Plus you never did mention what you play, but I gather its the bass?
Also, you still didn't answer what you hate about those bands you listed. I haven't heard of any of them personally, and I listen to a lot of music. I am interested to see exactly what it is about these types of bands that you don't like specifically. Also, the first rule in joining a band is that if you take that person's spot and aren't trying to learn set material or songs then you automatically add your own personal flavor and thus become 1/3 or 1/4 or 1/5 or whatever portion of the band that you have joined.
As a drummer I know I have significant pull as far as sound goes depending on how I want the song to sound or feel. All band members involved have a huge pull in the art of making music but you first have to realize your place and your ambitions.
when youre in a band alot of cool oppertunities start do come your way, including poonanny
You should join simply for experience, and to try out different styles, so it can influence your style in the long run. As a musician, you shouldn't limit yourself to a certain genre or style, or say I don't listen to this music, therefore I won't play it. If there is a time you don't like what you are doing as a musician, you can always quit. However the experience you'll acquire is valuable to your growth as a musician. Playing in a basement vs playing in public are 2 different animals.
My brother whos a drummer played in 3 bands, and their styles were totally different, one was a latin rock band, the other was an indie/shoegaze band, and the 3rd band he's in now, I can't describe the style, it's pretty unique, like rock/goa. Crazy shit. He isn't truly a fan of those styles, but my brother is able to jam with anyone, with any style.
The best bands won't limit themselves to a certain way of playing, and won't limit themselves to what kind of music they listen to. Just keep that in mind as you play with this band.
if you dont like the music, you might not play as well as you can.
i wonder how good they are...what do they use as influences or spinoffs of...progressions of?
Their influences are like, Job for a Cowboy, Through the Eyes of the Dead, SeeYouNextTuesday, Whitechapel, Knights of the Abyss, etc. etc. I don't like the fact that all it is is people trying to sound like pigs squealing, and 2stepping, and hardcore dancing. I likes LOTS of music. Black/Death/Thrash metal, ska, reggae, jam bands, punk, some rap, etc. etc. My play style is already diverse and good.
So what type of music influenced you to look outside of the box and find your own style?
Black metal, death metal, ska, and improv mainly.
JUst join dude. Get some experience. Have some fun.
