Hey Mand. You might want to look in to a small, wall mounted propane heater with a built in thermostat. I use one for the coldframe I keep my bonsai's in over the winter. I normally keep it around 35 degrees farenheit to keep the trees dormant, but not freezing, and it can get that area (7x7x12 ft) up to 60 or 70 on the coldest winter days if I need it to. It has a 10,000 btu output and will keep your room at pretty much any temp you want. It's safe for indoor use (as in, no CO problems) and a 20 or 30lb tank would probably last you a long time. It's made by a company called Procomm and I got it at a local shop called Northern Tool and Equipment. You can check out their website for info and see if there's a local dist in your area or a UK equivalent. Will also keep your lovely tush nice and toasty when you're out there doing your chores. And it only cost about $139.00, plus the cost of the tank which was about another $45 for the 30lb. The only downside I can think of is that it might actually raise the humidity in there since water vapor is a byproduct of using propane. Good in my case since we normally have very dry winters here.

Mand,
Do you change the distance of the light fixture when you change from MH to HPS?
I don't use MH anymore, but when I switch from flourescent tubes to HPS I start at about 18 inches with a fan. After about a week I will lower to about 12 to 14 inches.
I do this only because of the different light spectrum between the two. Trying to keep the stress to a minimum.
Sunny in the 60s here. Think I'll go out and enjoy the day.

Hello PP :) Well they did the same thing last time and the general concensus on here was "overwatering" and I had to agree with that because of the bad dampness and the fact that I quite likely had overwatered.
However this time PP, I can honestly say that isn't the problem, the room is dry and I have been carefull with the watering ;)
Hello Buk :) These aren't the "Widows" love, there for the next grow, should be about mid April when I start them.
These are a mix of sensi skunk#1 and sensi skunk, I haven't a clue which is which though because they got all mixed up :o
The last crop ? .......... it's pretty good, quite potent, I would say better than the one before but not the best I've ever grown, that place belongs to a single Afghani plant I grew a few years ago, an absolutely lovely plant and the bud was very very potent :)
Ah, at least you called me a "grow mum" and not a "grow granny" ;)
Tell you what Buk, there is nothing in this world to make you feel older than when you start being called "granny":o
Hello Bonsaiguy :) I used to use a little parafin (kerosine I think you may call it ) heater, but one time I ran out of parafin and finished the grow without any heat. Well I thought if I've done it once then I can do it again and save some money, so I did and I have.
However I really should look into providing a heat source.
I'm affraid our winters are very changable here they can go from being dry and mild one day to rain, frost, ice, snow, sunny, in absolutely any combonation the next day, you really don't know what it is going to do next love.
Hello Da1KrayzieThug :) You know my kids find it so funny when I tell them that there are a couple of young men wanting me to adopt them.
To them I'm just someone who "naggs" to much, they can't believe I was ever young and that some of the things I used to get up to would kinda put them in the shade a bit.
As for you taking over the growing ................... Oh with pleasure love, I'll just put my feet up and gladly leave it up to you :)
Hello HappySmoke :) I'm affraid the light stays where it is, I only move it when the plants start getting too close to it.
However that's how it is with my growing, it's very "rough and ready" also very basic and I don't have any real technical side to it:o
I honestly only know the basics, I once bought a tiny little book (about 50 pages long) called "Grow marujana in cool climates" and that really did become my grow bible ............... it's ever so basic ;)
Hmmmm "sunny and in the 60s", are you trying to make me envious ;) .................. I am, it's really totally freezing here today.
Well I have the house to myself for the next few days (one of my lads is staying at his girlfiends and the other is working away for a while).
It's lovely and quite here :), so I have rolled up three joints (two left now) , I'm going to break the seal on a fresh bottle of vodka and curl up on the sofa in a little while because one of my favourite films is on the telly at midnight "Theatre of Blood" with one of my all time favourite actors in it "Vincent Price" :). ........................... Hmmm it really doesn't get much better than this :)
Oh the plants :o , well there ok-ish, still kinda droopy ;)
Thankyou guys ......................... love mand xxx:)

Hello :) Just a quick update ................ the growth is going slowly due to the cold, if this cold spell continues I'm going to have to see about some heating.
The droopiness is still there, I suspect I won't get rid of it. However I have spotted the first boy, I will give it a day or so just to make sure ;)
As I said there's not much happening but I'll just add a couple of pics:)

