		Shov Winter 2013-2014 Sativa Grow
I've been gathering the stuff to start a new indoor grow. It's going to be all sativa and either MR. Nice Seeds or my hybrid from Mr. Nice Seeds. I have my Z11 x Neville's Haze, Super Silver Haze and Mango Haze. The Z-11 is a hybrid I've worked from bubblegum and afghani strains. I plan on a very short veg for these, maybe two weeks to get to good form and then right to 12/12.

I will again be growing in organic soil with organic nutrients.
The basic recipe is approximately 40% composted used soil, 40% sphagnum peat moss and 15% additional perlite. The additional 5% is base nutrients and amendments including Espoma Plant-Tone (5-3-3), Maxicrop soluble seaweed powder (1-0-4), Excelerite 'remineralizer and micro-organism multiplier' (0-0-1.16), Plant Success mycorrhizae.
The plants will be started in RED SOLO party cups and transplanted into 3 gallon and 5 gallon grow bags.
There are six Z11 x NH seedlings just started. This morning I took the MH and SSH seeds (8 each) and planted each in party cups. I prepared 16 cups, all 16 beans sprouted since putting them in damp paper towel on Monday night.

The pots are under a (4) lamp T5HO54 Grow spectrum lamps for now. The room temperature is 75ºF.

Organic's the only way man! My taste buds tell me this makes sweeter smoke. I can taste chems no matter how much you flush. I'm interested in hearing more about your lights. I haven't changed anything in maybe 30 yrs. NL, kush, skunk & big bud. My lights, hps with fluorescent side light, adding led's to that mix. My soil, composted leaf mold (sterilized @ 180º to kill soil borne pathogens), spaghnum, perlite, pinch bone meal, blood meal, green sand, & a couple healthy hand fulls earth worm castings. Use fish emulsion & Bills Perfect Fertilizer, bloom formula, foliar feed with same. Soil mix is rich (but non burning), so I don't feed constantly. My grow (flowers & veggies too) is phenomenal (BS in hort from the 70's). Having the hort degree makes me feel like I should have the good sense to modernize. I'm sticking to my soil blend & strains, but I'm thinking about upgrading my lights. How's the heat output of your lights compared to hps? Heats now my main concern since I have a smaller grow space than I'm used to. Everything's perfect, but I would like to get the same light output with less heat & therefore less need of cooling (keeping down the ole' electric bill). So what do you think?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~PEACE!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Wasn't trying to jack your thread, just trying to get your attention to ask you about your lights & get your opinion. So I started my own, camper closet grow. Since our techniques are close, I figured you advise on new light would better fit my style.~~~~~PEACE!~~~~~

I've got all the plants up and going. The T5 is now off for now and I'm running a 400 watt 10K MH with a large box fan for ventilation. Max temp at the plants is 75ºF. I felt I needed to HID to cover the space.
The first risers are now in bags. These are the (6) Z11 x Neville's Haze hybrids. I topped them at the third node and they are growing back.
 Attachment 295199

 In the cups I have (12) Mango Haze, (2) SSH and (6) Z-11 sativa x Neville's Haze.
 Attachment 295200

In the buckets I have a bunch of seeds sprouting, these are Z11 sat x NH. If I have any runts or ? these will be the second stringers.
 Attachment 295201

I have fourteen more 3 gallon bags of soil ready for transplants. I'll have to fill six more if I want to use all the plants now in cups. That will total 26 plants.

		Shov Winter 2013-2014 Sativa Grow
The grow area is anywhere from 2' x 4' to 5' x 5' and I use up to 1000+ watts. No feminized seed. I'm thinking if I finish with at least nine that's about right. Usually, I end up with more plants than I need rather than too few.