Looking great Mand :)
Poor boy.... he's gonna get it.
Again, I find my self super impressed by your super simple, yet super effective growing system. Aha! But you're getting a heater... next up, you'll be getting some CO2 generators... before you know it, you'll have 4 vertical cool tubes running in your room!
Ok, enough ramblings, just kidding,
Best Mand,

Just a little journal............
Hello Turtle :) I only said I might get one ;)
To be honest love, I really ought too, it's very cold out and when the light is off at night it must be quite chilly in there:o
Oh, and yes I'm itching to get the boys out of there, it's such a shame though as the boys always seem to be the biggest and most healthy of the plants:(
Hello Scobbie :) I'm wrapped up love that's for sure ;) , but it really does seem very cold I just can't warm up even in the house :o
Oh yes were they feed him his poodles in a pie :), I also like the bit when him out of Dads Army (captain Mannering) gets his head cut off whilst he's asleep................:)
I really like anything that has a dark humor about it :o
Thanks guys .......................love mand xxx:)

Mand your grow is looking great, dont worry about the droopy tips, how i figure it, as long as the smaller leaves arent droopy then you have nothing to worry about. The shade leaves fall of anyways right?
Is there a way to change your thread title? Ive always wondered..

Just a little journal............
I think she mentiond earlier on, that she only dries them.. lol..
She won't go "Hollywood" by curing them..! lol
Or, am I wrong mand?:)
-
Just a little journal............
Hello Buk, SittinStoney, PP :)
The drying is just hanging them up in a dark, dry and ventilated place.
The buds are hung in a wooden shed during summer and they dry in about a week or so, but this time of year it's not too good in there so I dry them in the "pantry". I have an oldish house that still has a pantry and it's a pretty good place to dry them;)
Hmmmmm curing :o ............ well I just tend to put them in a draw in open paper bags for a week or two and that's it. To be honest I never really did understand "curing", and yes the buds my be a little harsh smoke compared to some I have smoked but it never really bothers me.
Anyway after a week or two I just put them into storage jars, tins, tubs, anything I have lying around. I was thinking of freezing some but to be honest I went off that idea;)
As for the resinous leaves and small buds, I put them in a shoe box, chop them up quite finely and force dry them for a few days on top of the ballast thingy. It drys them out easliy but that ends up quite a harsh smoke, but like I said it doesn't really bother me I'm used to it.
I'll just put a pic of drying buds from a couple of grows back ;)
Oh SittinStoney:) , I'm sure they will be ok with the leaves, they are still growing decent looking new growth, albeit slowly because of the tempreture :o

Hello Mand your doing a damn good job what # grow is this for you? you just keep it coming, you make it look so simple. keep up the log so we can see how it's done.
-
Just a little journal............
Hello Mobay :) It is simple love ;) .................. well as long has everything goes straight forward, it's when the problems start that's when I get stumped :o
Talking of which, the droop is still there, looks worse today but I am just going to finish this grow off, I maybe might even put the MH back in there and see if that improves matters ;)
However I am going to get a new HPS bulb for the next grow, just incase that is the cause.
How many grows ? ...................... Well I started growing indoors at the end of 98 and I average 2-3 grows a year, I'm not sure exactely maybe 18 - 20
It's a constant thing with me Mobay, I always seem to have a grow going on.
I don't smoke everyday, maybe 2 or 3 times a week but when I do smoke I smoke prehaps more than I should so I do get through it :o
Oh I'll just add two pics the first is the first boy, and the second is "little runty" ............... I feel sure she is a girl ;)

Hello BkSkillz :) , Hello Scobbie :) , Thankyou very much guys;) .......... However I have the feeling that this grow is prehaps going to be even more of a dissapointment than the last one :o
Once again I have swopped the HPS for the MH in an attempt to try and bring some "life" back into the plants, they are just looking far too "limp".
One thing for sure (even though I am still not convinced it is the problem) I will definetely buy a new HPS bulb before starting the "Widows";)
Once again Thankyou for the nice words, they have cheered up quite a dull day for me :)
Hello Bill :) Oh dear Bill I have just looked back and found that I didn't reply to you're last post, I'm really sorry about that love. I do like to reply to people who have taken the trouble and effort to post, I really have no idea how I missed it ............................. Sorry :o
Anyway Bill, I'm glad to hear you are well and I hope that you are settling in to you're new home :) . I just hope that the suspension of you're growing is just a temporary situation ;)
I have to say Bill I just noticed how many veiws there are on this thread, to tell you the truth love I find it quite "scary" :o . I wouldn't mind if I was producing some really great grow with "humungus" harvests, but I'm affraid it just doesn't seem to be happening :o.
It's very nice to hear from you Bill ..................... oh by the way, if you have that motorbike on the road ................. be carefull ;) :)