Tell me more about your 2X4' area. What wattage lights here & about your cooling. My camper grow closet is about 2 1/2'X8'. Since I'm using 4' fluorscents, using 1/2 to put my veg fish tank in. Can't throw a lot of wattage in there because I'm running extention cords. Had an electrical fire last fall during hurricane because of over loaded cords, made me paranoid. Fear of another fire is seriously limiting my possibilities, but I can visualize your space & dream untill my outdoor grow next year. (Sm perpetual harvests are better than nothing). BTW, Este still MIA....worried.~~~PEACE~~~

I use a utility room that is about 9' x 14'. In addition to the home water pump and furnace there is a work bench with task lighting and an exhaust fan. The grow area is surrounded with cardboard panels painted white for reflecive walls. They are hung from the 7' ceiling.

I hope the back surgery went well! I've been there and it's no fun. Best wishes to you and especially Mrs. Shovel.

Your new grow sounds really nice so far! I've just started mine too - have a Cannatonic, Chocolope, Tangerine Dream, and Blue Cheese (feminized). Trying to re-veg my Widow and Pineapple Express. Widow looks really sad. The new babies however look really good. :D

So sorry about Mrs Shovel. God I know back pain! Broke 3 ribs loose from my spine, resulting in quite a bit of nerve damage plus degenerative disk disease. I feel for her. Send her my best!
---- your grow room is 2' longer than my spare bedroom, which I plan to turn into a laundry room/ grow room in about three years from now. I'll probably keep the grow area sm since my outdoor is my main crop. Most likely a 250 watt hps on a 6' light track with fluorescent grow lights on the sides for flowering, 6-8 plants. But till then, its just my little camper closet grow! :) ~~~PEACE!~~~

Hey Shovel, how's the Mrs? Hope this surgery helps & the pain level isn't too high. When my ex had his spinal fusion, he said the pain was a lot less after the surgery. Don't forget to make her a cup of chamomile tea to go with her evening dose of pain meds. I love that stuff. It goes so well with a bowl before bed, no pain & a good night sleep. :)

I now have 24 plants in 3 gallon bags under a 400 watt MH and 216 watts of florescent. They are in different stages of seedling. Sunday the lighting will change to 400 watt HPS and the florescent will continue to burn veg spectrum lamps for now. I will start 12 hours lights on, 12 hours lights off. These strains can be very stretchy and flower for up to 14 weeks, some individuals can go even longer. I'll put up some crappy photos soon.

Pretty pretty babies. God, I think we even do the same plant lables! Cut up milk jugs & sharpie marker! Hey, re-use, re-cycle. Since your varieties will stretch a lot & will be in flower about 14 wks, how tall do you think they will be at finish? My attic & basement both had low ceilings (camper even lower), & that has always prevented me from having thoes tall slow flowering sativas indoors :(

		Shov Winter 2013-2014 Sativa Grow
I've been able to keep them around 3' even with a full 8 week veg. But these will not be topped (except the six already done). LST also works well to develop multiple colas and short stature. I've had a few very odd flower and plant formations growing these sativa dominant haze strains. They are very interesting to grow and the NH has my favorite flavor.

Yut, I do reuse my cut milk jug labels. I clean them off with alcohol. I also save/reuse the pieces of solid copper electrical wire I use to train the plants and hang things up.

That's amazingly compact for sativa dominates. I'm impressed! Very few people seem to know you can remove permant ink with alcohol. I learned that when I kept getting ink stains in the bottoms of my lab coat pockets! Seems we have more similarities that just growing techniques. When I painted my closet white the other day, I realized the wheel well raised the closet floor 1 1/2', so by the time I hang my lights, I'll only have 4' , maybe a little less for finished plant height. I hate to be so limited. Found 2 strains that are really compact, one of them are on sale, so guess I'll be going with the arora indica. I think it was like 10 seeds for $33. You know anything about this variety you can tell me?. Oh, since we're both into re-using, I found a nursery who sell used 1gal pots, .10 cents each. So I break out the bleach (ugh! Hate that smell) HOT water & a scrub brush. Cant beat that price! One year I had some landscape fabric left over, so I set up the sewing machine & made grow bags. Hey, what can I say, I'm a cheap date! LOL!!~~~PEACE!~~~

home-made grow bags are great. I have also used smart pots and reusable fiber shopping bags. I bought a bag of (25) 3 gallon grow bags so I decided to go with them this time as I'm cramming a lot of green into a minimum of space. Cost $.30 each.
I do not know that strain. It sounds like a Northern Lights type (Afghanica).
I have been buying my seeds from Mr. Nice Seed Auction. Some great deals. I bought the European Outdoor strain for 50E for a gram (50-60 seeds) the Mango Haze cost maybe 100E but I got 25 seeds in the pack (18 minimum usually). There are many strains that go much cheaper and they are mostly premier strains.
I grew out some sativas indoors 2010 and 2011 and the grow logs should be here on cannabis.com.

I don't have think I've seen you mention if you use fem seeds or not. I'm trying to decide which way to go with that. If I like this new strain, would kinda like to keep the strain going, but since I'm not ordering many seeds, maybe I'd be better with all females. Whats the most potent strain you have going? I'm already thinking about next springs outdoor grow.~~~~PEACE!~~~~

		Great questions.

I buy regular seeds. But when the plants grow out one may have a couple of seeds from self pollination. These are feminized and I do save them if the weed is up to quality. If a plant hermies and puts out seed (or seeds other adjacent plants) I will not save those seeds. This grow is all regular seeds. The most potent strain is the Neville's Haze so certain phenos of the Z-11 x NH hybrids may be top shelf. The SSH and MH are also top shelf genetics. They are very similar as the mothers were sister plants when the breeders worked these strains. Selections were made to offer different tastes though the genetics appear the same for both Mango Haze and Super Silver Haze (NL5 x NH) x Skunk1 x NH). Same-o for my Z-11 x NH strains. Selection of a Z-11 indica dominant mother verses a rare sativa dominant mother with the same Neville's Haze father produced two different strains, though some phenos of each may be very close to the same thing.

These strains may not be the best for outdoors in my climate. The Neville's Haze is best in a tropical climate. The SSH and MH may be a little less demanding.

I'm zone 7, close to 6 on the USDA map. Do you know what zone you are. Back in the 70's, to bud some of the long flowering late mexican varieties (making sure they finished before the first hard killing frost), I used to run out every night around 5:30-6:pm & cover with a very dark green sheet of plastic untill after dark, beginning mid august. Total pain in the butt for a teenager. Couldnt leave the house till I took off the sheets. Killed my social life till the end of sept. but it worked. Now old age & arthritis won't let me sling sheets over those plants! Ha! Lot of work for stuff that wasn't even that good. Then I discovered skunk & never again planted seed that came out of a bag of brown crap! But my thought here is, there's a lot of good sativa strains out there that are late to finish. If you want the BIG outdoor plants, what's your technique? (Reading your threads & seeing your harvest dates, I figured you for around zone 5 or 6). ~~~~PEACE! ~~~~

What's the heights on these varietis so far? So what did you think about the aurora indicas genetics? Are you going to save some pollen from the silver haze?

I've grown out SSH a number of times and have f2 and multiple hybrids so no cross breeding of this now. I may have mentioned before but MH and SSH have the same genetics, they are cousins. The mothers were sisters. My favorite breeders are Neville Schoenmakers and Shantibaba from Mr Nice Seeds. And Mango Haze is Shanti's favorite strain. So far, NH is my favorite strain.
Aurora Indica is reported to be a very good strain. I do not run Gypsy Nirvana's gear.

 My indica dominant strains;
I've run Mazar-i-Sharif, it seems that it's supposed to be a sativa but the seeds I got produced a nice hashy indica. I like Bubblegum, a pretty indica dom IBL and have run it from bag seed and clones and got my own seed stock. The Bubblegum and Afghani bag seed created my Z-11 strains, If I remember correctly. Also I was gifted Afghani Dream x BOG Medley from a member here. I also have some Blueberry hybrids I developed from Dutch Passion Blueberry seed and crossed with Bubblegum. AK-47 seed I bought was also indica dominant and pretty good stock so I have some f2 and S1 seed stock from that. I was also gifted some other strains, Chem D x AK-47 is one I like.