Just a little journal............
Hey mand,
I really like how you seem to come through with reply's for everyone. I think thats one of the things that make your threads really enjoyable. Anyways, i had 2 questions. First of all, is ventillation really needed? ive got a nice, dark dry room with an oscillating fan (not good with spelling when im high) that hits the wall and is not directly on the buds. But it has no venting. Do you think this will be a problem? Also, i have a few different HPS bulbs that all seem to be working fine when i put them in. Do you think although they are the same bulbs and they look as though they are working fine, this could be a reason i have droopy leaf tips? Ide like to see if a new bulb makes a difference.
Thanks for your time

Just a little journal............
Hello Latewood :) I was thinking just yesterday about how many of the regular people on here have left since I joined :(
So it really is really lovely to hear from you, Thanks for dropping by love :)
Hello Buk :) , Oh they are tough little "buggers" ;) , but you know what I have noticed, they seem to thrive on neglect.
I always compare them to a car I once owned, I used to have it serviced regularly, all the maintinance was kept up to date, I was always spending money on it, also I was always cleaning it ..................... and yet the dam thing was always breaking down on me :(
However the little old jeep I have now has never been serviced, it never recieve's any maintinace, as for cleaning it might have a bit of soapy water thrown over it once every "blue moon" and yet it just keeps going, never let me down yet ;)
Kinda makes you wonder is the "neglect" policy and just leaving them to their own thing the better way with plants as well ;) :)
Hello SittinStoney :) I'm sure ventilation is important as it is recreating outside conditions for the plants. However the only ventilation mine get are when I open the door for them in Summer :o
I reckon if you can provide them with some ventilation then that is great but if you can't then just carrying on growing, although watchout for the humidity levels in the Summer months ;)
Oh dear the HPS bulbs, well I put mine in when switching to 12/12 and it appears to be working fine, but instant droop started. So Friday night I put the MH back in and after being under it for yesterday (Saturday) they have picked up no end.
I think it means that even though the bulb is not very old and it seems to be working fine, "it's had it's day" and I really have to get a new one, but I'm affraid they are just going to have to flower under the MH till I can afford
one :o
I'll just add a few pics from this morning showing the difference after a day under the MH ;)
Thanks guys ........................ love mand xxx:)

Just a little journal............
Haha, No i think you misunderstood. My grow room has GREAT venting, its the room that i dry them in that has no venting. I was wondering if that would make a difference on how they dry.
Thanks for your quick reply though,
-SS

Just a little journal............
Hello SittinStoney :) yes, I totally got the "wrong end of the stick" there :o
A nice dry dark room is fine, ventilation is good but they will still dry without it. Although without ventilation always be vigilant for "budrot", but from what you are describing, you shouldn't have any real worries about that ;)
In summer I dry in a wooden shed in the garden, it's dry, dark and well ventilated, the buds dry quite quickly in there. In the winter I dry them in the pantry (it's an old house), it's dark and dry but cool with no ventilation. They dry fine but it takes several weeks .

Just a little journal............
Hello Marc :) I'm affraid it's basking on the beach that has helped make buying a new bulb at this present time even more difficult ;)
For the next couple of months love I'm up to the neck in bills, I have the last instalment on the council tax, the water rates, the telly licence, the car breakdown/recovery renewal, the phone bill, electric and gas bill.......... just to name a few, it's the UK love prehaps one of the most highest cost of living countries in the world :(
I will however make sure that I have a nice brand new HPS blb for the next grow;)
Good to hear from you Marc, I hope you are well :)
Hello Scobbie :) Buxton it's a fair way off, but I have been there a few times when going into the Peak District.
Ok Scobbie, when you get to Castle Donnington Sunday market, there is only one entrance. As soon as you go through the entrance turn to you're left and just follow that row of stalls, at the first corner there is usually a butchers lorry on one side and a stall selling handbags and things on the other, keep going about 30 - 40 yards and on the left hand side is the stall you want. It's just a small stall but you can't miss it, it has Jamaican flags and Bob Marley type stuff hanging up, also there are usually lots of young lads wearing baseball caps looking at the seeds they can't affrord;)
The stall is run by a husband and wife couple, they are really friendly people, although he does seem somewhat "spaced out" most of the time :stoned:
They are always there unless the weather is really bad, also there are usually a couple of other stalls around the market that sell seeds.
A little grow update :) ................... the plants are looking much better under the MH, I am hoping to get a new HPS as soon has I can but if I have to finish this grow under the MH I'm not too worried as the bud reduction is something like about 10%, that's not too bad, I can live with that;)
I'll just add some pics so you can see the improvment ..............
love mand xxx:)

Hello Mand,
Yes, I can see the difference between the MH and HPS bulb that you've been talking about. They do look perkier.
Hope your still able to get a good crop out of it.

Just a little journal............
Hello HS:) Well we shall just have too see what happens ;) . Today my youngest bought me a brand spanking new HPS bulb, mind you it won't be for free I'm sure there is some reason for it, I don't know what yet but I have the feeling I'll find out soon ;)
Anyway once the light went out tonight I replaced th MH with the new HPS, so I'm intrested to see what's going too happen:o
Hello PP :) another adoption  .................. Honestly love I may smoke weed and prehaps like the occasional little drink but if you asked my kids they would say I'm just like everyone else's Mum, aways nagging them and getting on to them.
I do it because I think I know what's best for them and because I worry and care about them but I'm affraid they don't see it that way ;)
Hello Scobbie :) ............... whilst you're there if you fancy a bite to eat ignore all the regular hot dog and burger stalls. At the opposite end of the market, there is a stall that does chicken wraps, but they also do a very nice Bombay potato wrap. It comes in a chapati wrap type thing and it's best had with a litte salad and a medium sauce (the red sauce), they cost £3 each but they really are quite nice :)

"I do it because I think I know what's best for them and because I worry and care about them but I'm affraid they don't see it that way"
I always look back to when I was that age and remember (or try to as it's been decades) how I felt about my parents telling me what I should do. Then I back off my daughter as I know it does no good. They know all...or so they think...and so did we. Proverbial thought for the day. :D
Glad you got a new hps Mand. Be interesting to see what their reaction is to it.

Hello :) Oh dear this growing lark is being kinda testing I'm affraid :o
By the way StickyFinger :) You read the whole thread ............ it does go on a bit doesn't it :o
Hmmm shopping for a ring, well love if you wish to send me a nice diamond one for valentines day it would be gratefully recieved :)
However the plain gold banded type of ring does have a certain effect on me .................. a wedding ring to me has an effect similar that a crucifix has on Dracula ;)
Lovely plant pics by the way Sticky, very nice :)
Buk :) ................... yes I have a telly but I never watch the channels, I only ever use it to watch DVDs on.
I find that the programmes are ethier talentless so called "celebrities" or things such as the news which is just full of wars, murders, disasters, fatal accidents or countries trying to find new and more efficent ways of killing people ............................. very depressing stuff, I do try to avoid.
Yes Buk I know you're near ready for harvest and you have done a super nice job of it as well . As for help of anyone, I feel certain that you would have grown just as well without anyones help at all, you have the entuhsiaism for it, and that's what counts .................... by the way love are you ready for the next grow ;)
Hello dialtone :) I like that bud pic, what fabulous colour those leaves are, I really have never seen any like that before.
Can I ask what they are ? :)
Hello Scobbie :) well send my love to the "missus" love............ you're a real "mate" Scobbie and I really appreciate that :)
Ah Marc :) ............................ hmmmm you have asked the question that is slowly driving me "round the bend".
Their reaction love was what I truely expected ................. they drooped as fast as could be :(
I always had the feeling that it wasn't the HPS bulb being faulty, you see when they are faulty the plants very quickly go yellow then brown and die.
However I had to try a new bulb just to be certain.
I have a theory Marc ;) ................. it's quite a "far fetched" one but it is the only thing it can be.
In the past I have always induced flowering after about ten weeks of vegitive growth and the plants have relished in the light from the HPS.
The last grow I induced at 7 weeks and they drooped, this grow it was about 5 weeks and they have drooped.
I know it sounds daft but I rekcon they are simply just not ready for flowering, so I have tonight put the MH bulb back in and I am going to continue to flower them under that for the next 2 - 3 weeks and then I will try the HPS again.
Maybe they just need some blue light untill they mature a little while longer ................... I told you it was a "far fetched" theory Marc but I know there is nothing else it can be :o
I'm going on the Sherlock Homes kinda thinking here ...................." when you elimminate all the possible causes and are left with an improbable cause, no matter how " soft than arsehole" it is, then that's the one" .......... or something like that anyway love ;)
Thankyou guys .............................. love mand xxx:)
Oh I can't post any pics of them, my camera has gone "walkabout" again :o
